Got a Monkey on my Back…Gonna Change my Ways Tonight

It was a rough week for the Scheu family this week. Mom B was in the hospital but is home now, everyone in the house is on some sort of medicine for a sinus infection making it’s way through us, we lost a small member of our family and gas prices were through the roof (not as bad as last weekend in Lafayette, however, which we paid $4.11 to fill up the Pacifica!). The state started to come to grips with the reality of the tornados from last week and some of the horrific photos have begun to surface of the devastation…the little baby who had been sucked up in the tornado and thrown in a field 10 miles away died after the family had to pull the plug…just heartbreaking…and the Colts cleaned house this week…
Monday started off cold and it had snowed overnight and was snowed all morning, leaving behind about an inch and a half on the ground. We had to clear a path to the cars and scrape our windshields and push off all the snow from the vehicles. It warmed up nicely and melted every bit of the snow by afternoon. The Pacifica’s heater is on the fritz again. It didn’t work this morning but then it came back on. Didn’t we just pay for this to be fixed twice?? Abby had track and tap dance practice after school. Luke & Matt had elementary wrestling. I pulled off several great pictures from Haley & Ryan’s wedding from the internet. In fact there are several hundred up on a website from the photo booth’s vendor. You need a password. If you would like the website and password, please ask in the comments section along with an email address and I’ll hook you up.

Mom was supposed to have a biopsy performed today, but due to some miscommunication and some poor medicinal choices, it was decided it was in her best interest to wait until Friday. So, she was released from the hospital and Dad brought her home where she wanted to be. She stayed upbeat and positive. At this point, she wants to just get it over and get on with the rest of her life. Matt and Luke had a wrestling meet after school on Tuesday. This was the make up meet from last Friday when it was all about basketball. It was the Scheu Bowl as Luke’s orange team squared off against Matt’s blue team. Luke’s team ended up winning, but poor little Lukey lost again. He did great in the first period – in fact it looked like he pinned his opponent but as it was, he ended the 1st period up 6-0. But when the 2nd period started, his opponent got him reversed and then turned. And when he was on his back, he again decided to quit. Despite his coaches, brother, father, other coaches and teammates giving him advise / feedback – he didn’t want to listen, argued, gave excuses and denied that he quit – but he did quit and we were all a little disappointed. However, we understand it’s only his first year and he’s so young. He simply needs to work on what to do when he is on the bottom and how to get off his back…and he’ll be fine. In fact, we did work a little on it at home where he finally admitted that he had quit because he got scared. We talked about it and a little about how to get off his back. …and rumors abounded that the Colts were actually contemplating the big one – releasing the future Hall of Fame quarterback! Sandy’s little dog, Muffin, has been sick now for about two weeks. She was Mo & Poppy’s dog and is over 14 years old. She has been in and out of the vet’s office with seizures. It obviously stresses out Gigi and we all know that it won’t be long for her…

Wednesday was a lovely day but we did have wind advisories and it was indeed very blustery. The Colts did actually release Peyton Manning. He held a very classy press conference. It was a shitty day at work for me and it was a full moon, which was obvious by the way the staff and residents acted today. Abby had track that night and worked on long jump and high jump, along with hurtles. Ann had an after-prom meeting and the kids and I exercised when we got home. It felt good to get outside. I hope it stays warm so we can continue to get outside after work. We received a very cool mailing for Abby – an invitation to the Junior National Young Leaders Conference. It is a very cool opportunity for her, but I don’t know if the timing will be correct for her to attend this year. Still though; how cool is that??!! Way to go, Bu!!

Ann left for a two-day conference in Lexington, KY on Thursday morning. It stormed heavy all day and Ann felt like crap which is a dangerous combo for a three hour drive but thankfully she made it safely. Abby had track practice and Matt & Luke had wrestling again. It was American Idol night so Bu and I quickly did the dishes and she made popcorn for us all! Good job, Bu! You made your momma proud!! There was a little write up in the newspaper that night about the elementary wrestling program and featured both Matt and Luke in print and in picture.

Matt & Luke had another elementary wrestling meet at the junior high school on Friday evening. Luke actually had two matches. Today was his best effort to date. We were very proud of how hard he worked in both matches. He was outmatched in his first one and battled off his back the entire match it seemed. He eventually got caught and was pinned in the 2nd period – but not for a lack of trying. You could tell that his coach had worked with him in both Thursday night’s practice and before tonight’s meet. He only stopped momentarily to catch his breath but the referee called it a pin. He was upset but his brother, coaches and league organizer all talked with him and he came back with a vengeance. In his next match, he came right at the bigger boy (I think they’ve all been bigger than him this year!), threw an amazing side headlock from the standing position and put him on his back and pinned him in an outstanding 11 seconds!! Way to go, Dukester! He was so excited to have the monkey off his back. That ties Matt for the fastest pin of the year. Matt is really getting in to his coaching role and you can see it in the pictures / videos this week from the expressions to the patience and sheer joy in his face. I think he has found his calling… Afterwards we went to Pizza King for some pizza and beer. Their cold draft beer really hit the spot and the only thing that would’ve made it better would’ve been my lovely wife at my side, sharing it with me. The pizza was really good as well – with the cheese on top of course. But Ann had come home and gotten comfy, still feeling under the weather, and was already chilling on the couch. Hopefully she gets to feeling better soon – as do we all.

We got to sleep in on Saturday. Luke & I went and got the oil changed in the Pacifica and then hit the Corner Store as we have done the past year or so now. We got our breakfast sandwich and candy cigarettes. Since Luke did not give up, Ann promised to take him bowling so after morning naps we headed down the road to Parkside Lanes for a game of bowling. We had a lot of fun and Luke actually won! I eventually tied him with my final ball, but he was so excited! Ann went scrapbooking and I took the kids to Dairy Point for ice cream then came back and played catch in the front yard. It was good to get the baseball, softball and gloves out on such a pretty afternoon. Ann & I got Chinese takeout when she got home and the kids got Mickey D’s. It was a quiet night although the Colts released several other veterans from the team which will force them to have a completely different look next year. The big names that were released today included Joseph Addai, Dallas Clark, Gary Brackett, Melvin Bullitt, Curtis Painter and I have also heard they are shopping around Dwight Freeney…and I’ve heard that Reggie Wayne may be next! Sadly, the men’s Pirate basketball team lost in their first Regional game on Saturday afternoon, ending their miracle season with a 4 point loss – their first (and of course last) of the season. Congratulations to those boys – amazing what they accomplished with 2 sophomores and a freshman in the starting lineup.

Sadly, Muffin had more seizures last night and all morning. It was to the point where Sandy took her outside to play and for a ride in the car (her two favorite things to do) and finally had to take her to vet and have her put to sleep. Gigi couldn’t do it; but Mom, Dee and Jamie took care of it for her. I went over and consoled her until Ann could get there from the store. They planned to take her out to the Buchannan’s farm and bury her with the other animals in their little cemetery out there. It was a gorgeous day that went up to the 70s on our first day of Daylight Savings Time (yes, we had to “spring ahead” this morning). We did our weekly chores around the house and the kids played outside most of the day. We actually opened up the door in the playroom and used the screen door for the first time this year. The dogs played out back the whole day, it seemed. Abby’s computer died (hard drive crashed) and NASCAR was on the TV. We went to Matt’s wrestling sports banquet that evening. I will have pix and flix from that event next week…

Here are this week’s videos, including two new family ones from this week:

Next is our second installment of our new section entitled The Shit that Luke Says. This week we had two quotes nominated for the blog. The first one happened when Luke cut his finger on Thursday night and we were continuing to have issues with it bleeding the next night when Ann returned home. Luke told her he had cut his finger and she asked which one. His reply? “My flipping finger!” (Can you guess which one is your flipping finger?? 😉 The second one happened on the way to school on Friday morning. Luke and Abby were squabbling as they normally do at this time in the morning. Abby said something really immature and Luke quipped, “Well Abby, sometimes I’m the older ‘simbling’ (sic) and you’re the stupid 8 year old!” Have a favorite Luke-ism or remember something that has come out of this boy’s mouth? Please submit it one of two ways – either email it to me and I’ll feature it here or feel free to comment below.

And that leads us to everyone’s favorite section, so let’s “flip” on this week’s Waybac machine…we lead off with two old pictures from the 1950s – Grandpaw Brown (Robert Louis) in an undated photo with His Captain’s uniform, badge and hat on…and another undated colorized photo that I am going to guess is from the about 1955 or so with Uncle (Carroll) Keith Morgan. We also had two more photos at the Knights of Columbus in Lafayette to share from Mom & Dad Scheu’s wedding in April of ’68. Then there is a GREAT picture from Aunt Sharon & Dan’s wedding in December of 1972. I assume this was somewhere in Lafayette? What a great Bryan family picture of Vird, Grandma (Mary) Bryan, Sharon and Dad (Ron) B. We also have more wedding pix – this time Vird & Belinda’s wedding in August of 1977, out in California I believe – I especially like the one of the two brothers…

And we wrap up with several from our Christmas Eve party on Shortridge St in Lafayette in December of 1977, including photos of Grandmaw (Connie) Brown, me, Mom, Grandpaw Brown, and our neighbor Dave Linville (on the back, Mom wrote, “My ‘Little’ Boy, Dave). Also included are pictures of Mom with her cousins Brenda & Karen, her mom Connie and her mom’s mom – Margret (great grandma Morgan) at Christmastime in 1977; and then a few different ones taken during the winter of 1978 in February – our backyard along with our neighbor (Bev & Doc)’s backyard; Mom & I at Cub Scouts (she was a den mom and often held meetings in our basement) and our good friends Vicki & Gary Crum (Mom has noted on the back to notice the positioning of his “hand”). LOL…

Well that does it for this week’s edition of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu
