Summer’s Here and the Time is Right…

We had a short week, thanks to the holiday weekend. But have you ever noticed that when you miss Monday at work, it seems that you have two or three Mondays that week? It was the end of another school year as the junior high and high school ended their spring semesters just as Matt began his summer term. Luke continued with baseball and had highs and lows this week. Ann continued to recover from her recent surgery as she gears up for her next and I continued to work towards my next 5K. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
After the long weekend, it was a rude Tuesday morning as everyone headed back to work and school. The kids were in the home stretch of the spring semester and looking the summer break squarely in the face. After a long day, I walked PT out to the airport and then picked up Luke and headed out to the complex for our first baseball doubleheader of the year. In the first game, we faced the Reds. Luke pitched 1 inning, giving up 1 het and striking out 3. He also played 1st base where he saw very little action. He was 1-1 from plate with a walk and a home run (inside the park) – his 1st of the year. He also had a pair of stolen bases and scored 2 runs as we won again, 11-1. We faced the Pirates in the nightcap. Luke played 1st base and shortstop and again had very limited action. At the dish, he was 0-2 with a flyout and a strikeout. We won big again, 12-1. In both games, we called off the dogs once we were up by 10. Abby spent the night out running with friends. She stopped by the ball diamonds for awhile with Britney & Megan and then ended up back at the house for studying out on the back porch until late. I want to give a big shout-out to our friend Judy W for taking the time to pick up t-shirts for all of us at the Indy 500 this weekend…and especially for my event-exclusive Hot Wheel car! I love it, Stretch…thank you! :0)
Wednesday was a fast day. Matt started his summer semester at U Indy. Abby had Brit & Cody over to hang out then went over to Jaden’s to “study” for her last couple finals…wonder if one of those was Anatomy? Luke had an easy day at school – after turning in his laptop, he got to enjoy movies and putt-putt golf. He also enjoyed having a rare night off. He wanted to skip school today and tomorrow, since he had no tests and had nothing else to do at school. Although it was hard to make a logical argument, we still made him go. After work, Ann helped Shawna finish up her scrapbooks before the big graduation party this weekend. After work, I walked a very short loop of the Columbus People Trail a few times as it looked really black to the north and eventually began to sprinkle on me. By the time I finished, it was drizzling but not raining too hard. I guess it rained pretty hard at home, but somehow I missed it. I did my stretches when I got home and almost opened up the house since the temps dropped 20 degrees. Unfortunately the humidity was awful so we kept it closed up. Here are some various pix from the last couple weeks.

Luke & Bu enjoyed their last day of school on Thursday. Our Black Betty broke down on the way to work. We managed to limp it in to Hartsville as it overheated. I put some coolant in her but it ended up running straight to the ground so we had her towed to Acra’s. Thanks to Mom O for coming to our rescue and driving us home!! We hopped in Betty White and eventually got to work about mid-morning. As it turned out, we lost the water pump in it, so they kept it through the weekend. Obviously, all that excitement made for a very fast day at work for us. I walked the Learning Center campus afterwards and was back pain-free! That was the first time in a very long time. Those stretches are finally starting to pay off, I think. Luke had a late baseball game vs. the Reds. It was the first time we hadn’t played at the 5:30/6:00 hour and we had a different umpire. I don’t know if it was that or what the problem was, but we came out flat and never got the ship corrected. Luke was 0-2 at the plate with another strikeout and a groundout. Although we are enjoying our free time on the weekends, we are really questioning the move to league play this year. He pitched 1 inning again and had a 3 up / 3 down inning with two strikeouts. We looked awful at the plate and lost our first game of the year, 1-3. We have to give credit to their pitchers, who played their butts off that night. Obviously they needed that win and to be honest, we probably needed that loss (though we had dreams of going undefeated this year). Many of our players had gotten very over-confident and a little cocky. This should knock them down a peg. You know, sometimes you need to get your butt kicked every once in a while…it builds character. It will be interesting to see how the boys respond this next week. Matt returned to work where he is really enjoying working in the A/C and not coming home exhausted afterwards. Abby went out with friends after school and was out until after dark. Annie was pretty tired after the game and came home to rest. Meanwhile Matt, Luke & I went out to BWR with Bryan & Drew after game. Megan came home with Abby that evening and ended up spending the night with us.

Friday marked the start of summer break for Abby & Luke. Matt went up to U Indy for class and had the day off from work. Following work, Ann went to bed and slept all night as she continues to struggle with her thyroid levels. Abby went out with friends that night while Luke & I mowed the lawn in anticipation of rain all weekend. The boys got takeout for dinner and we chilled in the A/C on another hot / humid evening. We were saddened to hear the news that night that “The Greatest” – Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) passed away that evening.
Luke was up early on Saturday morning to go work for Gigi & WTRE as the Disco Duck at the Westport Covered Bridge Festival parade. Abby was also up and out the door early to attend graduation where a couple of her close friends as well as her boyfriend took their first step into adulthood. She went with Jaden out to his grandma’s house for a big lunch and then went running around to several grad parties with her buddies the rest of the day and night. Matt had to work and so he also was out of the house. So for a while, Ann & I actually had a little peace in the house. We celebrated our private time with a lunch at Panda Garden and a nap! That night, Ann made dinner and afterwards, Matt, Luke & I played basketball until dark. Abby got home just as Matt went out with his friends. Ann / I enjoyed a quite night of watching movies until after midnight.
We did our weekly household chores on Sunday. Luke & I ran errands and Matt went in to work. Ann and Abby got dressed up and went out to a few graduation parties and then came home and slept the rest of the afternoon. Abby went out with Jaden despite not feeling well. Ann made cheesy popcorn for dinner despite having a nasty headache. The boys played video games and watched videos. And Ann & I watched a couple movies until bedtime. It was a very relaxing way to end the week. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: our lovely Bu solo and with friends; Lola & Molly; Kimmy & Cathy; Aunt Sharon & Nate’s girls; the Drakes at the Speedway; Barney & fam, circa late 90s; the Messers; Charlie in NJ; Cathy & Tom at the 500; FC campus; the old Columbian Park pool; grad party invites from Shawna’s & Amy’s kids; more sites of the Hot Wheels / Indy 500 cross-promotion; Calvin & Hobbes and Stargate swag; Abs & Meggie; iconic photos of Ali; Devin is going to Regionals; another old Columbian Park pic; and more swag of some of my favorite stuff…Father’s Day presents?? :0)

For our Shit that Luke Says, we were riding in the truck to the store today when we started talking about food…more specifically who the better cook is…Ann or Memaw. I said Gma was a better baker but I preferred Ann’s cooking…only because she knows how I like my food seasoned. Luke quipped, “I like Gma’s hamburgers better because Mom’s are full of carbonation!” Huh?! :0)

Next up is our video section which includes one new home movie this week and several from around the internet.

And that does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya Mom.
Later, Scheu
