Changes Come around real Soon…

Although it was a slower week, it was still an eventful one. Construction is everywhere around town this summer. Washington Soccer Field (where we spent so much of our young family’s time through the years) is now gone. All three of our kids played at that complex. I’m not sure where they’ll re-build, if at all? Lincoln Street continues to be closed, which really puts a hurting on traffic…and that’s gonna make things really congested next week, when school starts backup. The new CVS is open and the old building is now gone. The old Blockbuster Video building (next to Pizza King) is now gone. Not sure what is going in there. Luke focused in on football while enjoying his final week of summer break. Abby worked full time and split her time between being a hostess, working in the kitchen and serving, saving up her money for the next month before she heads off to school in Franklin. Matt worked his final few days at Aspen Place and they were sad to see him go. He will try to come back and work once a month, but who knows how this next year will play out for him. He moved out of the house for his final year of college. Ann did lots of prep work, getting the kids ready for school. I lost another pound this week and met my goal of 15 miles of walking. It’s funny how the family just doesn’t feel whole when Matt’s gone to school. I can’t imagine how it will be when Abby leaves, here in a few weeks. The dogs are going to be lost without them…and we may be as well for a while… Hello again and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.

It was back to work on Monday morning. Luke & I were up early to run him to football practice at the Fieldhouse. Matt was gone to work by the time I got back to the house. Abby went in to work later that morning as well. Ann & I enjoyed fast days at work and then I walked a 5K on a warm afternoon. Luke had football practice that night due to North Decatur pulling out of the scheduled scrimmage that evening. Luke & I stopped for BP for Chester’s chicken on the way home for dinner then Luke ran around the neighborhood with his buddies until late. Here are pictures from Luke’s scrimmage vs. Connersville last week.

On Tuesday, Ann & I went out to leave for work and poor old Black Betty wouldn’t start. She wouldn’t even engage the starter. Something broke in the ignition box, I think. So, we slummed it by taking Barney to work. I walked a 5K on another hot afternoon after a fast day at work. Matt worked again at Aspen Place while Abby enjoyed a rare day off from work. She went to Columbus with Kuyhlia. Matt napped after work then went for a long run until the early evening. We had to have Black Betty towed to Jerry’s garage at Exhaust Systems Plus to have the ignition module replaced. Ann cooked Mexican chicken casserole for dinner that really hit the spot! I went out early to watch Luke’s practice but they had ended by the time I got there. Well, come to find out, a new player had passed out that evening during drills. By the time they got all that cleaned up, they decided to just call practice. We hope he’s OK…

Matt was up early and out the door for work again on Wednesday morning. Abby went in early too and worked first shift. Luke enjoyed having the day off. Ann & I both had long days at work then I walked a 5K on a noticeably hotter evening. There was no word from Jerry yet on Black Betty’s status and we enjoyed a warm ride home. The kids ran to the store for us while Ann ordered Papa John’s pizzas for dinner. Afterward, Ann made several pitchers of frozen strawberry margaritas while we played euchre with the kids as we celebrated National Tequila day (a day late). Luke ran around with his buddies in the neighborhood then spent the night at Brayden’s house. We played three games of euchre and this night belonged to the girls as they beat Matt & I, two games to one, to capture bragging rights for the summer. Here are pictures from Sandy’s birthday party last weekend.

Thursday was Sandy’s birthday. Luke’s final AM football practice was cancelled, so two-a-days are now officially over for the year…for which he is thankful! Matt’s final day at Aspen Place was bittersweet – they had a little pizza party for him, as both the employees and residents love that kid! Ann & I rode in to work in Barney again. I talked to Jerry while I was walking after work on a warm afternoon. It was indeed the ignition that had broken. He found us a replacement as well as tacked up the heat shield which had fallen off the bottom of the car again. I got in about three miles after a late start. It was another fast day at work as I crammed five days’ worth of work into four days. I don’t believe I ate lunch at work this week. Abby talked to Dad & Barb today, who are doing good. They got Abby all setup for a new laptop and books for the semester. Afterward she went in to work. She was a little panicked as her car did that high-idle thing again. However, she was quite proud of herself as she got it fixed on her own (thanks again, Jerry!). Luke came home from Brayden’s house then Matt ran him out to football practice. Unfortunately, they were rained-out due to the storm that blew through that evening. When Ann & I pulled in to the house, Matt was in the process of getting his car all packed up with all his stuff. That night, he went to eat at Gigi’s Gourmet and enjoy some special Memaw and Gigi time for a few hours. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

We were up early on Friday morning for Matt’s Move-In Day. It was an inevitable end to the summer, but we were still not ready for the day to come. Matt left a couple hours ahead of us -up to his apartment on the campus of U-Indy to begin cleaning. Ms. Taylor met him there and Ann, the kids & I joined them a few hours later. We got Matt all packed up, got the place cleaned-up and got him checked-out of Greyhound Village. He is now officially an off-campus student. We loaded up the cars and stopped for lunch at El Jalapeno, just off-campus. After a nice lunch we headed on up to Zionsville where Katie & Jake have been kind enough to put him up for his fifth and final year of college. He will be teaching in the Zionsville school system this coming year, so it will be a short commute from their home. We got him moved-in and visited for a few hours before saying our good-byes and heading back home. It may have been a tearful one. ? With I-65 being closed downtown, 465 was a mess…and when Google Maps re-routed us, it added about 20 minutes to our route as we spent much of our time stopped and idling in traffic. When we finally made it home and got the car unloaded with all of Matt’s stuff he didn’t need a couple hours later, we didn’t have time to catch our breath. Instead, while Ann ran to the grocery store to get goodies to make corn dip, Abby & I returned the Hot Rod Lincoln to Memaw (thanks for letting us borrow it today!!) then picked up Black Betty from Jerry’s shop. He did not disappoint again and was very reasonable with his rates. We are so thankful we made the switch and highly recommend using him. By the time we got back, Ann was pretty much done cooking her side dish and so we headed over to Christy & Jimmy’s house (they live in one of the neighborhoods behind us) for her birthday party. Trevin’s mom and dad were also there. Jimmy cooked burgers & dogs on the grill and we had several sides that were all delicious. We enjoyed some adult beverages until late that evening. We laughed and laughed for several hours. Abby joined us and spent the night hanging out with Julia and Regan. Luke stayed back, running around the neighborhood with his friends and did come join over for a little while as he brought over some big boomers that I’m sure kept the neighbors up. There was also a gaggle of girls that were also running around the neighborhoods that night that somehow ended up at our house for a while. When we finally got home, Luke was rearranging his room – man, what a mess! We collapsed and fell asleep in the living room only a few minutes after sitting down, wiped-out from the long day. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

We slept in a little later than we intended for some reason on Saturday morning. When we finally got up to start our day, Luke & I loaded up Betty White with our yard equipment and went over to mow and trim at Mom & Sandy’s house. It wasn’t too bad outside, but we were still pretty sweaty. We came home and did the same for the first time in a couple weeks at our place, so it looked much better when we finished. After showering, we made a run to the border for lunch and Luke practiced driving the truck. We ended up at Walmart, as we do most days (how does that happen??). We came home and while he took a nap, I wrote-out bills and watched some sci-fi (Stargate and Ancient Aliens) before the girls got home. The girls had gone out shopping while we were mowing to get Abby all her college / dorm stuff she needs for her Move-In day at FC next month. By the time the girls got back home, Bu had to quickly change and head into work. She was so excited to work as a server that evening! Ann & Luke continued to nap and even I drifted out a couple times that evening, falling asleep early on the couch. Meanwhile, Matt & Taylor joined Katie, Jake and the kids up at their lake house on Lake Manitou in the small town of Rochester in northern Indiana. It sits about an hour south of LaPorte in rural Fulton County. I am hoping to have several pictures from their fun day to share next week.

We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday morning. It was weird with Matt out of the house. It seems much quieter and it definitely feels like something’s missing. I ended up getting up a couple hours earlier than I wanted after I had fallen asleep so early last night and couldn’t sleep any longer. We eventually got around to doing our weekly household chores. Abby had to work a double shift at BWR today. Ann slept most of the morning then went grocery shopping for hours at Walmart. I enjoyed watching my normal shows (sci-fi and racing) while writing out this blog entry. After sleeping into the early afternoon, Luke spent the day and early evening cleaning his room. That night, Ann made tacos for dinner and we relaxed with the dogs in the A/C, watching a few of our favorite summer shows – Sharp Objects (I love how they always play Led Zeppelin songs in the episodes!), Shades of Blue (final season) and Preacher (maybe the most bizarre show on TV right now). It was a relaxing way to wrap up the week as we prepare to turn around and do it all over again tomorrow…

Next up is our Waybac segment which features more of book 16 of our 18 family photo albums. We lead off this week in December 2002 at Vird & Belinda’s house in Indy for the Bryan family Christmas…I don’t think Katie can do this to Matt these days, LOL; next we move on to 2003 – Monster Jam in Indy in January; wresting practice in Fieldhouse in February; Matt’s birthday at our house in March; Chris & Trish’s wedding in Lafayette in June; Luke’s first couple days in June; Matt’s soccer game in June; our annual 4th of July party; Abby’s birthday in September; Danny’s 50th birthday in November; Matt’s first football team at the Y in November; the Scheu family Christmas at John & June’s house in Lafayette in December; and the kids posing for a Christmas card in front of the tree in December.
