…Really makes Me Jump and Shout

What a lovely autumn week we enjoyed here at the Scheu abode. We had lots of sunshine and cooler temps – shorts and sweatshirt weather is my favorite! Nearly all the leaves are off the trees, the geese are flying south and the fields are all empty. Luke was all about basketball and had his first couple ball games. Abby was all dance; all the time. Matt said he had a good week at school and got good grades on recent tests. Ann continued to rehab her ailing knee. I continued to train for next week’s 5K. And poor Molly injured her ear again and continually shook the droopy thing so much we started calling her “Tweak.” Hello again and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.
Ann had an appointment with our old friend, Dr. Guse on Monday that went very well. He said she is progressing nicely. Luke had basketball practice after school and later Abby had jazz class at Dixon and I hopped on the treadmill because I had lost all my daylight by the time I got home. That’s the problem with falling back – it gets dark so soon. However, I must admit that I slept much better this week and felt rested for the first time in a long time. Later that night we learned that Fred Thompson (actor, politician) had died today.
Ann & I voted before work on Tuesday. Only about a quarter of the eligible voters turned out and because of it we will have a new mayor very soon. Afterwards I walked from my facility to Ann’s office. Luke & I attended a football meeting – the annual chili dinner – at the junior high that night. Only four 6th graders even bothered to show up but there were over a hundred boys there altogether. We met Luke’s coaches for next year and they were very interested in him. When we left, we kept up the tradition that Matt started some 16 years ago and took Gigi her Polar Pop. Abby and Ann couldn’t be with us for the first time in a over a decade. Abby had Pirateers practice and Ann went out with Shawna to help her resolve some unfortunate drama surrounding CYO volleyball. Abby & Britney did not have Homework Club but did attend Ping Pong Club for fun. Abby worked that night at Dixon Dance Studio and I hopped back on the treadmill. Luke brought home an award for his work in his English class. Way to go, buddy! We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: Dad with Charlie and then Lynn; Nathan’s 40th birthday with Katie; Scheu cousins enjoying Halloween – Jackie, Jack, Barney; Abby & Megan; a few miscellaneous ones; Darren Woodson’s ROH ceremony; great pictures of what may be Jeff’s final victory of his career; Abby and BFFs; me with an ElRep margarita as big as my head; Allen & Frankie; downtown G’burg; recent celeb deaths; Grace entertaining the troops in the Middle East last week; and several Calvin & Hobbes panels.

Thursday was yet another gorgeous day. Ann had another doctor appointment and had another good check-up. She also enjoyed her next round of pool PT. Abby & Luke came home with Noah after school to play Wii. I walked to Ann’s office again after work. I cut about 5 minutes off my time! Abby had tap class that evening. I was supposed to enjoy a boys’ night out for TNF at Messer’s Bar but instead fell asleep early on the couch. And sadly, car designer George Barris (best known as the creator of the original Batmobile) died today.
Friday was a fast day. Ann made Molly a vet appt on Monday to have surgery on her ear. It was sectional championship night. North Decatur was the last team in our county, still in the state tourney and unfortunately they lost. Ann went out with Amy for the evening. Luke & I took Abby to dinner at ElRep to celebrate her getting an A on her Honors Algebra test! We are so proud of our overachieving daughter. Let’s review her current credentials – class president, student council member, junior honor society, junior optimist club, perennial honor roll, top 1% of her class, award-winning dancer, funny & witty, lovely – yeah; you could say we’re proud of her. :0) We came home and watched movies on the big screen – Minions, San Andreas and Terminator Genesis.
Luke had basketball practice, early on Saturday morning. Ann went scrapbooking with Shawna all day. Luke & I worked outside for several hours. It was a perfect fall day to do yard work. We mowed at Gma & Gigi’s house. We raked up all the leaves in our front and back yard. Now I know why we usually just mow / mulch them up. We raked a couple weeks ago and had two bags…this time we had nine bags. And these are big bags – 55 gallon ones – that we compacted the leaves into. Afterwards we grudgingly mowed both lawns. By the time we finished, we were pooped. I was sore all night and could barely move by the time I went to bed. Damn I’m old… We had lunch at KFC, which was really good. Abby had her friend Mary (Luke’s girlfriend’s older sister) over to choreograph an upcoming Pirateers dance. Ann came home and made dinner…courtesy of Papa John’s. Bu’s buddy Cody came over for dinner and they played Mario until after midnight. Luke & I were both out early.

We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday morning. We did our weekly household chores before heading out to South Decatur Elementary for opening day of Luke’s basketball season. They faced Batesville Blue in the opener. The Pirates came out hot and were quickly up by double digits. Although Luke didn’t start, he played most of the game. He scored his first two baskets of the year and was a rebounding machine. The Pirates looked very sharp and won easily, 56-25. Luke & I huddled around my phone to watch NFL Red Zone for the next hour as we waited for game 2 of the day. In the second game, the Pirates faced a much-improved Morristown. We still had the superior team and again pulled away early and had a commanding lead by halftime. Luke again scored a bucket or two, set picks, got a ton of rebounds and dove after loose balls on the floor. Again, the Pirates looked good – though there were times when they got a little sloppy – and won easily against a pretty good team, 64-26 to start the season at 2-0. Luke’s combined stats for the day: On the offensive side of things he was 4 of 8 from the floor and 0 for 2 at the stripe for a total of 8 points and 2 assists. Defensively he had 14 rebounds on the day to go with 4 steals and 7 forced turnovers. He also had 3 fouls each game. We hurried home afterwards so Luke & I could watch the recorded Colts game. They hosted Peyton Manning and the undefeated Broncos. Somehow they pulled off the upset and won by 3 points just days after the Colts fired their offensive coordinator. The Colts looked very good against the best defense in the league. Peyton could not set the record for the most wins and came up like 3 yards short of the all-time passing yards record as well…too bad he couldn’t set them in Indy… Abby had Noah over for dinner. Ann made cheeseburgers and potato wedges. The Cowboys were on SNF that night and looked pretty good, all things considered. But my favorite player, Sean Lee, got hurt again and may have his 2nd concussion in six months. The game went in to OT with a last-second Cowboy’s field goal that ricocheted-in off the left upright. Dallas hasn’t won since Romo went down…and this night was no different. They’ve now lost six in a row…
