The Coach Stands, waiting just Outside

We enjoyed a beautiful week of weather, here in southcentral Indiana. Most days started in the low sixties and rose into the high eighties. The humidity took a vacation from us this week, which was equally enjoyable. Matt continued to study for his teaching license exams, started setting up his classroom, attended school trainings and took on even more responsibility by accepting a coaching position. Abby continued to work fulltime at Wings & Rings, though she seriously contemplated her future there – just weeks ahead of her returning to school. Luke was again a two-sport athlete as he not only played and practiced football but also had a baseball game. He enjoyed his final full week of summer vacation and will return to classes next week – what a fast summer! Ann continues to make small steps of progress with her bilateral knee surgery recovery. She enjoyed time with friends and family and we even caught her getting around the house without her cane several times. I lost another half dozen pounds and surpassed my walking goal with seventeen miles this week. I enjoyed filming Luke’s games, spending time with all the kids and spending the weekend with Rob & Sharon, who returned for round two before they move on to the next job site. And we had fun celebrating with Gigi, who survived another trip around the sun this week. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.

Monday led the week of win rain and a noticeably cooler day. It was a sign of things to come over the next few days. It was back to work for Ann & I while Luke slept-in with the dogs. Abs drove back from Garrett’s house and safely made it home. Ann & I both had long days at work. She had a busy day as they deal with the hospital moving over to a new computer system. I spent most of the morning catching up from the 4-day weekend and then finished up my quarterly reports. I walked a 5K in the rain that afternoon. Thankfully it was a light rain by the time I was out on the airport property. Funny thing is that it didn’t even rain at Ann’s office, which is only about a mile away. Ann & I picked-up Bu at home and took her out to eat dinner at Wings & Rings. Luke went to football practice where he learned he was going to try a new position on offense in order to get a chance to play some varsity reps this year. Apparently he is moving from his fullback position to a new position called a sniffer back, which will primarily be a blocking position in the spread offense with an occasional pass option in that scheme. He was very excited and optimistic, so we’re happy for him. He got cleaned-up and had Drayden over to play PS4 and spend the night that evening. Ann & I watched was is likely the series finale of Big Little Lies – it was a good little show, if you’ve never seen it. Here are pictures from Luke’s football scrimmage last week when they hosted both Connersville and Greenfield Central.

Our Tuesday had a gorgeous start to the day in the low 60s. I would take this type of weather year-round, if anyone knows where I can find it! Thankfully, it was a fast day at work for both Ann & I – mostly because it was so busy. Justin, Vic & I went to China Buffet for lunch then I picked-up Ann and we got our haircuts with Ms. Jami. That afternoon, Justin & I walked a 5K on a perfect afternoon. We left town a little early to swing by home and pickup Abby before heading out to the high school. Abby had the day off to work on cleaning her room, which looks as good as ever has! Luke hung out with Dray all day then Blane took them to football practice. We met up with the other parents to watch the Pirates host a scrimmage against North Decatur on our practice field. Luke played only varsity that evening. He played 2nd string sniffer back on the offense, getting like 3-5 snaps, I think. I almost wish he had played JV so that he could’ve run the ball. On defense, he started at outside linebacker and looked like he belonged. He didn’t look out of place, confused or like a boy playing with men. He recorded at least two solo tackles and I know he was in on a bunch more. He didn’t embarrass himself, which was the biggest thing for me and should really work to improve his confidence. Ann & I came back and chilled-out while the kids went out to Walmart and Taco Bell. We spoke with Matt that day and were excited to hear that he had been offered and accepted the position of head wrestling coach at his school, Zionsville West! Way to go, buddy!! 😊 How cool is that!?! Here are lots of pictures from Abby’s caving excursion last weekend.

We welcomed another cool morning in the 50s on Wednesday. Ann & I drove back in to work in Black Betty who turned 320K miles. Justin, Vic & I went out to lunch at Steak & Shake then I ran Ann to a meeting. Later, Justin & I walked a 5K on a sweaty afternoon. Abby returned to work at BWR that evening. Luke returned to the baseball diamond for some action out at the complex that evening. The Cubs faced the Red Sox in the second game of the year-end tourney. The boys began the game down two key players and wound up walking in 7 runs in the 2nd inning to go down 1-8 before one of them came late to the game. We managed to tie the game at eight-all in the top of the 5th inning as time expired when Luke hit a 2-run double to center. After stealing third base with only one out, he ended up getting stranded, which would come back to haunt us. The pitching and defense game up a run in the bottom of that final inning and we lost 8-9. They will play in a must-win game next Wednesday to get to advance to the championship game on Friday night. Luke started at first base and played there the whole game, recording two assisted putouts in his only attempts with no errors. At the plate, he was a perfect 3-3 with a pair singles and a double. Batting clean-up in the order, he also recorded 4 RBIs, 5 stolen bases but only scored once, being stranded at third twice. We came home and ordered Papa John pizzas for dinner as we watched Thor Ragnarök on the big screen. Here are the recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

We enjoyed another gorgeous start to the day on Thursday. Both Ann & I enjoyed yet another fast day at work as her computer tickets have finally settled down from the big conversion. I walked another 5K after work on a hot day. Abby worked at BWR then ran around with Molie that evening. Luke had a lazy day then went on to football practice that evening with Blane. Ann worked on finding photos from the external hard drives to take with her this weekend while she is scrapbooking in Burney with Shawna. She got them uploaded to the Walmart website, but for some reason the Greensburg store was unavailable so we’ll have to get them from Columbus at some point tomorrow. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

Friday was Gigi’s 62nd birthday. I had the day off due to low census so I took Ann to work and then came on home to write-out bills. After I finished that, I trimmed and mowed the yard while Luke & Abby slept in. I no sooner finished in the yard before I headed over to Columbus where I went shopping at Walmart to pick up Ann’s pictures she printed-off last night and some other supplies for the weekend then picked up Ann and headed home. We stopped at Mary’s house and picked up Shawna’s bday cake on the way. Meanwhile, Luke loaded-up the pickup and had it ready to go when we got home so we could quickly get over to Mom & Sandy’s house to mow & trim. We got back and got cleaned-up just before Rob & Sharon come down from Lafayette for the weekend. Luke had Grayson over to spend the night. I ran Ann out to Burney for scrapbooking that evening then picked up Rob, Sharon & the boys and went to dinner at ElRep. We ate like kings and enjoyed a pitcher of their potent margaritas. Luke did a good job of driving us home where we played several games of Yahtzee. The boys ended up joining us as did Abby when she got home from work. Later, Bu & I played Rob & Sharon in an epic game of euchre that lasted nearly an hour and ended 10-09 with Rob winning with a little queen of clubs off-suit! Dammit! After Abby went on to bed, we sat out on the patio until almost dawn, talking and laughing… We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

The girls were up early and went to get pastries from Wildflower Artisan Bakery in St Paul that were just out of this world. If you’ve never had them, you owe it to yourself to try them once…but beware; they’re like crack – you can’t just get one! After getting their goodies, Abs dropped Ann off at the Burney church for day 2 of scrapbooking and came home to get ready for work. Grayson went home and Abby went back into work at Wings & Rings while the rest of us enjoyed sleeping in until about noon! We put some new music on Rob’s phone from my collection then Luke drove us out to lunch at BWR to see Abby. We enjoyed a yummy lunch of wings, celery and that wonderful bleu cheese of theirs! Next, Luke drove us out to Walmart to get our supplies for dinner that night. On our way home, Ann called and said she was ready to be picked up, so I dropped off the crew and drove out to Burney to get her from the church where they were scrapbooking. She said they had a great time, surprising Shawna with a birthday cake with the Grim Reaper on it! LOL 😊 We came home and got comfy, watching The Avengers on the big screen and may have gotten in a nap or two. Abs came home and got cleaned-up, packed up and loaded up before heading back up to New Castle to attend a party and spend the night with Garrett. After she left, we got the grill fired-up and Rob played the role of grill master. He cooked cheeseburgers (actually a mix of beef and pork that was really good), bratwurst and hot dogs. The grill was loaded! After a big dinner, we cleaned up the kitchen and settled in to play a euchre tourney. After losing the first game, Ann & I got it going on and won four straight games to win the best-of-seven tourney 4-1. We moved to the living room and tried to watch a movie on the big screen but promptly fell asleep.

We enjoyed sleeping-in on a pretty Sunday morning before slowing getting up and getting to our weekly household chores. Ann made an egg & bacon casserole for breakfast. We talked and laughed for a couple hours, waiting for the kids to come home. Rob & I worked on some stuff for his taxes and we watched a couple shows on the big screen. Abby was the first to return. She said she had fun at Garrett’s party but was glad to be home. She was followed closely by Matt & Taylor, who came up in Taylor’s little Honda. After visiting for a short time, we said good-bye to Rob & Sharon, who had to head back up to Lafayette. Ann and the kids went to the store and then headed on over to Mom & Sandy’s house. Luke drove he & I over there a little later in the truck where we met up with our gang along with Dee, Jamie & Grace and of course Mom and Sandy. We sang the birthday song to Gigi in true death-march style then enjoyed some ice cream cake and cookies as well as two other cakes and two more ice creams – if that’s what you wanted. Garrett joined us over there as well and he ended up coming back to the house and hanging out with us the rest of the day. I got Mom’s computer fixed back to the way she likes it then Luke & I got Mom’s umbrella out of the table after it blew over and broke for the third time earlier this week. This last time, I couldn’t’ fix it unfortunately. So, we threw it in the back of the truck along with Matt’s school stuff from Ms. Apple that Gma had been storing in her garage this summer. We threw the umbrella away at the station and then re-packed Taylor’s car. She had just moved out of her summer apartment, so it was already full of her stuff. Still, I was able to add an additional six large bins and a ton of other stuff that Susan had passed on to Matt for his classroom this fall. Thanks to Dad’s training, I was able to easily get it all packed-into that compact car, along with several things from home. Taylor couldn’t believe how much stuff I got in there, but Matt knew how good I had been trained by Dad – so he was less impressed. I got our new air mattress all packed-up and ready to ship back to Amazon. Poor Rob & Sharon had to add air to it twice last night and twice the night before last. Sharon thought there was a pinhole in one of the seams that she thought she could hear. I finished up the laundry and did another round of dishes before packing the rest of Matt’s stuff up and sending he and Taylor back up to Greenwood. We relaxed that afternoon, trying to get in naps on a lazy evening. Garrett headed home shortly before sundown. We raided the fridge for leftovers and settled in to watch Shark Week on the Discovery channel. It was the perfect way to wind-down the week before we turn around and start it all over again in the morning…

Next up is our Waybac section which continues to feature various pictures from Photo Album #18. We lead off this time out with Matt driving his new Hot Wheels Lamborghini Power Wheels car on Christmas Day, across from our Main St home with Rob, Chad and myself – back in December 1998; then we fast forward to find Sandy and the WTRE-sponsored, small, family travelling circus – out at the grassy, fairgrounds parking lot in June 2004; next we have some classic photos of Luke & Alex playing at Christie’s house in June 2004; then we have more of Matt’s Devilrays baseball team pictures in June 2004; then more of Grace’s birthday party at their house near Westport in July 2004; and finally, we have a couple more pix of Abby’s soccer awards day at the YMCA with her two coaches – Matt & I – in October 2004.

Next up is our video section which includes two new home movies this week as well as several from around the internet.

And that does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
