News had just Come Over…We had Five Years Left to Cry In

Well we survived another crazy week. While following the awful flooding in the Houston area and hoping Aunt Sue remained safe, we had another full week of sports, school and work. Our weather was all over the place this week as remnants from Harvey moved through the area. Matt began his senior year at college. Abby had another pair of soccer games and finally got a win! Luke had another big football game, filled with a few personal bests. The kids all got to spend time with their significant others (another sign that Ann & I are getting old). Ann’s knees were feeling better from the shots she received…or was it due to the sunshine and spirits? I fell a little short of my walking goals and have some changes to make after my annual physical. And we reflected on the 5th anniversary of Mom’s death, which brought a tear or two to the eyes of this writer. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog. As promised last week, here are pictures from last Saturday’s football game vs. Lawrenceburg.

It was back to work and school on Monday morning. It was Matt’s first day of his (first) senior year of college at U Indy. Luke had a good day at school then went to football practice. Abby had soccer practice after a long day of school then worked at the Dixson Dance Studio. She came home to eat then later returned to Dixon to practice with Kuyhlia on their dance. Ann had a busy day as she ran to both a hair appointment then to a doctor appointment to get shots in her knees. Let’s hope it helps her and lasts longer than last time! I walked about 3.5 miles after work then came home and paid bills while Ann cooked a surprisingly tasty pasta dish and crazy bread for dinner. We were glad to see Lola doing much better that evening. As promised last week, here are pictures from last Saturday’s soccer game vs. Oldenburg Academy. See if you can find where Abby stands up for herself and her team, giving the girls the spark and leadership they so dearly needed this year…

After a fast day of school, Luke had a football game on Tuesday night. I walked 3 miles then drove to Rushville to tape the football game with Bryan. The boys came out a little flat initially, having no full practice since the last game to prepare for this opponent. It was their 3rd game in 7 days, which has been really hard on the boys. However, by the end of the 1st quarter they had sorted things out and were quickly up – scoring 3 TDs in the final 2 minutes of the quarter. They kept it up and were up by 28 at halftime. About midway through the 3rd quarter, we went up 44-0 and Coach Harris finally called off the dogs and got all the other boys some playing time throughout the 4th quarter. The game ended with no further scoring as the Pirates got the shutout! Luke continues to be a quad captain on the team and played fullback, outside linebacker, kickoff return up-back and kicker. Luke’s stats: Offensively, he had 5 rushes for 82 yards (a PB – personal best, I believe). He scored 14 points (another PB) on 3 plays – 2 (PAT run), 6 (44-yard run) and 6 (32-yard run). He also had a sweet pancake! On the other side of the ball, he recorded 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 hurry and had 1 tipped ball. On special teams, he had 7 kickoffs (40, 50, 40, 35, 35, 45, 35 – respectively). I believe the 50 yarder was also a PB. Their record stands at 3-2 on the season. Meanwhile Ann went to see Abby play soccer back at home. Also in attendance were Gma & Gigi – their first time on the Pirate Pitch. I think they might be good luck! Abby and the varsity Lady Pirates faced off against South Ripley. Bu had 3 shots on goal (or is it shits on goal, Ann?? 😊). She started at midfield and played nearly the entire game. With all the injuries, all the girls are getting significant playing time right now. The girls had a few “firsts” for the season that night – first win, first goal (4 of them!!) and first shutout! They won 4-0 to raise their record to 1-6 on the year! Congrats, ladies! That night, Ann packed for her work retreat while I uploaded the football video to Hudl and talked to Coach Harris for a while.

The kids had routine days at school. Luke had the night off from football while Abs went to soccer practice. Mom & Sandy headed to New York for the weekend to visit Keith, Rosie & Megan. Bu had a pair of dance classes at DDS that night. Justin & I took Dennis out for his goodbye meal at Joe Willy’s Burger Bar then walked 4 ½ miles to work off all the calories after work! In the afternoon, I packed up Ann & her girls’ stuff in their big 15-passenger van then said goodbye to them as they drove to FLA for a long weekend retreat in Rosemary Beach. Luke had an ice bath that night, per his coach’s request. He said it really helped to rejuvenate his legs. Abs went to Trevin’s house to help him with his math homework. Our coaches meeting was again cancelled so I ended up editing pictures and did Luke’s stats from last night’s game while napping and watching TV. Abby stayed up way too late (early?) to do her homework as she continued to burn the candle at both ends. I forgot to watch as Purdue played in the gold medal round of the World University Games in Taipei vs. Lithuania at like 1:30 in the middle of the night. They came up a little short, 74-85, but represented Team USA very well and brought home a silver. I can’t wait to see them play this year; I hope they can stay healthy…just think what they could’ve done if they still had Swanigan (who isn’t ready for the NBA, but who can blame him for chasing the $$)! It cooled down a little and was really breezy that evening, so we were able to open the house up.

Abby was right back up, bright and early, on Thursday morning. She was out the door for Pirateers practice before Luke & I even got up! Ann and her girls made it safely to FLA, where it was sunny and 80. Luke was back on the football field after school. Abby traveled to her soccer game in Madison with the varsity Lady Pirates team. I had a long day at work, doing my monthly rounds. I managed to squeak in a mile and a half of walking before heading south to join Abby. Unfortunately, Highway 7 was closed south of Vernon and it sent me on a 20-minute detour down Hwy 3 that put me way behind on my commute. Once I got to the school, I had a hell of a time finding the varsity field. In all our years, we’ve never been to Madison for soccer, I guess. When I finally found it, I had to park and walk about a half mile to the field. I got there a little late and when I finally got sat down and set up to take video and pictures from the game, my phone starts blowing up. Ann calls me and says that Luke’s new iPhone had been stolen at school today. So instead of relaxing and focusing my time on Abs, I ended up calling Luke to troubleshoot and try to unlock his account so we could track his phone. We were unsuccessful with that venture so I had no alternative but to call Verizon and deactivate the phone. At least the little shit that stole it won’t be able to use it. Later that night we called Apple to try something else but they couldn’t help either. Meanwhile, Abby and the girls were re-energized from their victory and came out hustling and fighting for the ball. They were in the game all the way to the end but came up short again and lost 0-4 to bring their record now to 1-7 on the year. Bu wasn’t feeling well again (I don’t think she gets enough sleep nor eats right). I signed her out after the game so we could go next door to Harry’s Stone Grill for dinner. It had very good food and the service was excellent. She felt much better after eating and slept the whole ride home…

It rained all day on Friday, remnants of Harvey. Luke’s football practice was interrupted as well as it was too cold and wet for them to practice, so they moved indoors. I went in to school with Luke to talk with the principal and security officer. They said they would review tapes and do some interviews, but it was a long shot. We questioned why he didn’t use the locker they offer and he said he would be using it from now on. Abby’s soccer practice was also cancelled. I loved the weather as it was around 60 all day. Matt stayed up at U Indy for the weekend to focus on his studies. Ann and the girls enjoyed another beautiful day in paradise at the docs’ condo. I ran to Verizon to have one of our old phones activated for Luke. That afternoon, I had a doctor appointment that allowed me to leave work early for the long weekend. It was an overall good checkup, but my bloodwork needs some help. The smoking cessation and exercise routine has helped immensely…however the diet is the problem (no shit?!). So, on top of me actually trying a little harder to manage my intake, we are also going to do some med changes to help the process. He also wants me to have a follow-up with the cardiologist since I haven’t been in for a year or so. Afterwards, I celebrated the successful physical by taking the kids out for dinner at ElRep. After one of their huge margaritas, I was good to go…thanks to Bu for driving home that night! We settled in and watched a couple movies on the big screen where we all ended up falling asleep a couple times. It was a very relaxing way to cap the work week. Later, Trevin joined us for movies and ended up falling asleep and staying the night. Here are random pictures from our adventures over the past week…

We enjoyed sleeping in on Saturday morning. It rained all night and into the morning. I texted Rob a couple times as we talked about it being the 5th anniversary of Mom’s death. I told him that it felt more like 25 years since I had last talked to her. I sometimes need to play the two last voicemails she left me before her passing just to hear her voice again. Luke & I finally had a chance to get back to our normal weekend routine, but it had to wait until after noon when we could get out to mow, grab lunch at the Bell and then go driving out at North Decatur. I gave him the choice of vehicles today and he chose the Barney Mobile. We had to cut it short as I ran him out to the YMCA where he played basketball and met up with Ms. Jenna. After the Y closed, they ended up going out to the movie theater where they saw a pair of movies and didn’t get home until late. Abby worked open to close at Wings & Rings then went to Trevin’s house until late. Ann had a good day in FLA where at least one of the girls may have had a drunk-out. I did a little HW hunting then got back to editing pictures and videos. We had over 1K pix again this week! I got to watch some racing (the Xfinity race had throwback schemes – including one of Jeff’s Rainbow Warrior scheme!) and pro and college football in peace, including the Boilermakers’ opener vs. #16 Louisville (they have the 2016 Heisman-winning QB). The game was held in Indy at Lucas Oil Stadium. That QB is something special to watch…but Purdue hung with them. There were just too many BS calls by the refs, including an ejection of a key defensive player and numerous other questionable calls that contributed to them coming up a little short. The Boilers have a new coach this year and I thought they looked great, personally. I also found time to finally log in my latest Hot Wheels and update my online collection data base. Luke & I were hoping to travel to Columbus that night to go so see Blue Oyster Cult, who were putting on a free concert in the park! But he ended up getting back way too late from the movies for us to make it. That is one band that I’ve always wanted to see and is one of my favorite bands. I have 8 of their albums on my phone’s playlist. I’m sure it would’ve been a good show. Perhaps next time… We have a few social media pictures to share this week.

We got to sleep in again on Sunday morning. We eventually got up and did our weekly household chores while watching more football and racing. The Indy cars were at Watkins Glen – one of my favorite tracks. The trucks were on the Canadian road course and that evening was the Southern 500 in Darlington. It was especially cool because they did a throwback weekend. It was fun to see some of the old, familiar paint schemes from years past. Abby worked the 1st shift at BWR and went to a team dinner with her soccer teammates out at the Lowe’s house until late. Luke & I ran a few errands and he drove Betty White around the neighborhood for a while. We came home and ordered pizza and ended up closing the house back up and turning on the air due to the humidity and temps rising. Ann texted us and told us she was sad that they were already on their way home. I always think that moment is so bittersweet. It’s so hard to leave such a beautiful location…but it’s always nice to come home too. I had to dig up that tribute that Sandy made for me in the weeks following Mom’s death, back in 2012 and watch it a couple times tonight. I ended up posting it down in the video section, if interested. It is so sweet and includes those two voicemails I alluded to earlier. It’s so good to hear her voice again. Thank you so much, Gigi… As I sit here alone, watching the Southern 500 and reflecting on things as I write this blog entry tonight, I am reminded of what this holiday weekend used to be. It used to have some significance in my life. It has historically marked the end of summer. It was this weekend when we would have our last party, here at our house, before we closed the pool for the season. It was the last weekend the park pool was open when I was a kid. We used to play baseball tourneys on this weekend in years past and now we’ve already had 6 football games and will only play one in October! It was the time of year when we used to return to school and now the first midterms are almost upon us. It was the weekend when we stayed up late and watched the Jerry Lewis telethon, but now he’s also passed away. It was our last hurrah of the carefree summer and the last “nice” weekend to spend with family and friends before we headed in to fall and the colder weather that always followed. Now that I’m older, those things no longer have a place in my life. I miss those days and long for those weekends of days gone by…we need to figure out a new tradition for this weekend to get that feeling back again, because right now it’s just another three-day weekend.

Next up is our Waybac section which continues to include our 3rd round of photo album pictures of our young family around the turn of the century. We lead off this week with several of Mom & Dad O in their freshman yearbook from 1953; next we head to July 2001 for 4th of July fun in our backyard as well as out at the YMCA, playing t-ball; then we head up to LaPorte to visit Mom & Dad Stoewer in August 2001; a pic of us at Pine Lake, probably that same weekend; Christmas Eve & Day at our house in December 2001; Matt at Washington Field for soccer camp in August 2002; Matt’s 1st day of school in September 2002; and Abby with Ann & I at Washington Field, watching Matt play soccer.

And finally, we wrap with our video segment, which includes nine new family movies this week as well as that tribute to Mom and several from around the internet.

And that does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya Mom. Hard to believe it’s been five years already…
Later, Scheu

I have been thinking of you this weekend, Tommy. I had a flashback on Facebook that his was the weekend your mom and my dear friend left us. I had a few tears for her. We had such fun when we were sisters-in-law. I am so thankful we got to visit when we were inn Florida. She was diagnosed a short time later. Hugs and love to you and your family. She left a big hole in your heart, I am sure.
