I’d Like to be…Under the Sea

It was another fast week that saw Ann head to Florida and Bu start up her softball practices…and as always it was interesting with these kids. On Monday it rained all day. Bu had her final Spellbowl practice after school. Matt went to weightlifting / wrestling practice after school also. I worked late and Ann and the kids went shopping. Luke was very excited to get a new pair of kicks (that’s slang for shoes, Mom). He had to make sure he showed us how fast they made him – sprinting back and forth in the living room, the kitchen, the playroom and the main hallway. We finally had to make him stop but his devotion didn’t stop there as he slept in them all night as well. That night, I found some great pictures of my cousin Barney and his family as well as some cool pictures of my friend Mark Porter with Grace Potter after attending a recent show of hers (there is also a great video he shared of her below as well). Abby also shared a strip of pictures she and Megan took the last time they were together at a photo booth at the mall. Oh, and we also have pictures of last Sunday’s birthday party for Jamie…

On Tuesday evening, Abby had Spellbowl. This year it was held at South Decatur. Abby was the 1st alternate and did not get a chance to participate this year. She did, however, get to play Vanna White by keeping score. Likewise, Grace was an alternate for the 4th grade team and also kept score. Abby rode out with Deanna and Grace. Jamie caught up with us shortly after it started and Ann finally made her way to the event towards the end due to working late. The event was about 2 and ½ hours in length. Luke had to miss baseball practice because of it. Matt did make it to weightlifting / wrestling practice. Meema took Luke to the dentist (he needs to have two baby teeth pulled apparently). Luke told Gma that he had Matt’s old shoes and needed her to get him a new pair…that little turkey…but thankfully Mom O knew better. Both Abby & Grace’s teams took first place!! Good job, girls! Luke, ever the character, started talking to a man next to us and said, “I know you – you’re John.” When the guy asked who he was, Luke quipped, “Don’t you know me? I’m Jake!” 😉

On Wednesday, Ann headed down to Florida with gals from her office for their annual staff retreat at the Doc’s condo in Panama City Beach. Abby had her first softball practice. Her team is pretty darn good and her coach seems really good as well. He asked me to help facilitate the practice, which I was happy to oblige. That night, we went out to Hibbett Sports and picked up new bats for Bu & Luke as well as sliding gear for Abby. Luke got a VERY nice bat – nicer than any of the kids have ever had in the past, so we had to have a long, serious talk about bat care and sharing, etc. We rocked out to American Idol – especially with James rocking out with Zakk Wilde on a cover of Sammy Hagar’s “Heavy Metal!!” On Thursday, Abby had to miss her softball practice in order to attend her tap dance class. We picked her up a smidge early and ran Luke out to baseball practice. It was a gorgeous day and perfect for baseball. Matt again attended weightlifting / wrestling practice and is starting to show some bulk. He wants to get a dietary supplement to take before lifting to help build mass. We’ll have to run out GNC this weekend to see if we can find what he and his coach have been talking about…

On Friday, I played hooky from work and went with Luke and all the 1st graders down near Cincinnati to just across the river in Kentucky for a tour of the Newport Aquarium. It was really neat and Luke got to partner up with his good buddy, “Germy.” I chaperoned that small group and we had a blast. Highlights of the day, according to the Duke were petting the sharks, the “icky” crabs and jellies, the divers in the big shark tank and the jungle gym in the Bug Bog. Afterwards, I had my 6 month checkup where I had a mostly great visit. Doc wants me exercising more to bring down the triglycerides which are starting to creep up again. That evening, we had a modified version of family night without Ann as we went out to El Chile Poblano for margarita night, came home and played a 2 hour kickball marathon that Luke & I won after three extra innings and only a sliver of daylight left after a diving triple play that I made! We ended the evening with the new Harry Potter video that I believe only Abby actually watched! LOL

On Saturday it was so cold, damp and wet that we stayed inside the whole day. In fact we only opened the front door once – to pay the Pizza King delivery guy! There were high winds and rain all day long – yuck. Because of the nasty weather, we couldn’t get out to mow, so we flipped days and spent the day inside doing our normal weekly chores and just taking it easy. We had planned to get the kids over to the pitch, hit & run at the Y and head down to Thunder over Louisville (the opening of the Kentucky Derby, which features the nation’s largest fireworks display) – but it was simply too cold and wet to do either; so we hunkered down inside and did our best to keep warm as we watched several movies. On Sunday, Ann returned to us in one piece and promptly fell back in to her routine as she made popcorn and took a nap! I finally mowed at our house and at Mom’s. Although the mower and blower ran great, the weed eater gave me fits again this year. I’ll give JT one chance at fixing it and if not, I’m ditching it for a Husqvarna!! Luke went over to Alex’s house for the late afternoon and Abby and I played catch after an exciting NASCAR race at Talladega where Jeff *almost* one it, losing the lead in the last 500 feet of the race!

Next we move on to the video section. We have one new family video which is officially our 250th video uploaded to YouTube!

And finally, our favorite part of the weekly blog – the Waybac feature. Leading off, we have a few pictures from 1987 – including my high school graduation party in our garage in LaPorte in June, with pics of Grandpaw Brown, Aunt Norma, Aunt Dorothy, Aunt Lou, Mom & Dad Scheu, Katie & Sharon and then the Brown family reunion in September in Rossville with pics of Missy, Debbie, Homey, Brian, Grandmaw & Grandpaw Brown, Dad B, Mindy, and Aunts Marilou & Dorothy; and then Easter in 1997 with a young Matthew (the last time he was in a suit, I think!!), Grandma O and Gigi at their home in Ryle.

Here we have a bunch from 1999: first at the condo in Treasure Island during week 19 with Matt, Mom & Dad B and myself; September for Bu’s birth in Columbus with Mom & Dad B, Mom O, Matt, me and of course the guest of honor; early December for the Brown family Christmas at Mom & Dad B’s new home with Kenny & Marilou; and then a couple pictures of Mom & Bu’s first Christmas Eve.

We wrap up with Ann’s birthday party in January of 2000 at our first home in Greensburg with Matt & Ann; Matt’s third birthday party in March of the same year; and then Luke, Abby & Matt in 2006 – late on Christmas Eve and then early on Christmas Day.

Tommy, just noticed that I hadn’t left a comment yet. I loved the pics of Barney…he has really changed thru the years yet, he has remained the same in my mind. His family is very nice looking and it was wonderful to see June and John once again. That June has a smile that lights up a room!! Great pics of the kids too and loved the video. The waybac brought once again, so many memories. I especially loved the one of my two aunts (Marilou and Dorothy). I always loved that picture. I remember those Christmas’ and other occasions as if they were only yesterday (okay maybe about a year ago). Wow! that aquarium looks really neat too!! Great picture of you, Luke and his friend. I also loved the ones of Abby and her friend. I miss you all alot and love you with all my heart. Take care and have a great week!!! XXXOOO’s
