The Memories of a Man in his Old Age…are the Deeds of a Man in his Prime

Aww…you gotta love allergy season. Even though you feel awful for a few days, you know that the pollen of spring is merely a precursor of those hot summer days comin’ just around the corner. It was a very warm week for us and we hated to close up the house again. It was nice to have a spring for a few weeks this year. In recent years it seemed that we went straight from winter to summer. I wonder if this means it will be a hotter summer than last year. Matt landed a job. Abby had a little more free time. Luke had another big win in baseball while pondering his football future. And Ann finally saw a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel with her knees. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
Monday was amazing – sunny and 80! We were all back to work and school. Abby wasn’t feeling well that morning so Ann met her at Columbus Ped’s for walk-ins. Not sure what is up with her stomach – perhaps a pulled muscle from Saturday’s performances? Remember, she danced pretty much the entire day with rehearsals lasting all morning and the four performances that night. She was able to suck it up and went in to school. She had Mary over later that evening to choreograph Pirateer dances then they made a spaghetti dinner, complete with garlic bread and salad. Thank you, ladies! Matt got the job he was hoping for and started orienting that night, awaiting background checks to begin employment. I walked the Learning Center campus after work then came back to town and picked up Luke & Drew at Gma’s house. We went out for ice cream at Dairy Point and the boys enjoyed riding in the back of Betty White on a gorgeous evening. They made some kind of video out in the woods for school later that night. I did my stretches while the girls worked on dance…the dogs helped them (or hindered, I’m not really sure?). Later, Matt & I bought a new A/C unit for the family room. It was so hot back there – especially when the sun beats on that end of the house in the late afternoon and in to evening. We decided on a portable unit that resembles R2-D2 and is much easier to install. Ann was worn out from the day and went to bed early. She continues to adjust to her meds and life w/o a major gland. Now, as promised, we lead off this week with photos of last weekend’s Dixon Dance Revue at the high school along with this year’s team pictures at the studio.

Abby was in early to school for a Student Council meeting on Tuesday. Luke & Drew were at Gma’s again after school and came home to re-shoot their video project in the woods. Abby had Pirateers practice. Ann made popcorn for dinner. Matt worked out at the high school gym. I walked the People Trail to the airport and back after work and then did stretches later as Matt & I watched the X-Files. I love that he’s binge-watching a show that Ann & I followed from the first to last episode, back in the day. Matt & I put in the A/C unit in our bedroom…only to have it die and not come back on – not sure what happened. So we took it out and sat it to the side while we figure out if/when we want to replace it.
Wednesday was pretty much cloudy the entire time and the threat of storms loomed the entire day. Luke & Matt went to Columbus that evening for haircuts with Jami. Meanwhile, Bryan & I held baseball practice at North Park. Ann split her day between the Columbus & Greensburg offices. Abby was again not feeling well and came home from school and crashed the entire evening. Here is a collection of pictures with Abby & Britney at the Zac Brown Band concert at Deer Creek last weekend.

It rained and stormed all morning and it to the early afternoon on Thursday. Ann worked at the Greensburg office again. Matt did some job shadowing at his new place of work. Luke & I went to the park for our next baseball game as the 13U Marlins took on the Reds. Luke was the starting pitcher as we won again – in a route, 14-1. Luke had 6 Ks as he struck out the side in his two continuous innings. However, he did give up a walk (purposely?) and then made a throwing error on a pick-off attempt. His fill-in at first base made an error on the next batter and he gave up his first run of the year (an unearned one). Luke was 2-3 from the plate with a single, double & his first strike out of the year, as he tried to foul-off a bad pitch – in order to get another pitch, rather than just taking the walk. Just take the walk, Scheu! It was the first out he has made all year. He had four stolen bases and scored two runs. Afterwards, the kids talked us in to eating at ElRep with the Messers (call it a coaches meeting?). We enjoyed a couple margaritas and Matt was the DD. Thanks buddy!

Friday was an amazing day – sunny and 90 degrees! Congratulations go out to Abby who ran for and won VP of her upcoming junior class! She has been the student body president the past two years but did not run for it this year because her BFF Emma ran for it – and she did not want to oppose her (what a good friend!). She was awarded a chance to drive the Crossfire after school and met friends at ElRep for dinner and cruising afterwards. She was on cloud nine… Matt officially completed orientation and got the job at Aspen Place! We are proud of him putting his mind to something and going for it. Luke went to Gma’s after school then with me to run errands. He later rode his bike around the neighborhood for an hour, as he “preps for the 5K next month.” I walked the People Trail around campus and came home to that sweet A/C…ahh….AND cheesy popcorn for dinner to boot! :0) My wife rocks!

We got an early start on Saturday to start the long, holiday weekend. Abby got up and went to South Decatur for graduation and then went out to grad parties all day. Luke & I mowed and trimmed the lawn before it rained. Matt had his first day of work. Ann cooked a big dinner and managed to use every dish in our cabinets, I think! Luke enjoyed the outdoors as much as he could – playing basketball, riding bikes, and playing with the dogs in the backyard. The day flew by and we enjoyed doing nothing in particular. :0)
We slept in Sunday morning. It was another gorgeous day. Matt went in to work. Ann grilled out for lunch. We watched the Indy 500 and enjoyed all the news pre-race coverage – love watching all those people pour in to the place. The pre-game build-up is like nothing else. It was an exciting race that we got to watch live! Yes; they actually lifted the blackout for the first time in my lifetime, I believe. A rookie racing for Andretti won the centennial running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing! Alexander Rossi was running about 50 mph when he crossed the row of bricks to win. Wow… After the race, Luke & I played a best-of-seven HORSE tourney, in which I swept him. As a consequence, he had to call me, “Basketball Lord,” all day. Ha! He and Matt played for a while as well. Abby ended up going out with her boyfriend that evening. Matt was pretty worn out after work and didn’t do a whole lot that night. Luke got to drive all the vehicles today, including a trip around the neighborhood in the Silverado. We later watched movies and sports until the wee hours of the morning.
We slept in on Memorial Day morning (this is how all Mondays should be!) and gradually got up to do our weekly household chores. Matt had the day off with us. Luke played outside and moved all the vehicles again, including driving Betty White around the block with me. He had Oakley over to play basketball, ride bikes and walk around the neighborhood. Abby had Mary over to work on Pirateer dance routines. Ann “made” pizza from Papa Johns for lunch. Afterward, the boys went to the city pool, the girls left, Matt fell asleep, Ann napped…and that allowed me to FINALLY have a little peace. I watched the recorded UFC Fight Night and NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 from yesterday, chilled in the air conditioning and nodded off a few times myself. It was a nice way to end the week. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: Abby & her class she teaches; Tom & Cathy; June & Lindsay; Bu & Shelby; Nate & daughter; Bu & Cody, Abs, Molly & Mary; Nathan’s girls; Abby’s friend/mentor/co-worker/coach…and now Colts Cheerleader, Kuyhlia; some throwbacks for Lindsay & Haley’s bdays this week with some classic photos of Uncle John, Aunt June, Barney, Steph and the birthday girls; a few shots of the lead-up this week to the 100th running of the Indy 500; the funniest meme I saw this week; Coach Schreiber (LP alum) is hanging it up at PU; Megadeth drummer Nick Menza passed away this week; Gigi at the station, the Hot Wheels version of the Borg-Warner trophy; and a sweet collage of the Scheu bday girls.
