And this High Heaven, My World’s Appended

Just when we think things are going to calm down, something always comes up. This week should’ve been a quite one, but as documented last week, Matt went to the hospital early on Sunday morning and a few hours later had an emergency appendectomy. He was released late Sunday night and has recuperated all week. He is doing much better now and has enjoyed having the week off. He received some very nice balloons that caught him totally off guard. Thanks to Keith, Rosie & Megan for the sweet surprise! 😛 We also received a cute picture of Megan dressed like Super Mario…not sure what that picture was all about, but she is so darn cute.

On Monday, Ann stayed with him and nursed him back to health. Later, she took Abby to jazz class before heading to the high school for the basketball board meeting. The bad thing was that she was the only one that showed up! But it wasn’t a total loss as she used her newly found free time to go shoe shopping. I stayed with Matthew on Tuesday. Matt’s wrestling coach (and future football coach) called the house to check on him, which I felt was a really classy thing to do. When Mom O brought home Lukey & Bu, they went out and enjoyed the nice reprieve from the recent cold, wet weather to ride the go kart and broke out their bikes for the first time this year! I stayed with Matt again on Wednesday. He was able to get up and down without much difficulty and was feeling really good. We worked on algebra for a few hours that day until he got it down pat. That evening, Abby attended spellbowl practice. It was a blah day that saw rain the entire day.

Ann stayed home with Matt on Thursday & Friday. Abby went to tap class where they only have three more practices until competition starts! Ann attended an after-prom committee meeting and it rained most of the day again…until it got colder and it began to snow. …I thought we were done with this shit! We were horrified at the scene we watched unfold on the news on Friday morning as the big earthquake in the Pacific Ocean caused a tsunami to rip in to Japan and headed towards the US, planning to hit Hawaii and the west coast of the mainland. With all of the major happenings around the globe over the past year or so, it seems like Armageddon is near – perhaps the Mayans were right about 2012??? Matt went to school for an hour or so, late in the day on Friday. He took a couple of his make-up algebra tests. He finally passed his chapter 7 test, but won’t know the outcome of the chapter 8 test until he returns to school. I just hope all the work pays off for him. That night, Ann went scrapbooking at Mrs. B’s and the kids played outside until it was dark. We had a pseudo Family Night without Mom by getting Pizza King pizza (with the cheese on top, of course!), played a couple of kiddy games (Guess Who) and a movie – well Matt & I got to watch it anyhow, it was a fun Jason movie – the 10th in the Friday the 13th series – called adeptly and simply Jason X. Purdue lost to Michigan St. in the Big 10 tourney. It was their second loss in a row going in to the Big Dance next week. They are definitely out of the #1 seed talk and may drop to a #3 seed. They got blown out by 20 points and I reiterated to Matt how hard it is to beat the same team three times in one season. Let’s hope Painter can get them motivated and make some kind of tourney run…man I wish Hummel was healthy! I received a bunch of new artwork from the kids this week and wanted to share a few with you here. I also came across something interesting on the web, while exploring this week: the Lafayette Police site has a Wall of Honor that featured Grandpaw Brown…kind of neat.

Saturday was absolutely gorgeous! It was by far the nicest day we’ve had of 2011. It was up in the 60’s but had a very strong breeze that still kept it on the cool side. As Mom & Gigi traveled east to visit Keith & Rosie in New York, Ann & Bu were charged with watching the dogs, so they’ve been back and forth a few times over the weekend. As the girls were busy with the pack of canines, Luke & I went to the armory and signed him up for baseball. I was surprised that Matthew decided to hang it up and will not be playing baseball this year for the first time since he was 2 – that’s 12 straight years of ball (since he was in diapers!!). 😉 He is talking about getting a job this summer, instead, to save up some money for when he gets his driver’s license. …Our baby is growing up…damn we’re old… Although that was a sad scenario, Abby went the other way and will play in two leagues this year – one slow pitch and one fast pitch. It will be a very busy spring and summer for us – but what else is new, right? We played outside all day. I finally siphoned the water off the pool cover (man, we lost a lot of water this winter). The kids played kickball, took the dogs for a couple walks, rode bikes, rode the go-kart, played baseball in the back yard and then I took Luke & Bu to the back lot and pitched to them for about an hour. Luke needs a new bat this year but is using Matthew’s from last year. It is a little too heavy for him, but he still whacked one to the street! Abby did OK with slow pitch but did really good with the fast pitches I threw her…so it could be a fun year for her! Afterwards, I took the kiddos to Dairy Point to celebrate a successful week for them – Matt passed his algebra test, Bu completed her ISTEP testing and Luke earned all green cards on his behavioral chart at school. We all fell asleep early that evening and lost an extra hour as we slept through the night when Daylight Savings Time “sprang ahead.” We performed our weekly chores around the house and stayed inside as it cooled down in to the 30’s on Sunday. It was a nice, quiet day that allowed us to kick back, play with some Legos, watch some tube and relax for once…ahh….

Here is a short video of a few things from this week, along with a few other miscellaneous videos from the net this week.

Next we head in to the Waybac feature. We start almost 100 years ago with one of my Grandpaw Brown as a 2 or 3 year old child in approximately 1925. We have a picture of him on an old bicycle with his Uncle Jimmy. I have no idea who Jimmy is…Mom, do you? Next we head to the 1950s for another slide from Dad O’s collection – this one seems to be taken from a cave; next we go to March of 1958 for another picture of Grandpaw Brown, this time lounging on the beach; then we move to the early 1970s for a rare picture of my Grandma Bryan – this one is for Vird’s wedding, I believe and has a nice one of Dad B with his momma; and then a couple crops of the newly wed couple on their honeymoon cruise in ’77; and although it was from ’89(I think?), it features some cute pictures from the ‘50s of Mom B – I see that one is posted by Grandpaw, but I wonder who submitted the other one?

Next, we head to the early 90s for a picture of Chris & Allie Biddinger in Westport; Uncle Dan & Katie at the Bryan Christmas at Vird’s in ’95-ish; then several of Matthew in the summer of ’97 – with me and his beloved mower at WTRE, waiting for the fair parade; at a Brown family reunion / fish fry at Marilou & Kenny’s house in September – swinging with Austin and then hanging out in the pole barn; Rob’s Three Springs picture; and then several from our trip to Rossville in September of ’98 – Matt helping Grandpa mow the yard; Fish fry the following year with Kenny & Dad with the grandkids; and Rob’s big return home, including one with Mom’s good friend Sue Yoakum, who passed away from complications from MS a couple years back.

Finally, we head south to Orlando for our trip to Disney World in ’99 with Ann pregnant – including our Breakfast with Pooh at the Wilderness Lodge; then Abby’s first birthday in 2000, at our home on Main St – where Bu really enjoyed her first cake!! And we wrap up at Abby’s fourth birthday party at our current home in September of 2003.

That does it for this week’s edition of the Scheu Family Blog. I’d like to thank you for taking time to keep up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu

Tom, where did you get that pic of Grandpa Brown? I never saw that son honest and who Uncle Jimmy is I don’t know. Maybe if I talk with Aunt Dorothy…she might know but other than her I wouldn’t know who else might know. I’m not sure if Daddy put that other picture in or Aunt Marilou. Who knows it’s been 20 plus yrs now!!! Hard to realize. That one of Susie is good too with Rob. I miss her so also. Boy, have we ever lost a few friends and family. Hard to realize and they are sooo badly missed. Life goes on but it sure was alot better when they were in it!! I LOVE YOU ALL WITH ALL MY HEART!! Take care and hopefully this week will be alot calmer for you all. XXXOOO’s

Also, thank you Tom for the wonderful spot on Dad on the Lafayette Police Dept. website. I’ll have to check that out sometime. I probably know a few of the good ones listed there from my past. They were a great bunch of guys and always treated me so well whenever I visited. They are truly a special bond of brothers. They will live with me always. I remember and love that pic of Matt with Pooh and the look on his face. Nice artwork too this week. Very nice!!! Again take care, my love…..
