You’re a Bright Light Girl…in a Disbelieving World

It was a cold week that gave us more snow (less than an inch total, thankfully), lots of wind and lots of Abby activities. It was all about Bu this week – from volleyball games and practices to dance classes to volleyball games to Student Council meetings – it was all about the girl this week!
We had a wind advisory all day on Monday that kept it colder then it should’ve been. Ann & I left work early to get home, get drinks and snacks for the basketball team, pick up Luke from Memaw and head off to Sunman-Dearborn Middle School where the Pirate B teams squared off with the Trojans. They were much bigger, thicker and more aggressive. They had a couple good plays they executed well that burned us all night long. They also had a couple of players with skills. Bu controlled the tip at the start of the game, but that was about it for her in teh1st half. Abby apparently didn’t run a play correctly and didn’t box out on another play. Whatever the reason, she played sporadically and the team dug themselves in to a big hole with her on the bench. She played much more in the 2nd half and consequently the team pulled to within 4 points but couldn’t get any closer and lost by 6 in the end, 24-18. It was their first loss of the season. Abby went 0-1 from the field and 2 for 3 from the stripe for two points. She also had 1 rebound, 1 forced turnover, 3 blocked shots and 2 fouls.

Abby went in to school early on Tuesday for Student Council. That evening, Matt coached elementary wrestling at the junior high school. Ann started feeling sick at work and came home afterwards and went to bed while I picked up Luke and went to Abby’s basketball game at Waldron Middle School. It was an A vs. B team matchup as the Lady Pirate’s faced the Mohawks (this school is by best friend Paul’s arch rival from his playing days). Abby won the tip but the referees allowed the girls to line up on the wrong sides and we put it in the wrong basket as they went up top 2-0…it would be the only time during the game that they would have the lead. By the end of the 1st quarter, we led 20-2. At halftime, we were up 32-3 and by the time the game was wrapped up, the final score was 58-7!! Keep in mind that this was our B team facing their A team. Abby was 4-9 from the field for 8 points. She had 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 forced turnovers, 1 blocked shot and 2 fouls. Because Ann felt so lousy, I slept on the couch but neither one of us slept. Overnight, the poor thing was up and down, running to the bathroom.

Needless to say Ann did not go to work on Wednesday; she stayed home in bed and got some much-needed rest. I left work early and picked up Abby at school. We went up to Indy for a follow-up appointment with her spine doctor. The good news is that she hasn’t gotten any worse since last time and the great news is that he felt that she would be good for the rest of her life! :0) We celebrated by stopping at Baskin Robbins on our way home. We did not get back in time for her to go to basketball practice but came home and did her homework before going to jazz class with her buddy Bailey at the Dixon Studio. Meanwhile, Matt went with his friend Bryce out of town to the varsity basketball game.
Ann had a nasty headache and was dizzy on Valentine’s Day. She stayed home for the day and got some more rest. After work I picked her up, we grabbed Luke from Grandma & Gigi and we headed over to the Junior High for Bu’s basketball game against Shelbyville. The Lady Golden Bear Cubs were rough and tumble and there were many fouls (sounds familiar huh?). The Lady Pirates were up for the challenge and after a slow start, really turned it on and won easily 45-24. The Lady Pirates have now scored over 100 points in their last two games! Way to go, ladies!! Matt joined us after his elementary wrestling finished. There was an incident that night with a parent who is helping coach a team. Apparently he used some choice words in front of the kids and threatened one of the high school boys that is volunteering with Matt. Matt called the president of the league and filed a formal complaint. It is people like these that made us keep Matt out of this program and the youth football league. It is also why Luke will not be returning to this program and why Luke is just now getting involved in the youth football league. We’ll wait until junior high, thank you very much. Meanwhile, Abby was having the game of her life. She seems to be improving now with each outing. Offensively she won the tip and went 3-8 from the field and 2-4 from the line for 8 points with one turnover. She shined on defense with 17 rebounds, a steal, 4 forced turnovers, 7 blocked shots and 3 fouls. Way to go, Bu!

Ann returned to work on Friday – still not feeling like herself, but good enough for work. I stayed very late that evening to catch up on my paperwork that had been taking a backseat lately. I missed out on Koch’s for dinner but picked up Taco Bell for everyone for 4th meal. :0) Ann & tried to watch a couple movies that night, but I think I might have fallen asleep a few times I guess… We had lots of new pictures from Facebook, including Conner & Karsen; Nick & Emmett; Abby & her iPhone; Grace Potter & the Nocturnals; Aunt Sharon at work; Phyllis & Dick with Emma; me at work; and Matt driving the Crossfire downtown.

Finally the weekend came. Ann & I were couch potatoes on Saturday. Purdue got stomped by IU again in basketball. Luke went to Alex’s house for the day. Matt went to the wrestling state finals in Indy with his good buddy Joel for the day. And Abby went to the movies with her buddy Megan. It was actually peaceful around the house for once! NASCAR got underway with the Bud Shootout (or whatever they are calling it now). Even though there were fewer than 20 racers on the track, they couldn’t make it 15 laps without wrecking. The big one took out Gordon so after that I was only half interested. Harvick ended up winning and Danica would have the fastest car in practice. I, personally, am thrilled that the Daytona 500 is next week already! Unfortunately, we think Matt is coming down with the same illness that struck Ann, which will not bode well with his planned shoulder surgery this coming Tuesday so we started him on a Z-pack to hopefully expedite the healing process.
Abby had volleyball on Sunday morning at St Mary’s on her home court vs. the purple St Mary’s team, followed by a game vs. St. Peter’s. The girls looked great today!! Abby had one of her best games at serving, earning many points – several were Aces! The girls won all 6 sets today!! Way to go, Bu and the Dreamsicles!! 😉 After the game, we went shopping and met up with Megan and her Mom they could go bowling for the afternoon. We came home and did our weekly chores around the house, saw Danica earn the pole at Daytona (1st lady to ever win a pole in NASCAR history!) and Jeff got 2nd – the only two positions that were available today…all the others will come Thursday during the Dual 125’s. The NBA all-star game again had no defense (combined they scored about 175 points) with the West winning. Ann & I got caught up on our DVR shows and later at night I really enjoyed SportsCenter’s tribute to Michael Jordan – who was celebrating his 50th birthday…damn we’re all getting old aren’t we…

Next up is our Waybac section. We continue to feature the works of Gil Hutton. First up are several from the sixties with the family at one of the twin lakes in Monticello; followed by pictures of Cathy in the 60’s; and those are followed by several of Aunt Judy, Cathy & Davis from 1969…

Later, Scheu
