That’s Working in the Sun. You’re Hot…

We had a short work week as we enjoyed the unofficial first full week of summer. Luke had fun sleeping in, spending time with friends and being a two-sport athlete this week. Abby began working back at Wings & Rings through the week and had Garrett down to spend the weekend. Matt officially completed college this week and began working on getting a summer job. Ann continued physical therapy and struggled through another painful week. My diet was up and down, but the weight continued to come off despite falling short of my weekly exercise goal with eleven miles this week. It was great to spend time with all our kids this week and even got to see some of our good friends as well. We continue to receive above-normal rainfall amounts – even for an Indiana spring…but at least the temps make it feel like summer. Let’s hope it that stops long enough next week so we can actually play some baseball! Hello again and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.

We were off on Monday for Memorial Day. We are thankful for all those who have served and especially those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice. We enjoyed sleeping in on a slow day before we eventually got up and did our weekly household chores. There were some nasty storms in the state again, but thankfully they all stayed north. Just to be sure, we got in touch with Dad & Barb who said they were safe. We did as little as possible that day and really enjoyed the downtime. Abby got home from New Castle before dark and we watched some DVR’d shows in the living room with the dogs and took it easy. It was a nice way to wrap up a long weekend. Here are pictures of Abby at the Zac Brown Band concert at IMS on Legends Day last weekend.

It was back to work on Tuesday morning for Ann & I. Although I love long weekends, it’s a bitch getting back into work afterward because it always takes a half day just to get caught up! While Luke & Abby enjoyed sleeping in, it was Matt’s last day of teaching classes in Zionsville this year. That afternoon, Abs had her first day back to work. This will be her third summer out at Buffalo Wings & Rings. We had a professional photographer at work, taking pictures of the facility and our management team for our new website. That meant I had to wear dress clothes – yuck! As soon as I was able to, I changed back into my regular work duds. In the afternoon, I ran Ann to her next physical therapy appointment and walked three miles at the cemetery on a sweaty day near 90°. Later, I ran to Best Buy to have my new screen put on. Unbeknownst to me; I requested the wrong warranty part. This one isn’t glass, so I’m not real sure how well it will protect my screen. Thankfully, Zagg were very cool about the whole thing and have agreed to send me a correct one – free of charge! They just got a customer for life. Luke went to Blane’s house to go swimming then they went to football practice. Later, he went to Addison’s house to play basketball before he had his buddies over to hang out on the back porch until late that night. Oh, how I miss being a carefree teenager in the summertime… Here are pictures of the recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

Wednesday was another hot, humid and rainy day. It stormed on and off throughout the day. It was a fast one for Ann & I at work at least. Ann still had sore thighs from her physical therapy workout yesterday. I had a couple contractors in-house, working on life safety systems and ended up getting out a little late. Justin, Vic & I went out for lunch at Chicago’s Pizza. I managed to walk a 5K in between raindrops on a muggy afternoon before picking up Ann and coming on home. Luke enjoyed sleeping in well past noon that day. His Cubs team was slated to face off with the Reds that evening on diamond one but the game was cancelled due to all the rain earlier that day. Luke ran around with his buddies for a while then met up with us, back at the house. Matt met with a lady from his school to process the year and put closure on his tenure as a student teacher…and just like that – he was officially finished with school! He swung in and picked up his diploma at U Indy and came down to see us and hangout for several hours. We all went out to BWR for drinks and dinner to celebrate his achievement. We enjoyed a “tube” of beer and are a ton of chicken and bleu cheese – yum! He came back to the house afterwards and we sat and talked for an hour or so. It was the most relaxed I’d seen him in some time. He looked older and so mature. Unfortunately, he had to leave and head back to Greenwood. He honked all the way out of the neighborhood as he always does and brought a smile to our faces as he always does… He said that he is trying to get transferred from the old folks’ home, here in town to one of their sister facilities near where he lives. That would be pretty sweet to have some sort of income before he starts up fulltime in the fall in Zionsville. Once Matt left, Abby did some laundry and went back to her room for the night. Luke went to Addison’s house before he and his buddies came back and played PS4 until late. Here are pictures of Luke’s baseball game last week vs. Franklin County Firestone.

Thursday was another long day of work for Ann & I work. I was on my feet the whole time for my first day of EOC rounds at the facility before walking three miles around the airport property in the searing heat. Abby worked a double shift at BWR but came home a little earlier that we anticipated due to being slow. Luke slept in then had football practice that afternoon. Ann ordered pizzas for the us and got a couple extras for Luke, as he planned to have a couple of his buddies over to stay the night that evening. He ended up going out with his friends after practice and didn’t get home until late. Oakley and Brayden came over but only Oak ended up staying the night with us. Here are pictures of Matt’s trip to Chicago last weekend.

On Friday morning, Ann & I headed into work while the kids all slept in. It was my 2nd day of EOC rounds and we had some issues which ensured I got my steps in that day. The morning sped by quickly and before I knew it, I was headed out to lunch with Justin, Vic, Michelle & Tena. We tried to go to Arni’s but it was packed so we ending up at Five Guys. We were nearly done with our meal when Justin got a phone call from work saying the fire alarm was going off! So, he & I took off right away and left the others to finish their lunch. On the way, our monitoring company called me, followed by our CEO, who gave me details about the incident. By the time we got back, our staff was in full clean-up mode and already had a good handle on it. That allowed me to focus on working with the fire department, getting the building re-secured and the fire panel cleared. I coordinated the repair with Justin, Vic and our vendor. Vic quickly got us all patched up and we got back online and running. The clean-up went really well and within two hours, you couldn’t tell we even had an issue. I just can’t say enough about how great our team is at responding in an emergency situation. It was a good call that I had to make to corporate later, to report the incident. We’re still not sure how the sprinkler head went off, but the staff reacted quickly and contained the water without incurring any loss. Once we got it all buttoned-up, I headed out to get Ann and head back home. She had stayed late, thankfully, to throw a bridal shower for one of her employees. Luke had Alex over for a while that day to work out…but they couldn’t get past the planning stage and instead ate leftover pizza and played video games. Abby worked 2nd shift at BWR. She said it was pretty dead again. Luke had Oakley over and I later ran them out to baseball practice at the park. He said they played on diamond 2 and hit about ten balls over the fence (“dingers”)! Thanks to Mitch for bringing them home. I ended up mowing the yard and then Ann & I went out to the Sunken Boat Bar for some grilling ‘n chilling! Bryan cooked hot wings on the grill that were topped with bacon, cheese & hot sauce – yum! Between those and the brats, we were stuffed! Shawn joined us for dinner and afterward we moved out to the fire pit, by the dock, for the night. Bob & Pam joined us out there and later Rob & Mary came out as well as we all enjoyed a few cocktails and a bunch of laughs. Ann had a balance issue, slipping on the dewy grass after the sun went down. Thankfully, she landed on her bum and not her knees. She was ok but was a little sore when she got home. After practice, Luke had Oakley and Grayson over to spend the night. Ann ordered pizzas for the boys and we got to watch and listen on the Ring doorbell, which was pretty cool. Those crazy boys ended up staying awake all night… Here are random pictures of our recent adventures.

The boys were loud, early on Saturday morning as they took the dogs for walks, played video games, ran through the house and even played baseball at dawn in the backyard. After Oak & Gray went home, Luke played Fortnight and we thought he would fall asleep. I got up with the dogs, who were out of their element with the boys being up with all the lights on and everything. So, I got up and let them out and stayed up to load the dishwasher, pickup the family room and write-out bills (I hate bills). Ann got up and took a nap in her chair, still sore from her slip last night. When Bu got up, we ran a few errands around town – we paid the mortgage, got the oil changed in the Pacifica and picked-up graduation cards at Walmart. When we finally got back to the house (the town was so busy with it being Graduation Day and the streets were fuller than I had seen in some time), we hurriedly got cleaned-up, dressed and headed over to Mary’s grad party where we had mimosas with brunch! It was held at Aaron’s church, which was nice. We are definitely considering holding Luke’s there in a few years. The food was absolutely delicious. We visited for a while and closed that party down before we headed out into the country to Grace’s grad party. It was held out at the Buchanan’s party barn, near Dee & Chad’s old house. We enjoyed a good meat & cheese tray from Troyer’s and just a smidge of cake. Mom & Sandy were out there with the Verseman girls, Chad & Mary were there with David & Donna and there were still a couple dozen other family and friends still there when we finally arrived. We visited for a while then headed back to town so I could load Betty White with the yard tools. Luke drove us to Mom & Sandy’s to mow & trim then he took us to Square Deals for some HW hunting, ran us out to Walmart and then took us through the Taco Bell drive thru and then on home. He did great and needs to get in his Drivers Ed lessons so he can get his license, here in a couple months. When we finally made it back home, we took it easy and ate our dinner. Luke – rather than go to bed (now going on 36 hours of awake time) – went to Brayden’s house to play basketball with Addison and ended up staying the night. Garrett was at the house when we got back and Abby and he went out to dinner at Wings & Rings. They came home later and we woke-up Ann so she could make her Moscow Mules and we could go enjoy some porch time. It was a perfect evening and we talked and laughed for a little while before turning in early, worn-out from our busy day. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

We enjoyed sleeping-in on Sunday morning. We slowly got up and got to our weekly household chores. Abby & Garrett got up and went to the store to buy supplies for Ann to make breakfast. She made berry-filled and chocolate chip pancakes with thick-cut bacon – yum! We turned the air on and enjoyed some down time on a quiet afternoon. While Ann & Abby took naps, Luke came home, showered and played Fortnight while I binge-watched several episodes of the second season of Jessica Jones. After nap time, Ann made a big dinner for the kids and us. She prepped pork chops while I fired up the grill. She baked some cheesy broccoli and potato wedges and I grilled the chops, pineapple and onions & peppers (with close supervision by the grill master, of course!). We sat out on the new patio furniture and enjoyed a cold brew on a beautiful late afternoon while we grilled. The food really hit the spot as we all sat down for a big meal at the dinner table. I watched the IndyCar and NASCAR races on the big screen and then ended the week by watching the season premiere of Fear the Walking Dead and a new show called NOS4A2 before heading on to bed so I could get up early tomorrow. Abby had Megan over for a while before they went out on the town. It was the perfect way to wind down another great week.

Next up is our Waybac section which has yet more fun pix from our family photo album #17, which features our Walt Disney World vacation in June 2004. We lead off this week in Fantasyland of the Magic Kingdom at Cinderella’s Castle for the character breakfast entitled Cinderella’s Royal Table; next we head to Animal Kingdom for a show called The Feast of the Lion King, where Abby got to participate in the show (!); then we head over to MGM Studios for a parade called Stars and Motorcars; and finally, we head back to Animal Kingdom for Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade.

And last but not least, we have our video segment with features one new family home movie this week as well as a ton from around the internet.

And that puts the kibosh on yet another episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
