It’s a Revelation…Celebration…Graduation!

We have had by far the busiest week we’ve had this year. Matt worked in Zionsville, substitute teaching. He graduated college at U Indy and then moved into his first apartment! We got to see Abby a couple times this week and is doing well as she continues to move ever-closer to Finals Week and completion of her first year of college at Franklin. Luke attended football and baseball practices as well as three baseball games. Ann continued to work on rehabbing her knees in physical therapy and had a big doctor appointment. I logged only six and a half miles and didn’t do well with my diet as I held on tight for the wild ride this week. We did get to spend time with Dad & Lynn and Mom & Sandy, which is always good for the soul. Overall, it was one of those milestone moments that will give us many memories that we’ll treasure for a lifetime. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.

It was back to work and school on Monday morning. Matt returned to teaching in Zionsville, where he is now employed. Abby resumed her classes at Franklin. Luke went to school and then baseball. Ann & I had fast days. It was my first day of monthly EOC rounds, which kept me busy. Justin & Vic took me out to lunch at China Buffet. I didn’t have time to exercise that day as we left early for Luke’s baseball game. That evening, the JV Pirates faced Brookville. Luke started in left field, making one error as he missed a line drive that was hit right at him. He one-handed the catch with that teeny tiny glove that he is using from Grayson and it popped right out – he has to start using one of his own gloves. At-bat, he went 1-3 with a double and a walk. His double nearly cleared the fence as he one-hopped the fence in left. He probably should’ve had a triple but he didn’t run his hardest the whole time because he thought he’d hit it out and was admiring his work…rookie mistake. He also scored a run, struck out and popped-up. The boys were tied, 2-2, going into the final frame but gavee up eight runs in the top of the seventh and could only muster one point on Oakley’s homerun, losing 3-10. Here are pictures from Luke’s baseball game last week at Madison.

Tuesday was warm but overcast and a little rainy. Ann & I had fast days again as I completed my second day of EOC rounds at work. We left early for Ann’s physical therapy appointment. I took advantage of the time to walk nearly 5K at the cemetery. We came home so Ann could ice her knees and I ran to the store. I got back just in time to load the van and head to baseball again. Luke had school then went on to his next game. This was the make-up game vs. Batesville. Although it was an away game, we played it on our field as the visitors. Luke did not start nor play for whatever reason this game. The boys got down early but then fought back. However, they still ended up losing 3-8. Their record now stands at 7-6. Luke went out with his friends to El Chile Poblano for dinner after the game.

Wednesday was May Day. Luke went to school then on to baseball practice. Ann & I took the day off as we ran her up to her annual cancer checkup in Indy. It went very, very well. We are still waiting on the final word from her bloodwork, but early indications are also thankfully good. We met up with Matt & Taylor for lunch at Cheddar’s then went to his SOE (School of Education) ceremonies. First, he was recognized with his graduating classmates, where he gave a short speech. Abby joined us for that then we moved to another part of the building for pictures and food & drinks, where we met up with Gma & Gigi. Finally, we moved to another room for U Indy’s annual SOE Recognition Ceremony. Matt was recognized twice – once for earning the award of Outstanding Future Educator: Special Education (WOW!) and then as one of their graduating seniors. Afterward we got a few more pictures then said goodbye to Mom & Sandy as well as Abby. Matt & I got most of his stuff moved out of Taylor’s dorm in the pouring rain and said goodbye to the kids and came on home. Luke & I got Matt’s stuff put away in the garage until he’s ready for it in the near future. Luke had a fast day at school then had baseball practice that afternoon. We got cleaned up and while Luke went to bed, Ann & I fell asleep watching TV. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

I was up early with the dogs on Thursday morning so I just stayed awake and waited for Ann to get ready while Luke slept in for a scheduled 2-hour delay from school. We drove Black Betty to work on a foggy morning. I dropped Ann off then picked her up again a couple hours later to take her to a meeting at the tech center. She called when she was ready to be picked up and go back to work. After a fast day, we left early to take her back to physical therapy again. I took advantage of the break to walk about three miles at the cemetery. She worked her butt off and was pretty sore afterward. We headed home a little early to load up Barney and head out for Brookville. On our way home, we got to about Hartsville and found out they had cancelled the game due to all the rain recently. It had rained overnight and off and on that morning but turned out to be a beautiful afternoon – even the sun eventually made it out that evening. It was too late to go back to work, so we came on home. I ran to the store to get supplies and Ann made taco salad for dinner. I took a nap while we watched several DVR’d shows. Luke had a fast day at school then went to baseball practice after the game was called. He came home and played Fortnight then studied for his big math test tomorrow before calling it a night. I had to force myself to go to bed so that I could get up at a decent time in the morning. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Friday was a long day…I was up early with the dogs while Ann slept in on her day off. Luke went to school then had baseball practice again. I headed into work and facilitated our annual fire alarm testing all day. Abby came down with her friend Toni to see me after her classes. She picked up some medicine I got from the pharmacy yesterday. We talked for a bit before they headed back up to campus to study. Justin took me out to lunch at Five Guys, which helped the day go very fast, but I didn’t have time to do any walking unfortunately. I ran a couple errands when I got back to town before coming home and mowing. Luke helped me then we loaded up Betty White and he drove us to Mom & Sandy’s house to mow there as well. We ran a Polar Pop out to Ann, who was at the Fieldhouse setting up for the annual After-Prom event with a couple dozen volunteers. She was there for most of the day. Luke ran us through the BK drive thru for a quick dinner then we cleaned the house for several hours that night. Afterwards, I paid the bills while Luke “finally” got to play some Fortnight (he almost died because he hadn’t played in a few hours). Ann finally got home, late that night and did not sit in her chair but went on to bed instead to ice her knees and collapse from her long day… Here are the recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

Saturday was May the Fourth Be with You and we were up early for Matt’s college graduation day! We were getting ready on that overcast morning when we unfortunately received a text from the school just as we were preparing to leave – today’s undergraduate commencement at U Indy had been moved to the inclement weather plan. That meant that we weren’t doing the celebration outdoors on the football field that morning and will move inside to the basketball gym later this afternoon. That really threw a wrench in our plans because it meant Dad & Barb, Garrett and Matt’s friends wouldn’t be able to attend. Dad & Lynn, who had driven into Indy last night, got to stay in their hotel up in Indy longer than expected and they took advantage of it by going back to sleep – as did Ms. Ann. Although we had to cancel our initial plans at Shallo’s for lunch, they were able to accommodate us for a later meal. On the upside, we no longer had to attend a ceremony with so many graduates, as they cut commencement in half and we attended a much shorter presentation. Mom & Sandy came over and we drove the Hot Rod Lincoln up to see Matt on his big day. As we were being shuttled to the basketball gym, we saw Abby trying to find a parking place (which was nearly impossible). So, I hopped off the shuttle and swapped her positions so she could go with Ann and I could go find a place to park Tonya before it started raining again. I caught up to the crew inside the gymnasium. Matt & Taylor got us set up nicely with accessible seating for the parents and Ann. Dad & Lynn met us inside. We had enough seats for most of us, but Luke, Abby and myself sat down lower. It was cool to get different angles of the event, so it was all good. Abby & Gigi got pictures while Luke & I shot video of Matt’s big day. He was having a bad hair day (Abby said his hair resembled a puzzle piece), but he took it in stride…except when he tried to cross the stage! He was moving a little fast, had his hat set too far back on his head and his hat blew off, just as he was about to receive his diploma! It was a funny moment but he played it off and made everyone smile…something he’s always been good at – making others around him smile. Ann & I are so proud of him and this moment brought a tear to both our eyes. He’s worked hard to earn this day and now he’s so close – he just needs to pass that darn Chemistry class next week to earn that elusive Bachelor of Science degree! We met up outside after the ceremony and got lots of priceless pictures with the fam. Ann pointed out that this is where we were on his first day of school – at the basketball gym with the weather cool, overcast and drizzly, so it was only fitting that it should be that way on his last day. Next we headed down to Greenwood and had a big meal with a couple cocktails with the ten of us. We enjoyed ourselves then came home. Dad & Lynn ended up staying at a hotel here in town, as they had booked it back in December when Rob & Sharon were planning to come as well. Unfortunately, they couldn’t be with us but I did get to talk to them last night for a while. Dad & Lynn came over for a little while then headed out to go sleep at the hotel. Abby dropped off a load of stuff, grabbed several suitcases and headed back to campus. Kristie picked up an already-weary Ann and they headed out to After-Prom for the night. Mom & Sandy dropped us off and ran over to the elementary school to watch prom walk-ins. They wanted to catch Gracie as she drove up in the Crossfire (hey, it’s tradition!) and walked in to the event. As it turned out, they got there only moments before she arrived so it was perfect! Matt, Taylor and Luke drove Barney out to the Fieldhouse to help Ann before the students arrived. I had planned to go over to Bryan’s house, but ended up falling asleep on the couch and went on to bed when the kids got back. I have no idea how long they were up, but I woke up when Ann came home about 4 am. She was completely exhausted and fell asleep within just a few minutes after hitting the bed.

We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday, which was Cinco de Mayo. I got up on a lazy morning and watched my classic sci-fi shows while Luke got in some Fortnight. Poor Ann got picked-up by Kristie again and they went back to the Fieldhouse to finish cleaning-up. Matt & Taylor slept late and had just gotten up when Dad & Lynn came back over. They received news that her grandson was having some issues at the house in Missouri, so they considered leaving early to go take care of stuff out there. Thankfully, they were able to stay. When Matt got out of the shower, he said he wanted me to help him move into his new apartment in Greenwood. So, I loaded up the stuff he had remaining here at the house as well as one of the dressers from his room in Barney and said good-bye to Dad & Lynn – who decided to head back to the hotel. We hung around until Ann got back to the house so she could say her good-byes to Matt before she went back to bed. Luke & I ran some lights back to Bryan’s house, gassed up Barney and drove it up to Greenwood – where Matt’s new place is located. We got him all moved in to the second floor and went bed shopping for his graduation present. It took us a couple hours of shopping, but we finally decided on a new bed, nightstand, mattress and box springs. Who knew the bed didn’t come with a damn mattress? We were a little upset that he had to wait a couple weeks to get all his stuff in so we’ll have to run back up there to pick it up and take it to his place – or pay for shipping. Afterward, we ran to Walmart real quick then went on to Margarita’s for dinner and drinks. We said good-bye and Luke drove us back home. We called Dad & Lynn, but they were done for the day, so hopefully we can spend some quality time with them tomorrow. Ann & I caught up on our days and then both fell asleep watching TV on the big screen…
