I heard it, I heard it, I heard it on the X

Wow! We’ve had one whale of a week this time out. The precursor of things to come started right off the bat, early Monday morning. I had stayed up late watching the storms which had some pretty nasty weather with it. We were awakened by the emergency sirens about 4 and popped on the tube to catch the news. Columbus was under a tornado warning, but we only had a watch with a thunderstorm warning, as it stayed north of us. We came out with only some branches down and a piece or two from the roof – along with about 2 feet of water now on top of the pool cover…I have GOT to get out there next week. Matt & I continued to learn about our new phones. I am really digging my new Droid X phone and from what I can tell, Matt really likes his Incredible. Now even Keith has a new Droid phone! I’ve finally figured out how to change the ringtone, take pictures & video and have gotten some really cool games. It actually does a decent job bringing up the blog page! This week was ISTEP testing for Abby, so Ann has blessed us with nice breakfasts each day, to help start her day off right. Bu felt like she did really well this week, which we hope is a good sign! I was saddened to hear that The Silver Fox – Duke Snyder – had passed away today. Speaking of health, Ann is getting around better these days, though she still has some days of intense foot pain as well as some nasty headaches recently. Matt seems to be completely healed from his shingles episode. Monday night, Abby had jazz class and later she and Luke stayed at Grandma’s house while Ann & I took Matt to his wrestling banquet. I was shocked that Matt actually ate BBQ pork sandwiches! Ann made her cheesy potatoes and by the time we got through the line, they were already gone. Matt did not letter this year, but ended with a .500 record, ending the season with 5 straight wins. He received a DVD of team highlights, but I am still waiting for the video of him in the one match I missed all week. He also received a nice booklet and certificate.

We have been working on Luke’s other front tooth, which has been loose for a month now. He has refused to let me pull it out more than a couple times. We’ve tried tweezers, a Kleenex and even a string to the doorknob trick – all to no avail. We’ve been prompting him to continually wiggle it as it is so loose that it hangs out and we’ve lovingly been referring to him as “Snaggletooth.” 😉 Finally, he got it knocked out while he was horseplaying with Abby on our bed and boy was he excited! Unfortunately, the tooth is coming in way back in his mouth and may need braces if it doesn’t correct itself. Luke had basketball practice at the YMCA. Abby & I went with him and we worked on her basketball skills. She’s getting better. I think with the right coaching, she could be really good. That night, #6 Purdue beat Illinois on senior night to finish 16-0 at home this year! It was the first time they accomplished it since my birth year! I hear Robbie Hummel is coming back for his 5th year senior status. There is major talk about Jajuan Johnson as the Big 10 MVP! Between him and E’twaun Moore, they have 4K points between the two of them, with Moore also being the all time leader for minutes and games played as a Boiler. American Idol kicked off their Top 24 with the competition lasting for three nights and cutting the field in half. James Durbin was my favorite as he rocked an old Priest number. Ann made popcorn, as has become our ritual on AI nights. Luke brought home some artwork and enjoyed celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. He brought home a cute Cat in the Hat “hat.” While watching the wedding videos brought back many memories. It also made me seek out one of my oldest and dearest friends, Mark Crum. I found him on Facebook and although he hasn’t responded to my friend request, I did find some great pictures of him and included a recent one here. Luke got his basketball pictures back and boy are they good! On Wednesday I went 0-2 in fixing computers as Maryann asked me to fix her Apple…of which I know absolutely nothing about. I struck out there and then came home to work on Ann’s new work computer and couldn’t get all her programs installed. So I gave up and watched the second night of American Idol and then fell asleep on the couch. Greensburg won their first game of the sectional over Madison. It rained on and off today as we saw March come in like a lion. I can’t wait till it goes out like a lamb. Luke had some interesting artwork he wanted me to post for Grandma & Grandpa – the first is a brain and the second one is Perry the Platypus – his favorite character on the Disney Channel.

Abby had another Spellbowl practice on Thursday afternoon. She was supposed to also go to her tap class but at the last minute called me at work and said she had a pair of basketball games. So I left work early and the kids & I headed over to the high school gym. Poor Ann was stuck at work until after 9 and got home very late that night. Abby had her final game(s) of the year, a doubleheader that saw her team play very well. It didn’t start off that way, however. She only had three players show up to play. They borrowed one gal from Emma’s team (the pink one) and they clicked. Abby played very well against Emma’s team first. She made her first basket of the year!! She went 1 for 5 from the floor, finally set a few really good screens but made one turnover on the offensive side, but it was her defensive that shone brightly. She had 8 rebounds, 2 steals and forced a turnover on the other side of the court. Her defense was tenacious as she hustled and shut out her opponent who didn’t even get a shot off the whole game. In the second game, she played against her twin friends, Bailey & Ashlyn. Again, the team played very well overall and Abby did well also. However, she was noticeably winded for most of the game. She went 0-1 in shooting, had 5 rebounds, a steal and forced a turnover in a very fast game. Again, she did quite well on defense as her opponent scored only one basket the whole game. Afterwards, we drove Bu’s friend Kenzie home – well sorta – we took her to the bowling alley to meet her mom….it rained all day and we were calling for widespread flooding. It also started getting much colder.

Friday saw more rain and a dip down in to the 30s (brrr). It was a long week and Friday was finally here. We had family night for the first time in a while. We started it off by going to Wings & Rings where first Abby and then Matt won the Countdown Trivia. At the booth where we sat, we also had an arcade computer game system that the kids enjoyed. It wouldn’t be a trip out to Wings & Rings without playing the crane game. Matt is usually good for at least one prize each time, but it was Bu who came away with the prize that night, as she pulled out a Tony Stewart Lucky Dog. We went home and played a game I hadn’t played since I was a small boy with my mother – Clue. The kids were a little antsy early on while trying to explain the rules but once started, they all did great. Ann ended up winning – just nosing out Matthew. Luke was a bit too cranky, so he was sent back to his room to watch the movie playing on the Disney Channel while we put on an oldie but a goodie – Commando (an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie) – streaming it over the Wii via Netflix. Only Bu & I made it through the whole movie. It isn’t the greatest, but you know what you’re gonna get with an Arnold movie, ya know what I mean? 😉

It rained again all day on Saturday, eventually turning over to a little bit of snow and was cold all day long. Lukey played in his final basketball game at the Y that afternoon. They played the Boilers, who are coached by one of Ann’s friends from school. His wife and Ann talked the whole time they were together. They do the same thing at baseball games as well. Their son, Seth, is one of Luke’s friends as well. The Wildcats looked great in their season finale. I really hope he can get Kevin as a coach again next year. It is funny that he has taken a team of 80% girls and has now beaten every team in the league with it! Luke went only 1 for 10 from the field, so he needs to work on his jump shot. He also had a turnover, but he also forced a turnover, had 2 steals, pulled down 9 rebounds, set some good screens (finally!) and really put down the clamps with his hustle defense. He sure looked like he was having a great time, as they all did…what a fun team to watch. Afterwards, we went upstairs for a small, informal ceremony where the coach handed out trophies. We were supposed to go sign the kids up for baseball and softball, but I forgot. We’ll have to make sure we get that done next weekend… Purdue got knocked off its high horse as the Iowa Hawkeyes beat them by a basket. It might be a good thing that Painter can use to help motivate them in the tourney and on in to the big dance. Lucas nearly knocked himself out that night after dinner. He and Matt were horsing around and he went to duck and turned at the same time. When he did, he caught the corner of the countertop right in the right eye socket. He has a bit of a black eye and a small mouse under it. He has complained on and off since then about his eye aching, so we’ll be keeping an eye on that next week… I finally got Ann’s computer all loaded up and ready for her to use at work. While doing that, I kept working on trying to figure out my new phone and drifting off on the couch (nothing like napping while it’s raining outside).

I was working on the blog until pretty late in the evening on Saturday night / early hours of Sunday morning and Ann was also having trouble sleeping when Matt got up and ran to the bathroom. At first we thought he was vomiting or maybe had diarrhea, but he was complaining that his belly suddenly began hurting so bad that it woke him up. He probably stayed in the bathroom for nearly an hour before coming out to the living room where the pain got worse and worse. Ann diagnosed him with an acute case of appendicitis. He went about two hours and the pain moved to his right side and that was it; Ann took him to the ER. They ran a few tests and admitted him for emergency surgery to remove his appendix! The pain was pretty bad at this point and they gave him some morphine that really did the job for him. He was a tough soldier and didn’t complain even once…even when the surgeon called him “thick.” He did stick out his tongue at him as the doc was a little rude, but it was 8 am on a Sunday by this time, so we forgave him. Ann convinced him to do the procedure via laparoscopy which should aid in his recovery time. He will be off a few days, so he’ll have extra time to study for his Algebra tests that he needs to take and pass ASAP. You could tell the doctor was perturbed with the anesthesiologist when he showed up late – there was indeed some tension in the air. Ann wasn’t so sure about the anesthesiologist either, as she had previous run-ins with him in the past; but he was good for Matt this day and there weren’t any issues. The procedure took longer than estimated, but he made it through with flying colors and recovered very quickly. After just a few hours, he was sitting up, walking and eating/drinking. He had to get a bunch of antibiotics in his system, so it took a little while longer (after dinner) to get him discharged. He finally got home just as Bu & the Dukester had gotten to bed. It was cute to watch them all hug on their big bubby. It’s funny how they fight so much but when it really counts, they always pull together. I’ve got a few pictures and Dee Dee took a few as well. I also have a couple of short videos, but I’ll share all of those with you next week. We finished up our weekly chores that we’d gotten such a late start to and fell in to bed. It’s been a whale of a week and I’m thankful it is finally over… We have four new videos to share this week:

I also have a couple of others to share as well…Jack Russell has been rumored to be in talks with Jimmy Page for a future project:

Next, let’s flip on the Waybac machine and start off in the early years for my Great Grandma & Grandpa Morgan in 1924 in what looks to be a picture taken on their farm; Great Grandma Morgan with possibly her mother (?) in 1946; then a great big picture of the Morgan’s and spouses, including Uncle Keith, Grandmaw & Grandpaw Brown, Great Grandma & Grandpa Morgan, Aunt Norma and very likely Uncle Ralph Spoor as well as some other Morgan relatives (Mom, care to take a stab at naming the rest of the family in this picture??); then another slide from Dean’s collection – this appears to be his back yard taken from his roof or possibly out a window on the 2nd story; and then a couple of yearbook pictures of Riley in my 5th grade year (I’m not actually in these pictures – I had Mr. Alban (who was a dick, in my opinion – but I’m sure I was equally a pain in the ass). Mr. Alban didn’t like me much, nor did his gay brother who taught across the hallway. I can remember more than one time him standing me in the corner and shaking me when I didn’t tell him exactly what he wanted to hear. Finally he did it in front of the principle, in the lunch room and I believe he took a leave of absence for the remainder of the year and then retired the following year. Come to think of it, I believe that happened to my 4th grade teacher in California as well… Anyhow, this is the class I entered in the middle of the spring semester, coming from California. I just barely missed the basketball season but joined the track team. I couldn’t believe how far behind Indiana was, academically…I was told to study for things I had already done months earlier. Naturally, I struggled as I felt I shouldn’t be expected to do the same material twice and this is where I got my only D. Oh man, I was in so much trouble… I would have Mr. Panos the following year. He was much cooler and was able to get through to me and helped me grow as a young man, helping to reinforce ideas my step father was trying to instill in me. I remember he was a great artist – a cartoonist, to be exact. His cartoons were a great vehicle to get across messages that I would’ve otherwise tuned out. I’m sure I still have some of his artwork in with my yearbooks, etc. I’ll have to dig out that box this summer when I clean out the garage!

In the middle years, we have a couple from the Bryan family Christmas at Mom & Dad’s dream house in Rossville – Vird, Belinda & a cute Deena Marie; and then the 3 siblings themselves; Rob with his girlfriend Amanda in approx. 1995; Nathan’s high school graduation party in Kokomo (I think June of ’97??); the Matt a month later for 4th of July festivities: getting a better view of the fireworks thanks to Uncle Chad; swinging with Grandma & Gigi; hanging with Chad & Dee’s dog on Grandma’s back porch; playing with his fire truck at the same place; hanging out with Grandpa Bryan on his cool tractor in Rossville; and Dad B at the Brown family Christmas at Brett & Tammie’s house with Leila.

Finally, the latter years: Abby’s 1st birthday party in 2000 with her cake, Ann w/ Mom & Dad B and Bu opening a present in the living room; then Grandma & Grandpa’s visit the next month: Mom w/ Bu and Dad w/ a tattooed Matt; Matt helping to cut firewood while camping with me in Bloomington; Matt w/ Ann at the fair in July of 2001; hanging out with Grandpa Bryan and Joe at the house on the hill in Rossville; several pictures of the Morgan family reunion at the little church, just outside of Lafayette: Aunt Norma, Uncle Ralph; cousin Cathy w/ her son Curtis; Karen, Bob & Brent; Norma & Ralph; and then a picture of me taken a picture of a Mom taking a picture of me at Abby’s 3rd birthday party in our kitchen; Sharon & Dan at Nathan’s wedding in September of ’02; and last but not least, Momma & her newborn baby snuggling in the family room in ‘03.

I forgot to mention last week….I LOVED THE WEDDING VIDEOS!!! They definitely brought back good memories and boy…were we younger or what??!! Thanks again Tom for the memories. The videos were great and the pics especially of Luke with the missing teeth!! Yikes…he looks like a jack o lantern now!! On the old family pic I recognize Aunt Norma and mom and dad, Uncle Keith, Grandpa and I wonder if that is Grandpa Morgan with his mom and dad in the picture. Also, I recognize Uncle Don and Aunt Louise (Aunt Louise was Grandpa Morgan’s sister) I believe in the other picture that is Grandma Morgan and her mom. May Karen or Brenda could shed some more light on this picture. I had forgotten about that one. Wow!! Good ones of the Morgan Reunion also. So good to see Aunt Norma and Uncle Ralph. Thanks again Tom and glad that Matt is on the road to recovery. Take care and we love you. Also good video of Alan. Talk with you this week sometimes. XXXOOO’s

  • (from email, an exchange between Mom & “Aunt” Brenda, regarding the old family picture above of the Morgan family)

    Brenda:
Yes!!! I was able to pull those pictures up. I called Karen and Kathy and we have decided that the women with Grandma Morgan is her mother, Grandma Leaf. The older man in the front is our Gr. Grandpa Morgan and Gr. Grandma Morgan is standing out in the front. That is probably Jimmy in front also. That is probably Don and Louise in the back. Karen thought maybe that was our dad behind your dad–just don’t know. I hope that was a help. I pray you get to feeling better soon!!! Love you—- P.S. That is such a great picture of you and Ron!!

    Mom:
Tom, Brenda wrote me this note regarding the old picture on your previous blog Waybac machine. She has trouble downloading the pictures and by the time she gets to the Waybac ones…her computer is causing her problems. I thought the boy in front was Uncle Keith but Brenda may be right and that is Uncle Don and Aunt Louise’s boy Jimmy. Aunt Louise was Grandpa Morgan’s youngest sister. They were with us whenever they could be for family gatherings.

    Then Mom again:
I think I have lost it. I forgot that there was a little boy in a hat covering his face and yes, I bet that is Jimmy. Uncle Keith is behind them. Got to get more rest huh????

    Tom:
Thanks Mom, I love you. This is one of the main reasons for having this project; so that names of our family aren’t lost to oblivion. Nice job ladies…

My mother has asked me if I can find neighbors we had in the early 1950s, and people on your blog have the same names as them. Are you related to Ralph and Norma Spoor, whose daughters were Karen and Brenda? They lived on South Drive in Anderson, Indiana. My last name was Wilkinson then.

  • Hi Teresa,
Yes indeed Norma was my grandmother’s sister on my mother’s side. Norma and Ralph have both passed away now but Karen, Brenda and Cathy (the youngest) are now all married and I believe all grandparents themselves! 🙂 If you would like, you can contact me off-line at scheu2112@yahoo.com and we can continue this conversation or I can put you in touch with them directly. Have a good day,
    – Tom
