(We) got to Move On…(We) Never seem to Slow Down

We enjoyed a gorgeous week, here in south-central Indiana. This is what summer is all about – hot temps, lots of playing and enjoying time together. Luke played three league baseball games and two AAU basketball games. Abby was involved in dance all week and started the job search. Matt continued working and commuting up to U Indy for school. Ann continued to adjust to post-thyroid life. And I geared up for my fourth 5K since my heart attack and reflected on the significance of the milestone anniversaries this week… Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
Abby was up and out the door early on Monday morning for Pirateers practice. Big thanks to Memaw for transporting Lukey to basketball camp this week! We couldn’t do it without you, Mom – thanks! It was the two year anniversary of my heart attack (or at least the treatment for it). I celebrated it by walking the People Trail after work for about an hour as I prepped for the big 5K Color Run this coming weekend. Both Abby & Luke went to the pool with their buddies (Mary & Oakley). Matt headed back up to school for the day. Abby had Cody over for dinner. Ann made tacos and jalapeno dip. Luke ended up staying the night at Oakley’s house and we got Black Betty back from the shop. Here are some pictures from our recent adventures.

Tuesday was a picture-perfect day with temps in the 70s, no humidity and a cool breeze – doesn’t get much better in this neck of the woods. Abby again had Pirateers practice then went around town with her buddy Cody to pick up applications. She was still not feeling well…it’s been about two weeks now that she hasn’t quite been herself. I walked the PT again after work. There was a great big, four-engine airplane doing touch-n-go’s the entire time. It was really cool, hearing that low rumble of the props…made for a neat backdrop for my walk. Luke had basketball camp again that day then had a baseball game that evening vs. the Pirates. He was the starting pitcher, going 3 innings and giving up 1 hit, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts and 0 runs. He picked a runner off 3rd base as well! He was the winning pitcher, as we won easily, 11-0. He also played 1st base and recorded a few putouts. He was 2-3 at the dish with a single, double and strikeout. He had 2 RBI’s, 3 stolen bases and scored 2 runs. Drew only played 1 inning with us that night and then got to have a “cup of coffee” in the big league. After the game, Bryan & I sat with Coach Nobbe and enjoyed watching them win as well. How cool is that? We are very happy for and proud of Drew. Matt worked 2nd shift. After the game, we all met up at Chili’s for dinner…it took us three cars to get us all there, but it was nice getting just the five of us together for a quiet dinner. We were able to open the house up, which made for a perfect night’s sleep to top it off… We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: Abby and friends (Shelby, Megan, Britney, etc); Wendy & Bethany; Haley & kids; Karsen; Phyllis; Matt a couple years ago; PDT; Votto hit a milestone; Hot Wheels; Calvin & Hobbes; Terry & Chrysti’s youngest daughter is getting married; more Bu with me and her friends; Brent had a bday this week; Aunt Sharon & Angie; Miles set off on his trip; Dana & her oldest; Hot Wheels in Vegas at the Beatles Store – love these Yellow Submarine cars – will have to get a set for Father’s Day if my wife can pull it off (hint hint hint); more Hot Wheels, Reds win again; Shelby went to State; and a cool silo in rural Indiana.

We enjoyed another gorgeous day on Wednesday with the house still opened up. Luke again had basketball camp. Abby was still not feeling well. She needed the day off and took advantage of it by sleeping all day. She didn’t get out of bed until after dark. Matt had school up at U Indy. I feel bad for his commute as they continue to do construction in an area that directly affects him. He sat in traffic for quite awhile on the way home. I walked for nearly an hour on the People Trail after work. Ann was not feeling well again – came home and went to sleep for the night.
Thursday was long day. It was an amazing late spring day. It would’ve been Mom & Dad’s 38th wedding anniversary. I walked the People Trail again for over an hour after work. Luke again had basketball camp at the high school. He missed the opening session of football workouts that night because he played in a doubleheader at the baseball diamonds that evening. Our first game was against the Reds. Luke started at first base, recorded 2 putouts and tagged a kid out when he came off 1st base too early after a throw-over. He later moved to shortstop and although he dove for one ball up the middle, did not get any other action. He reached base all three times he was up. He 2-2 with a single, double and was hit by a pitch. He hit the ball hard – both went to the fence…the double almost went over the fence. In fact, we thought it had a first. He had 5 stolen bases, scored 2 runs and we won easily, 13-1. After a short break, we were right back at it – this time vs. the Pirates. Luke was 1-2 from the plate with a double that again almost went out. He also had a walk and a pop up. He had another stolen base and scored two runs. He was also the starting pitcher, thrown 3 innings and getting the win again. He recorded 7 strikeouts and we again won 13-1. Matt worked then came out to watch the game. Abby had Pirateers then came out to watch the first game before heading back out with Cody to pickup more applications. Later, we took Tonya back to the shop due to still leaking inside and grabbed drive-thru from Wendy’s. Ann & Bu were still not feeling well but powered through it boldly. After the showers came through last night, the humidity and heat began to return. We ended up closing up the house before we went to bed.

Abby went out early on Friday morning with her friend and mentor Kuyhlia, who was headed up to Indy to get her hair done with the Colts Cheerleader hair stylist. They went out for lunch and did some shopping afterwards. Luke had basketball camp, came home for a long nap then walked down to Oakley’s birthday party. Matt went to Cincinnati with Jamie to the Reds / A’s game. They scored awesome seats in the club level and had access to one of the suites. Awesome! Ann went scrapbooking at Mrs. B’s. I walked over an hour after work, finding a new way around the same area, there on the north side of town. I came home and took Bu out to dinner at Mayasari Indonesian Grill for dinner. It was very good. She went out shopping with her friend Baker and got home about the same time as Matt. I don’t know how late Ann came home; I was worn out and fell asleep about midnight.
We were up early on Saturday for the 5K Color Run (benefits the Big Brother / Big Sister charity). Ann came out and cheered us on…we can’t wait until she can join us one of these days! Luke ended up having to pull out of the race at the last minute due to an AAU basketball tourney in Indy that day. He left the house shortly after we did. Thankfully, Britney was gracious enough to join us in Luke’s place and we had a great time. It was our first color run – Matt ran about 1/3 of the race and easily came in 1st in our group. The girls & I walked until the final 100 yards when we sprinted and had a good finish. We ended right at the 50 minute mark. I was very surprised at that time because I know our pace was much better than any previous race. We passed Gigi on the track and later spoke with her about the event. Come to find out, it is not a 5K course but rather a 5 mile track! After we learned that, we felt pretty good about our time. We came home to shower and then went on to Baili’s grad party out at the Ewing farm. I hadn’t been out there in about 15 years or so. It was a nice get together and the food was really good. Matt & I had good intentions of mowing the yard but we were too tired and it was really hot so we decided to stay in the A/C and take naps instead. :0) Luke called from Indy and said they had lost their 1st two games and were eliminated from the tourney. They played against freshman teams! He said he had 4 points in the 1st game but none in the 2nd one. He said he played quite a bit and had a bunch of rebounds. Meanwhile, the four of us all took naps that afternoon. Matt left in the early evening to go up and spend the night at his friend Patrick’s house. Abby was wiped out and did not get up to go to the other graduation parties she had planned to attend, When she eventually got up, the girls and I went to BWR for dinner. Luke and the boys got to watch the Indiana / Kentucky All-Stars play, which was really cool! It was really late by the time I picked him up from the high school.

We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday morning. I got up before everyone else and went out to mow and trim the yard. It was already pretty warm and really humid. I’m glad I got out there when I did as the temps soared in to the upper 90s that day. Luke eventually got up and helped me. After showering, we did our weekly household chores. We watched last night’s USA soccer game and the NASCAR Michigan race. I talked to Dad and we talked about the significance of the day. It would’ve been Mom’s 67th birthday today. It obviously still hurts. Most of the time we stay so busy that I really don’t think about it all the time anymore now…but on days like this, it’s all I think about. I’m sure we all go through this and I’m at least thankful to have had the years that I did with her in my life. Cancer sucks. Abby had Mary over to work on choreographing a new dance then they met up with Emma and another Pirateer to work out. She ran around with other friends the rest of the day then ended up over at Jaden’s house that night. Luke & Oakley played all afternoon and then spent the night at his house. Ann & I watched movies until late and wound down another busy week, here at the Scheu abode…
Next up is our Waybac section. We still have enough photos from our first six picture albums of our young family that Ann put together to last us another couple weeks. And we still have several goodies from Mom & Dee’s moves earlier this spring. We lead off this week with a few more shot of Ann’s senior picture photo shoot in 1988; then one for Gigi in 1993 at the station; next we head up to LaPorte for Mom & Dad’s first Bayliner, docked on Pine Lake – Cap ‘n Ron in May ’96; then down to Rossville at the Dream House for Matt’s belated baby shower with Morgan family and friends in June ’96; next we go to Lafayette for the big Scheu family Christmas at John & June’s Lingle Ave home in December ’96; then we head out to the Ryle Addition for Gigi’s bday in July ‘7 as well as the after party on the 4th of July at Memaw & Gigi’s house; then a couple pix of Matt & I playing at a work get-together in Columbus, a few days later with Ann & Matt going for a dip at the Greensburg city pool and a few days after that heading up to LaPorte for swim and boat ride in Pine Lake – all in June ’98; Matt & I in the newspaper in September ’98; next we have several from about 2003 – Grace Easter egg hunting at Gma’s house on Main St in April, playing out at her 1st home in Westport, posing for dance at Dixon and posing with her teddy; Keith, Rosie & Megan circa 2003; and then a few from 2004 – Gracie with & w/o Dee and a cute pic from a calendar that Dee made for Ann.
