Hot Summer Nights…That’s My Time of the Year

Luke and I were talking the other day and we were discussing how he has only a few more weeks before his summer vacation is over already. He couldn’t believe it. To that, I said to him that there are three sure signs that summer vacation is nearing the end: league baseball is over, the fair is in town and Walmart has removed their lawn & garden items from the parking lot. Sure enough, all three came true this week, so it won’t be long before the kids will be back in school. The last few weeks of summer break always go the fastest… Luke & Bu had moratorium this week from their school sports. Matt & Abby increased their workload this week. And Ann & I focused on improving our health – Ann nursing her knee and me focusing on increasing exercise. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
We were up early on Monday morning for the annual Tri Kappa 4th of July Parade. Luke & Drew decorated our mountain bikes and rode them in the parade. Abby danced with her Pirateers and the band. The parade was a noticeably shorter this year with an obviously smaller crowd – due to all the rain. We sat at our usual corner, in front of the Presbyterian church. This year, Mom, Matt & Baili sat with Ann & I. Afterwards we all met up at Mom & Sandy’s house for a big lunch again. It was also a smaller (I detect a trend) crowd than usual with Mom & Gigi, Ann & I and the kids; Dee & Jamie; Linda & Dave, and Baili & Mary. Later, Abby went out running with Mary and Regan. The trifecta came home to do some painting and ended up body painting instead. Matt was able to come to the parade & lunch before he had to get to work. Ann & I came home and chilled on the couches, watching movies on the big screen and napping – a perfect way to end our four-day weekend.

It was back to work for Ann I on Tuesday. I got back to walking after work and went for about an hour. Abby had no soccer (moratorium week) and instead had training at work. Luke also had no football practice due to moratorium. Abby did have Pirateers at some point, I believe. Matt worked again at the old folks’ home. He really enjoys working there – not that he enjoys work, but he appreciates the job. We sat on the back porch and watched the city fireworks at the park once it got dark. Ex-Colts QB, Jim Sorgi stopped by again and talked to the kids today, looking for Ann’s cryo machine. …but she had it at work. Memaw had carpal tunnel surgery on her wrist and was doing well that evening.
Wednesday was a stormy, humid day. We saw the fair rides had arrived at the fairgrounds on the way in to work! Jim Sorgi was at Ann’s work to pick up his machine from Ann. The girls enjoyed meeting him. I walked over 5K after work. Luke had Drew over and then the boys went to Oakley’s house to spend the night. Abby worked at BWR again that night and Matt worked at Aspen Place. Ann enjoyed porch time with Shawna & Kristi that night and made homemade frozen strawberry Petron margaritas ~ yum! Later, Bu & I dropped Tonya off at the shop to get that darn leak fixed again – 3rd time’s the charm, right? We have a ton of new social media pictures to share this week.

Thursday was another hot, humid day. I walked three and a half miles after work. I got a new app on my phone that will track my workouts, called Map My Walk. It is really cool, if you’re in to that type of thing, I guess. Abby had Pirateers but no soccer. It was opening night of the fair and of course, Luke was begging to go. He called me a few times at work, bugging me incessantly. Abby worked with Student Council at the fair, helping to park cars in the main lot as one of those yard stick spinners, directing you where to go. Luke got back from Oakley’s house to do a few chores, clean up and then get out to the fair with Oakley for a few hours. Matt stayed out of trouble by working again. So it was a quiet night on the couches for Ann & I. She made us cheesy popcorn for dinner – one of our favorites…

Friday went from foggy to stormy to hot, but the one common theme was the humidity – the air was thick as pea soup. I walked 3 ½ miles after work and was absolutely soaked afterward. Luke had Oakley over again and then they returned to the fair and later he spent the night with us. Matt enjoyed a rare day off. He took Bu to pick up Tonya from Don Meyer Ford after the storms blew through. Abby then met up with her buddy Baker and they attended the Luke Bryant concert up at Deer Creek. Ann ended up going scrapbooking with Shawna at Mrs. B’s, so Matt & I went out for dinner at ElRep. We had a good time and it’s pretty cool that he is growing up and is a cool young man. It was margarita night, so I got one of the big ones and Matt drove us home. :0) Thanks buddy!
We all slept in on Saturday morning. Oakley went home and Luke & I mowed and trimmed. It was noticeably less humid, thankfully. Granted, it was still warm in the sun but overall much nicer to be outside. I had trouble with my old mower again. This is three weeks in a row and it’s getting worse. I’ll have to see if Philip can work on it again for me. So Lukey finished up mowing while I trimmed. Afterwards, Abby & I called customer service to get her phone working. It turned out to be a storage issue that was gumming everything up and she was happy afterward. She actually had 8 gb of messages! She went on to BWR to work. Matt went back to work at Aspen and Ann went scrapping again at Mrs. B’s. Luke & “Mitch” (actually Luke – Phyllis & Dick’s grandson) went to the fair and Ann & I surprised Abby by going on a dinner date at her work. Our little Bu was the cutest hostess in the place. Luke spent the night with us and Abby had Britney over after work. They ended up going to pick up Megan and the three of them took over the living room, where they spent the night. Here are a bunch of random pictures from this week’s various adventures…

We slept in again on Sunday and slowly got up and did our weekly household chores. Ann made biscuits and gravy for the girls. Matt went in to work for the day. We dropped off Tonya at the park and parked Betty White at WTRE in our usual spot for the annual Fair Parade. Luke was in the parade this year, on the WTRE float as a radio. Abby, of course, danced the route with the Pirateers and band. We noticed we have new neighbors back behind us in the new edition. They have a bunch of stuff stored outside in their yard, which hopefully won’t stay there permanently. They were also out trenching the back lot, so not sure what the heck is going on there, but it will suck if we can’t go back there and play ball anymore…plus it took forever to get grass to grow back there, so I hope they don’t till it up or anything stupid. …I wonder if they know that’s a flood plain that looks like a pond every time it rains? The Fair Parade was bigger this year and Park Road was crammed full of attendees. It was a beautiful summer evening for a parade. We had the gazebo set up over the truck and we sat in the back again for a front row view of the show. We’ve been in the ‘TRE front yard for nearly 20 years running now, I think. Mom joined us as did Britney and her friend from out of town, Veronica. We got a ton of candy again – mostly thanks to the cute little girls, no doubt! We’ll have pictures and videos next of the kids in the parade next week. We came home and Ann grilled steak filets on the grill and made corn on the cob and potatoes for dinner. Luke ended up staying out at the fair afterwards and hung out with friends on the midway. Abby came home with Mary and got cleaned up before heading out there to the fairgrounds herself. She brought Lukey home for us. It was a great day of sports on the TV, thanks to our DVR – MMA (UFC 200 Early Prelims, Prelims & Main Card), racing (NASCAR & Indy Car) and baseball (Minor League All-Star game). It was a relaxing way to end another busy week…
Next up is our Waybac segment. We have a few more of the early photo album contents of our young family in the 90s and nuggets found during Mom & Dee’s moves. We lead off this week with our now-deceased neighbor, Ed and his widow Ginny in Missouri on a WTRE trip in ’93; then on to a cool set of photos of Matt with Mike & I in Columbus is January, ’97; then Matt with Ann & I at what I believe is the old Market Square Arena to see a Disney on Ice show in February ’97; then up to Lafayette with Matt playing with his buddy PJ at Dad & Barb’s cabin in July ’97; next we go to the Indy Zoo to ride the carousel in August ’97; then up to Canada to Niagara Falls in July ’98; then various travels (my God, we were always on the go, weren’t we??) with Matt – East Aurora, Rossville, Lafayette and then Greensburg in July ’98; Matt, Megan, Abby & Gigi in various activities in ’04; and then a set of cute ones of Gracie & Dee in ’05.
