Just Keep Staring at the Sun…Pray for Summer’s End

We set records for high temps at the start of the week but finally enjoyed some more seasonable weather as the weekend hit. Will that will finally mark the end of summer for us? The landscape that we enjoy on our daily commute changed as farmers began harvesting their fields. It’s funny to see one side of the road completely down and the other side is still green and growing. Although the drought continued this week, we finally saw some rain this weekend. But unless you are watering your yard, it is dead and brown as the burn ban continues for the city. Matt had another “interesting??? week at work. He has his hands full, for sure. Thankfully he is young and has lots of energy! We enjoyed seeing him this week for a little while. Abby had a rough week. Although she went to the doctor a couple times, she is still under the weather as I write this entry on Sunday night. We got to see her briefly when she came to Columbus for her appointments. Luke is loving life right now, spending his time “cruising??? with his buddies, getting good grades in school (he has a shot at the A/B honor roll!), spending time with his lady friend and playing a couple football games this week. Ann is using her cane less and less these days…though she still drags it around with her. She is doing great but still has pain and swelling…so, she pushes herself and then pays the price when she gets home. As for me; I had a very busy week at work but it’s only going to get worse next week. I struggled with me diet, gaining a couple pounds and fell well short of my exercise goal with only ten miles of walking this week. However, I had a good physical checkup with my doctor. I obviously need to make some adjustments, but I feel great otherwise. It finally felt like football season this weekend, something I’ve been waiting for a long time. Now let’s just hope the kids can make a run in the sectionals so we can enjoy it! Hello again and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.

It was back to work & school on a warm Monday morning. Luke was late getting up and starting his week. Ann & I both endured very long days. I finished my monthly EOC rounds and found out that our Windows 10 project had been pushed up…and will begin in two days! If that wasn’t enough, we also found out that the Joint Commission will be coming next week to perform their triannual survey – four months early! Thankfully, we pride ourselves in being ready at any time, so it’s all good. I went to lunch with Justin & Danny to McAlister’s then walked two and a half miles. Ann & I came home a shade early to attend Luke’s JV football game at Shriver Field on an unseasonably hot evening. It felt more like the last day of July than it did the last day of September. Luke & the Pirates faced off against Franklin County. Luke started on all teams and played the majority of the game as the boys skunked the Wildcats, 34-0, for their first shutout of the year! Their record is now 4-3 on the year. Luke’s stats: He played middle linebacker on defense, snifferback (tight end) on offense, kickoff return team upback, punt return team back and field goal / PAT team end blocker. He recorded 8 tackles – 6 solos and 2 assists with a tackle for a loss along with a QB hurry. Offensively, he had a sweet pancake and also ran back a kickoff for 28 yards. Ann & I came back to cool down in the A/C and watch some DVR’d shows on the big screen. While I checked in new Hot Wheels and Ann played euchre on her phone, we enjoyed The Simpsons season 31 premier, Last Week Tonight, 9-1-1 and the Fear the Walking Dead season 5 finale. Here are pictures of Luke’s junior varsity football game vs. South Dearborn last week.

Tuesday was yet another dry, record-setting, unseasonably-hot day in the 90’s. I made final preparations for our Win10 project and began prepping for the JCAHO survey. Luke had a long day of school and football practice then ran errands for us and even picked up takeout for dinner. I think we could get used to this! I walked a sweaty 5K after work. I did notice that it was a dry heat – the humidity was pretty low, so I could at least breathe. That evening, we chilled-out with the dogs and watched DVR’d shows on the big screen again: Evil (pilot episode), Magnum PI (season 2 premier), Preacher (series finale), SEAL Team (season 3 premier) and Prodigal Son.

Luke was again late to get up on Wednesday but somehow made it to school on time. He is a lot like his mother where he waits to the last moment to get up and get ready. He said he had a good day at school then went on to football practice. He ran around with Oakley after school until late. Oak is still not practicing yet as he is still on concussion protocol. I had a busy start to my workday that exhausted me but Justin, Vic & I went to lunch at China Buf which helped re-energize me. I got out of work a little late and only got in about a mile of walking before I had leave early to get Ann and run her to Burney for her girls’ night out. She met up with Shawna & her scrapbooking friends. They went out to the St. Paul Tavern that evening for dinner and drinks. That left me with a quiet night with the dogs on the couch. I napped and watched TV while editing pictures for the blog. When Ann got home, she got comfy and within five minutes, she was out… Here are pictures of Luke’s varsity football game vs. Franklin County last week.

Thursday was another long day. We hardly see Luke anymore as he is enjoying his newly found freedom. After he left for school and we went to work, we didn’t see him until late that night. He got cleaned-up, grabbed a snack and went on to bed – which has been par for the course for him lately. I continued to prep for TJC survey next week while helping to coordinate our Win10 upgrade of our entire computer system. It is a very busy time for me. After work, I walked about a 6K, which felt really good. It was still hot, don’t get me wrong – but I was able to breathe finally. I was still sweaty afterwards, but the humidity remains low, which is nice. Ann met up with Abby, who was experiencing some pain. She’s not sure if she has a gallbladder issue or what is up. She saw the doctor and they ran some tests. They want her to do an ultrasound tomorrow and we’ll go from there. She had a lot of trouble getting comfortable that evening, so we’re pretty concerned with her right now. We stopped at the store and got supplies for Ann to make buffalo chicken dip for her dinner and a spicier bowl of it for me to take to the Sunken Boat Bar. It was Poker Night, so I met up with Bryan, Shawn, Rick, Bob and Rob to watch some football, eat like kings, enjoy a few cold beverages and play some cards! We had fun catching up and Shawn and Bryan took home all the $$ that night. Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

Abby was still ailing on Friday. She again did not attend classes, which is like the third straight day for her. She can’t sleep, can’t stop puking and has pains in her side – poor kid… She had a doctor appointment where both her chest x-ray and ultrasound were clear, so still no answers yet. On a more positive note, she was nominated for homecoming queen! The student body will vote this week, so we’ll see what happens – good luck Bu! Ann had the day off. She had big plans but took naps and iced her knees instead. I had a fast day at work with our Win10 Project and TJC prep. I ended up leaving early for my doctor checkup and annual physical. It was mostly good news for me – except for triglycerides. I hate those darn things! I have to do better with my intake and I will also be taking a new supplement. I made sure Luke was up before I left for work, as he was dragging ass again. He enjoyed his last day of school before Fall Break begins next week. He had a big varsity football game that night at Shriver Field vs. rival Batesville. Ann & I went to a tailgating party at the Moeller’s house and enjoyed tons of food and cold beverages. By the time we got to the game, it was getting pretty chilly – thanks to a strong, biting wind out of the north. By the time halftime rolled around, I found myself putting on my sweatshirt (by then everyone else was in coats and blankets). Ann, Matt & I met up with Mom, Sandy and Jamie. We were also joined by Shawn, Ally and Becky. We enjoyed an exciting game as Luke and the Pirates were in a dogfight of a ballgame. The first half went by very fast. The Pirates kicked a field goal late in the half to take a slim lead at the break, 9-7. The score continued to go back and forth in the second half. The Pirates scored late in the 4th quarter to back the lead. They held the ‘Dogs to a 3-and-out. However, on the ensuing drive, they could not convert a key 4th down and turned the ball over with about 90 seconds left in the game. Batesville moved the ball down the field to just over mid-field and threw a Hail Mary as time expired. It was incomplete and as the crowd erupted and the team stormed the field, we saw the yellow hanky on the ground. Turns out, there was some sort of defensive penalty that seemed to cost them about 30 yards. That caused us to have to defend another play on an un-timed down since the game cannot end on a defensive penalty. However, the defense stepped up and the Moeller’s son (Aaron) sacked the QB to end the game and the Pirates won 24-18 in exciting fashion! Their record is now 4-3. Let’s hope they can build on that momentum next week at East Central. Luke started on special teams but saw no snaps on offense or defense. He played on the punt team, the punt return team, the kickoff return team and the PAT/field goal team. He ran back one kickoff for 16 yards and had one pancake. We waited for him to come off the field after the game to talk to him and then he went out with his buddies. He ended up staying the night at Kameron’s house. Meanwhile Ann & I took Matt out for a cold beverage and wings at BWR. We talked with Matt for a while then he drove back up to Greenwood and Ann & I came on home. I was wiped-out and went on to bed while Ann stayed up long enough to fall asleep in her recliner. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

With Luke out of the house overnight, the dogs didn’t sleep well and had me up at 530 on Saturday morning. I tried to go back to sleep but Lola kept barking so I got up and started doing some stuff around the house. It was a cool morning. I even closed a couple windows and put on a sweatshirt. Abby planned to go to Megan’s house for a getaway but they decided to stay at FC. She was sick all day again and couldn’t keep anything down. She feels awful but there’s nothing we can do for her at this point. Luke hung around with Kam and ended up going fishing with him. They stopped in at the house long enough for him to change his shirt and then they were off again. I checked fluids in the vehicles and installed new tags and registrations. After running to Walmart, it was spa day for Black Betty with an oil change and a car wash. Ann & I took it easy, watching DVR’d shows and napping with the dogs. Ann made a great dinner of tilapia and couscous along with corn on the cob and cheesy broccoli – both from the fine folks at Green BEAN. Luke came home for dinner, which was nice. We went out and checked the fluids in his car, put in his new registration and insurance information and put on his new license plate. Mom, Sandy & Pixie came over to visit and decided to stay for dinner and cards. After dinner, Luke went out running around with Shannon and ended up staying the night at Kameron’s house again. We enjoyed a nice evening with Gma & Gigi and even beat them at euchre! After they left, we settled in to watch some of our favorite shows on the big screen and chill with the dogs on a quiet evening with the house open.

Ann got up with the dogs on Sunday morning and let me sleep in. The dogs did do a little better, thanks to Luke who let me put the dogs in his bed overnight. I eventually got around to doing our weekly household chores. It was a cooler, overcast and rainy day. We really needed the rain as our yard is completely dead and dormant right now. I should’ve figured it would rain since I just washed the car yesterday. Luke came home in the afternoon and cleaned up his room and the family room before he had Shannon over. They ended up going out to dinner at Steak & Shake in Batesville. Later, he ended up out at Kam’s house again. Ann & I enjoyed the day off, watching RedZone and napping. Later, I switched over to watch Aikman call the Cowboys game. It was particularly interesting for Matt & Taylor as it was a match-up of their favorite teams. The game was so frustrating (the Cowboys did not execute well) that I turned the game off twice and instead we watched Blue Bloods and then later SVU. That evening, we watched a little bit of the Colts on Sunday Night Football and then flipped over and watched the season 10 premier of The Walking Dead. It was a perfect way to wind down the week before we gear up for what is sure to be the busiest week of the year tomorrow.

Next up is our Waybac section which continues to feature photo album #18 – our final one before we went to exclusively digital photographs. We lead off this time with a classic picture from an old Greensburg High School yearbook with Keith and our friend Bob – circa September 1983; then we fast-forward to pictures of us at the Sand Pebble in Treasure Island, FL in May 2002; next we have a couple scans of a Disney attraction photo envelope – I think this one is from Splash Mountain; then more pictures of Grace’s birthday party at Dee & Chad’s house in July 2004; and finally Abby’s birthday party at our house in September 2004.

Next up is our video section which features two new home movies this week as well as several from around the internet.

And that does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya Mom.
Later, Scheu
