Back to Back…One on One…

I had forgotten how hard this time change is on my old body. I fall asleep at the wrong time and struggle to get going in the mornings. Don’t get me wrong, I like the longer days (we didn’t even have to use any headlights this week in our travels to and from work. The weather was all over the place, which has become the norm. We had lows in the teens and highs in the seventies…we had sunny, windy, rainy and even snowy days. No wonder I can’t shake these sniffling snots…but the HUGE news of the week is that the varsity basketball team repeated as state champions in the 3-A division!!!
On Monday we had…what the hell (?)…frosted windows on the vehicles – man, was it cold. Good Lord…I thought we were done with this stuff! Luke had an interesting day at school by winning (of all things) a paper airplane competition in science class. Finally…something good came of all those planes he made through the years and were scattered throughout the house. :0) Matt tried out for baseball today. Although the hitting was OK for not playing since 8th grade, the running and agility drills absolutely killed him. He really put his body through a workout and he was incredibly sore. He came to the decision that his knee was not quite ready for this amount of activity. He iced his knee, laid on the couch and moaned for about an hour. He said he would not continue trying out for baseball. We’re just glad he came to this decision and no one else had to tell him. Abby had track and then dance practice. Abby was in the newspaper for the National Junior Honor Society. She also received a nomination for the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence in Washington DC. This is the 2nd year in a row she has received this nomination. Way to go, Bu!
Tuesday was a cold day. It actually snowed again – on and off, mind you – but enough to cover the ground. I’m going to go out on a limb and declare it as the last snow of the winter. Thankfully it melted after a couple hours. Poor Matt’s knee was very sore and he was cramping terribly from the baseball workout yesterday. I felt bad for him. He wanted so badly to be able to come back quickly, but the body just won’t hold up. In time, it will come back fully and hopefully he will continue his sporting career at the next level this fall. Abby went in early to school for Student Council and stayed late for track. Luke went with Drew & Angie to the YMCA to work out. Matt picked up student-section tickets for the state championship basketball game this weekend! We tried unsuccessfully to get suite tickets with the Messers. Bryan ended up finding some in another suite, but we decided just to sit with the rest of the Greensburg crowd and made plans to catch up with them after the game. Luke had art class after school and I got my weary, fat butt back on the treadmill.

Abby had softball practice after track on Wednesday. Ann and Shawna held their next After-Prom meeting with the public. Matt continued to nurse his body. I am hoping to have pictures soon from Matt’s trip to the Caribbean. That night was American Idol night. My two faves did not disappoint. Jessica Meuse did Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac and my man Caleb Johnson did Led Zeppelin’s Dazed & Confused! Wow!!
Thankfully, Thursday was warmer. Unfortunately it rained most of the day in Columbus. Ann took the day off to be with her good buddy, Shawna. They went down south and did some shopping and have a nice, quiet day. Abby had track then softball and then dance practice. She was a tired pup when she finally got home that night. Luke & I played basketball outside for about an hour and cheered when both of my favorites made it through to next week on Idol…
It was nice on Friday, getting up to the mid-sixties. I love shorts and sweatshirt weather. Abby had track and then rested up at home with Ann. Meanwhile Luke & went out to Bryan’s house and met up with the boys to watch some college hoops. We saw some great games – especially the ones from Indianapolis. That Louisville vs. Kentucky game was something else…in fact most of the NCAA Big Dance has been outstanding this year! Luke even talked me in to getting the truck out that night. It was the first time it had been started since last year, I think. We have lots of social media pictures to share including Abby with Kenzie; Rick & Lynn in Maui; work friend Scott in FL; Matt with buddies in the Cayman Islands; Rosie & Megan at frozen Niagara Falls; John & June’s oldest grand child and her family; Lindsay got to meet a comedian/TV star; Wayne w/ better half; Metallica playing in the rain (they released a couple new singles (see video section below); Jimmy – who is supposed to have a new solo :LP in the can; Caleb channeling his inner Robert Plant; classic Calvin & Hobbes (1st panel published?); and a new batch of incredible photographs from Led Zeppelin’s infamous RAH show in 1970 surfaced this week…

We were lazy on Saturday morning before getting ready in the mid-afternoon before heading up to Indy’s Fieldhouse to catch the Indiana 3A State Championship game. It featured the defending champion Greensburg Pirates vs. the Bowman Academy Eagles from Gary (who also won last year and in fact won the last two years – but as Class A and then last year as 2-A. So these two teams had won 3 titles the past 3 years which goes to show just how tough of a matchup this was for the championship. We had a great time and got a lot of video from the game (see below in the video section) and several photos. The Pirates were very exciting to watch and set a record for assists with their crisp passing. It was a close game but Greensburg led the whole way. It wasn’t until midway through 4th quarter that the Pirates finally started to pull away. Greensburg’s Macy Holdsworth earned the Mental Attitude Award for the tournament – a very cool honor. We sat up high again, but you could see everything and had a quick route to the concession stand. We were thrilled to see the Pirates win back-to-back championships. This is something our kids will remember all their lives. We sat very near the Drakes and were hoping to spend more time with them, but they stayed for the 4-A game and we left. Matt was good enough to bring all the kids home while Ann & I went out with Bryan & Angie. We went next door to the Pub for dinner and few celebratory beers. Unfortunately Bryan had to work the next day, so we couldn’t stay out too long. We did run in to Ann’s good friend Stacy, who joined us for a couple beers…And Abby was thrilled to meet up with her son.
We slept in on Sunday before getting to our weekly chores. Abby and Luke had ball practices and enjoyed a lovely day in the seventies! We enjoyed watching more college basketball as well as NASCAR racing, which was on the short track of Martinsville. Although Jeff didn’t win, he is still in 4th place overall and looking strong to win his 5th title finally.
