My Foot’s outside the Door

We had another busy week here at the Scheu home. Football season is in full swing now, which means we’re all busier now. Matt continued working for Bryan’s tent company for the last full week before school starts, Abby’s dance activities continue to increase and Luke is all about football…except when he’s practicing basketball. Hello again and welcome to yet another installment of the Scheu Family Blog…
Ann ran the kids to school on Monday so I could go to the dentist where I received a good check-up. Abby had Pirateers after school. Luke had football practice where we worked on offense all practice. We have a long way to go. We have some good players but we also have some that need a lot of time. We have a very inexperienced team. Only about half of our team has been together for more than two years. Many of the teams we play have entire squads that have been playing together for five or more years. Ann took Abby to her first jazz class at Dixon later that night. And Grace Potter brought her new band the Magical Midnight Roadshow to the Conan show.
Tuesday was a cooler day but still beautiful. Luke had football again that night. We worked on blocking and tackling and although we can teach technique, we cannot teach the will and drive it takes to get better…and although we have talent on the team, we need much more to be competitive. It was Soup Night again finally. Ann made her delicious potato soup and Abby had Brittney and Noah over to enjoy the goodness. We ate off that huge pot of soup for a few days this week and I swear it got better each night!
It rained all day on Wednesday. Luke & I had hoped to trim at Mom and Sandy’s house and to also mow at home, but the rain dashed those hopes. Abby had Pirateers practice that evening. Luke went with Drew and Angie to go workout at the YMCA. Matt went out with his buddies to ElRep for dinner and then ran with them all night. We have a ton of social media pictures to share this week: Rob & Sharon put fresh flowers on Mom’s and Grandmaw/Grandpaw’s grave; our lovely ladies; more of Bu solo and with friends – Emma, Noah, Megan; then Aunt June & Lynz in Maui; Aunt Sharon with Nathan & Katie; Steph and bday gal Haleigh; Smith grandkids; Wendy & hubby; Kimmy’s kids with Ryan’s boy; another of the dynamic duo; the Pirates flag is back at midfield!; the original cover of Grace’s new LP and playing live on Conan; #24 memorabilia; Tammie and family; view from the Messers; Aunt Karen & Cathy with family; Abby with “Antics” Young and Pirateers; Bu with school chums; Rick & Lynn at the Colts game in style; loved the #24 paint scheme at Bristol; a cool new shirt I want; a nice write up for Grace; another t-shirt I want; Luke & Drew working out; and Luke and friends at school.

It was a crazy day at work on Thursday: I had four contractors in the facility as we continue our summer upgrade projects. Luke had football practice where we finally got to work on a little defense as we scrimmaged the fifth graders. We also introduced the kids to special teams…man we need help. Luke’s kicking continues to impress. We got to practice early and worked on field goals/PATs. Luke hit 8 or 9 in a row from 20 yards, so we started moving back. He hit a pair from 25, one from 30 and even one from 35! We looked at each other and didn’t say anything but moved it back to 40. He mis-hit the ball twice before striking it good on his 3rd attempt. It fell a couple yards short and Coach Messer blew his whistle for us to lineup. He asked for one more try so we let him take another shot and he hit it perfectly and cleared the crossbar for a 40-yard field goal!! We were all high-fiving. It was pretty cool. The 5th graders were warming up right next to us and they were all shouting too. He was so far back that he was only a few yards from them when he lined up for the kick.
Friday was a fast day. I got my work done early and came home so Luke & I could mow and trim the yard. It was game day as Noah and the Pirate’s varsity football team had their season opener against rival Shelbyville. We have lost the last few to them by 1 or 2 points. Luke & I went early so Bryan & I could get setup for stats. We are doing stats again this year on one of the team’s iPads. We only screwed it a couple times, so we were happy with that. Abby and the Pirateers danced before the game and then again at halftime. Gma & Gigi were there to watch. Matt went down to the sidelines for a while to cheer on the kids. It was a good game but the Pirates again came up just a hair short as a PAT was blocked at the end of the game and they lost by a single point again, 27-28. We got to meet Noah’s parents. They seemed very nice. We went out for dinner at BW&R. I definitely spoiled my diet that night. But they had rum Hurricanes on special and they went down smoothly…so smoothly that Matt drove the boys home and Abby drove the girls home. Despite being sore and tired, Noah came over for a while to hang out with Bu.

Abby & I were up early on Saturday morning for the annual On Eagle’s Wings 5K to benefit the families of the plane crash a couple years back. We finished 383 and 384 out of over 850+ runners. We shaved about 7 minutes off our time from our last 5K. Afterwards, Bu went to Pirateers practice where she attended a hip-hop class with guest instructor Lamar Young. That afternoon we made the trip down to Lawrenceburg for Luke’s first football game of his 6th grade year. We didn’t play them last year but lost by 1 TD two years ago. Luke played fullback and tight end on offense, middle and outside linebacker on defense, kicker on the kickoff team and up-back on the kickoff return team. He ran the ball 5 or 6 times for about 25 yards and looked pretty good. He was in on about 20 tackles on defense. His only kickoff – which was at the start of the game, was really good. It was fielded inside the 5 but they ran it all the way back to quickly put us in a hole early. They also ran in the PAT to lead, 8-0 after just 20 seconds of play. The offense couldn’t do much and turned the ball over on downs. We did fairly well on defense before giving up a long pass for another score. After a decent runback on the kickoff, we finally got a first down. We again looked pretty good on defense before again giving up a long pass for another touchdown. We stopped them on their PAT and went in to halftime, down 3 scores. We made a few adjustments but nothing helped the offense. We moved the ball very little except for our power rushing of Luke and Ehan. On one play, Luke carried four would-be tacklers a few yards before going down. I screwed up in the 4th quarter when I gambled and called an incompatible defensive and blitz scheme which left us vulnerable and they scored easily off-tackle and we went on to lose, 0-28. We were completely out-classed. Later that evening, Ann & I attended the St. Mary’s Festival / Beer Garden. Bryan and his band, Skeeter McGhee played while Ann and I enjoyed the Bud on tap. Matt and Abby went out with friends. Luke went to Drew’s house for the evening. We attended the after-party at Bryan & Angie’s house where we sat around the fire, drinking and singing songs until early the next morning.

We slept in past noon on Sunday and enjoyed a day off. We still had to do our weekly household chores. Luke went out shopping with Ann. He and I were going to attend the Power of the Past as we do each year, but we missed it this year. We watched all our shows on the DVR as well as the new Walking Dead spinoff. Jeff had the Rainbow Warrior paint scheme but his pit crew let him down with two mistakes that put him a lap down but managed a top 20. After that stock car race, we watched the Indy car race where there were several wrecks at the Tricky Triangle – at the end of the race a freak accident sent Justin Wilson to the hospital in a coma. Luke had basketball practice in the early evening at the junior high and Ann made chicken tacos, corn on the cob and chips & salsa for dinner.
Next up is our Waybac section, which continues to feature our first six photo albums of our young family just starting out. We lead off this week with newborn Matt with Mommy & Daddy and Papaw Bryan in March 1996 in Columbus; six-month photos of Matt in September 1996; first birthday party for Matthew in our townhouse in March of 1997 with Grandma Barb in Columbus; Matt & Memaw in our Main St home and in the costume contest at Halloween 1997 (including his peapod / bugger outfit); then birthday party #2 in Greensburg with the grandparents – including a few of Mom – where he got his coveted vacuum cleaner in March, 1998; and then in Versailles for the annual Pumpkin Fest with Gma & Gigi in October of 1998.
