Everybody’s Greeeee-eeeeen…

What a cold, odd week it has been for us here at the Scheu abode. The kids had Monday off for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day but Ann & I had to work. The kids managed to not kill themselves that day. Thankfully, Matt had the day off from wrestling as well, giving his arm another full day to heal. Abby still had tap dancing that evening at Dixon. Afterwards, I met the girls at the Fieldhouse for Abby’s first basketball game. Considering they only had one practice prior to the game, it’s no wonder most of the girls looked lost and unseasoned and just so green. Abby had limited playing time, participating in roughly ½ the game. She went 0-2 from the field with 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 fouls. By the time we got done that evening, it was starting to cool off after a pretty nice day.

It rained all day on Tuesday, eventually dumping 2??? on us and bringing with it severe weather – including thunderstorms, high winds and tornado warnings. Abby’s basketball game for that night was cancelled, but she still had jazz dancing class. Matt saw the trainer before practice and he advised him that he could practice only if he was up to it. Matt decided he needed to sit out practice. The temps continued to drop as it became very blustery and wound up dropping below freezing over night. It was taco night at the house, much to everyone’s delight. It was very cold on Wednesday, never getting above 30 all day. Abby had academic team meet but didn’t even get to participate. Matt had his first wrestling practice and although his arm was sore that night, his knee hurt even worse! It was American Idol night, meaning popcorn for dinner!
Thursday was very cold. The roads were brined but we never did the snow storm they were expecting. Matt’s shoulder was better after practice. We had breakfast for dinner that evening… Bu spent the night with Megan on Friday night. Matt learned that he was seeded 4th for the 220 pound weight class in the conference tourney. Matt had a formal dance that evening at the high school. Initially, he wasn’t going but then out of the blue this afternoon, he asked a young lady and she accepted. So Ann went out and bought him new clothes immediately after work, since he had nothing to wear. However, by the time I got home that evening, she had backed out. Although he said it was no big deal, Ann & I know better. So we all got comfort food from our favorite carry-out place, Koch’s. After school, Abby went with Megan up to Indy to stay the night at her Mom’s house. She and Megan had a good time – eating brownies, wearing silly socks and getting in to the hot tub.

We were up early on Saturday to take Matt to the conference tournament at South Dearborn High School. However, overnight we had been the recipients of a large winter storm with freezing rain, sleet and ice. We had about a quarter inch of ice covering everything. We had to let the car warm up for about 45 minutes before it was safe to drive – and that was with some scraping. However, before we left; we received a message that it had been delayed 2 hours due to the conditions. So everyone went back to sleep. When I got them up again, we received another message that it had now been delayed back to noon. So, we relaxed for a few more hours and then drove out to the high school to meet up with all the kids. We no sooner pulled in than a group of kids came out of the Fieldhouse and said that we weren’t going. We confirmed with Coach Cochran that the sheriff’s department and the superintendent would not allow the busses out on the roads, therefore we weren’t going. Thankfully, we weren’t the only ones to pull out due to the road conditions and the entire tourney was suspended until further notice, so we didn’t miss anything. Ann wonders if they’ll try to re-schedule it for this week; I assume they may just cancel it for this year. We were all bummed so we went to Chili’s to celebrate Matt’s “undefeated??? day! LOL Abby spent the day and another night with Megan & Julie, up in Indy. They enjoyed the hot tub again and went out to eat at Kabuto, a Japanese restaurant where they prepare the food in front of you. Luke went to Alex’s house for the afternoon and we came home and enjoyed some quiet time. I coughed, sneezed and blew my nose all day. I hope I don’t share it with Matt, who has the Sectional tourney next Saturday. I went through two boxes of Kleenexes and went to bed early. It was cold again on Sunday as we did our weekly chores around the house. Not much of the ice has melted, but we are actually expecting another warm up this coming week, possibly pushing back in to the 50’s, so the crazy la Nina weather pattern continues for us. The boys enjoyed Championship Sunday as the NFL playoff games determined the Super Bowl participants, here in Indy in a couple weeks. They have already begun putting together all the festivities in downtown Indy. Ann & I are going to try and get the kids up there to experience the once-in-a-lifetime happenings in the Circle City…

Here are a bunch of videos from around the net, including one new family video that features only Abby’s first basketball game of the season.

Now let’s flip on the Waybac machine and start back in 1950 for a cute picture of Mom B at one year of age in Lafayette; Grandpaw Brown in a photo, circa 1950s; and a couple photos with several crops of Mom & Dad Scheu’s wedding in April of ’68.

Next up is my school picture when I was in Ms. Brickler’s class at Oakland Elementary in Lafayette in the fall of 1977; then we have a few pictures of the Morgan Family Christmas out at Aunt Norma & Uncle Ralph’s house with Aunt Brenda, Great Grandma Morgan, Aunt Karen, Mom & Grandmaw Brown in December of ’77; a great photo of my old school – the original Oakland Elementary school, built in the 1800s; what a cool old building. I have several great memories of that old building. This photo comes from a Facebook entry on Lafayette history. Next is a couple of great pictures of my cousins in 1977 – Trudy (I think this might be her senior picture) and the Paige’s – Wendy, age 8 ½ and Stephen, age 6 ½ – what a great photo of these two…

Well…looks like yes, Abby and her team do need some practices as they all looked a little scattered and unsure what they were doing out there. She will get better as she did last year and she will be hustling down the floor. Sorry about Matt’s meet but I am sure that it was for the best due to road conditions. I talked with Ann about the incident with Matt and the girl. She isn’t worth his time to do this kind of thing to him. He is a much better guy than she deserves and he will move on. Thanks for the old pics also and it seems to funny to see your dad and I and dad all so young and in the wedding pics…small world isn’t it? Loved the one of Brenda and Little Vicki also. We were soooo young….XXXOOO’s
