We Celebrate when The Gang’s all Here…Ah, Hot Summer Nights, That’s My Time of the Year

Things began to open back up around the state this week, finally. Look; I understand that this pandemic is serious stuff – I do. However, if we don’t get our companies back to work – especially the small businesses – we might be alive but it won’t be much of a life. So, I was glad to see more people coming out and stimulating our local economy. The proof was everywhere: the streets were busier; the restaurants were fuller (the state upped capacity to 75% on Friday) and Walmart was packed this weekend. Matt came home for a few days, so it was great spending time with him and hope we see a lot more of him this summer. We got another piece of his furniture puzzle in place this week…now if he can just find the right apartment to put it all in! He is looking good; trying to eat healthier and is working out again. Abby worked a lot this week but also spent a lot of time with Gary as well. Luke also focused his time on work and friends this week. He had an important football meeting where he learned that they are moving forward as if the season was a go this fall. They can start next month, but I encouraged him to start doing stuff on his own now, but we’ll see how far that goes… Ann enjoyed spending time with friends this week, which was good for her soul. Although I missed my exercise goal by three miles (logging a little over twelve walking miles), I still managed to average 11K steps per day this week. My diet was up and down, but mostly better. I am hoping to build on my momentum this coming week and maybe start to see some weight loss instead of seeing that damn scale yo-yoing back and forth each week. Justin is trying to be healthier as well so maybe we could make a little wager to help motivate us! The week started out as a nasty scorcher but cooled off a bit as the week progressed…to the point of it being in the lower seventies with no humidity to speak of as I write this blog entry. Although more sports are coming back, many things continue to get cancelled – from concerts and festivals to city fireworks and even county fairs. What a weird time we live in… However, we did see something cool and new in the park – a frisbee golf course! I sure hope one of the kids will play with me next weekend…that’d be the best Father’s Day gift I could ask for… Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.

It was back to work for everyone on Monday morning. We all had long days, wishing we’d taken the day off! I walked nearly 4 miles in the heat and humidity. When we got home, I ran next door to talk to Jim about DJ eating his extension cord and asked what size and color he wanted as a replacement. He was really cool about it, but we really hope this training collar helps her get a handle on her behavior. Abs helped me put new wiper blades on Tonya and Betty White before it starts raining tomorrow. Luke enjoyed the day off, hanging out with his buddies. Abby had the day off as well, cleaning up her room. Since she won’t be around for Taco Tuesday, she went to ElRep a day early for dinner with Ann & I. We enjoyed margaritas and tacos as their dining room was now open! Yay!! We dropped Ann off and ran to Walmart to get supplies to make mojitos that evening. We enjoyed some porch time until we couldn’t stand the humidity any longer and retreated into the sweet air conditioning. Later, I collected pix for this week’s blog entry and napped during some DVR’d shows before calling it a night. Here are some pictures from Uncle Chuck’s celebration of life last weekend.

Tuesday would’ve been Mom & Dad B’s 42nd wedding anniversary. It was another long day for Ann & I but it was mercifully cut short when Ann’s office lost power that afternoon. So, we ran to Lowe’s to pick-up replacement extensions cords for Jim & I (that Delilah destroyed over the last week) and look at ideas for countertops and a liquor cabinet. Unfortunately, we didn’t find anything worthwhile. When we got home, it looked like it had rained pretty hard but Ann & I didn’t see any precip at all – well maybe a few sprinkles when we walked into Lowe’s but that was it. We ran past the big Cork on the east side of town on our way home, looking for Cachaca (a Brazilian liquor that we want to try) but didn’t have any luck. Jim didn’t answer his door, so I left his new extension cords on his porch, grabbed the mail and came inside to get ready to exercise with Luke. However, it had gotten very humid and Luke decided not to go out with me. I, too, lost the urge myself and so I sat down and started editing pictures for this week’s blog entry. We ordered Koch’s for dinner and Luke drove me to pick it up in the pouring rain. Luke was the first one to mention it, but it was a little awkward in there. They’ve redesigned the place and now there’s virtually no room to do anything in there – especially when there’s 3 workers and 4 customers trying to stay out of the rain. The sign said only one person at a time but none of us were willing to go and stand in the rain (or even walk back to our cars) since it was raining so hard. Ann had bought a couple gift certificates back when this whole pandemic started, as a way to support local businesses. We finally had a chance to use one of them tonight, so that was nice. We settled in at home and began watching a new series called The Widow with Kate Beckinsale on Prime Video. Abby worked 2nd shift at Wings that night and was already gone before we got home. Luke told us that he and Jessica had split up, which was sad. He seemed OK with it because he wanted to spend more time with friends, hanging out and going fishing, etc. – which he did that evening after the strong storm blew through (remnants of the tropical storm that blew up from the south). Here’s pictures of Abby & Gigi on Election Night last week.

We had a hot and humid start to our Humpday. The remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal moved through the area. We had really strong winds all day but thankfully no more precipitation. We enjoyed had fast days at work. Ann’s was more hectic than mine, but she managed. I walked three miles after work on an incredibly breezy afternoon. Abby had a hair appointment with Jami that afternoon and then dropped by to see Ann. I talked to her briefly as she was pulling out as I was pulling into Ann’s work. She drove up to Newcastle to spend the night with Gary. Luke slept in then worked 2nd shift at Arby’s. We took it easy that evening, watching more of The Widow. While Ann was making Fireworks popcorn for dinner, she noticed Delilah had gotten out of the fence again and was trying to figure out a way to get back in. She had the neighbor dog’s bone again. I saw what appeared to be a patch – probably from the neighbors behind us – where DJ had chewed a hole in the fence again. So, we put her back on the chain whenever she went out that night. She’ll have to be on it until we can figure where in the hell she’s broken that fence this time… Here are pictures of some recent additions to my Hot Wheels collection.

It was much cooler when we headed into work on Thursday morning. It was another long, busy day for both Ann & I. The boys and I went to China Buffet for lunch, giving us a brief break from the grinding day. I walked three and a half miles on a hot afternoon. Thankfully, the humidity was low so it was manageable. Ann was late getting out of work, so I ran to Kroger to look through their alcohol selections but didn’t find anything worthwhile. When we got home that night, Delilah & I mended the back fence where she had created a new hole. While I wasn’t looking, the little shit stole my needle nose pliers and although I looked everywhere in the backyard, I couldn’t find them. I hope I find them when I mow over them this weekend. Meanwhile, Abby drove home from Gary’s house and worked at BWR until late. Luke had the day off and ended up running around with his football buddies (including Oakley, Ethan, Brayden and Blayne). They attended a big football meeting (it was a virtual one via Zoom). All the boys ended up coming over with a few others to hang out on the back porch as we all ate some of the hottest salsa that I’ve personally ever tasted. It made me sweat and the boys were all whining and carrying on afterward. We even got out the milk and bread as well as water and sodas to help extinguish their tongues and bellies, which were on fire! Here are random pictures from our recent adventures.

Friday would’ve been Mom’s 71st birthday. I texted a few times with Dad & Rob and I think we all had the same feeling – it seems like decades since we last celebrated Mom’s birthday with her… I had day off, as did most of the directors and managers at my work. Ann worked in Greensburg that morning. Abby got up with her and they went for their coffee as they do every Friday now. I paid bills and did a few chores around the house before picking up Ann and heading out to Wings & Rings where Abby was working a double shift. We enjoyed a nice lunch with Bu, Kristen & the gang out there. Matt came to town that morning to get a COVID-19 test to see if he can work at Aspen this weekend for some extra cash now that he has the summer off from teaching. He was supposed to also have a tutor gig as well, but that fell through. He is hoping that the bars open up in Indy so he can go back to work there. He couldn’t make lunch with us, so we got takeout for him. I was going to mow & trim that afternoon, but since Matt was home we just visited and then he worked-out by running a couple miles and doing 50 pushups & sit-ups…impressive! After he got cleaned-up, we decided to play cornhole…which lasted about 8 hours! We hadn’t played since Rob & Sharon were over last. We laughed when we reminisced about dancing to James Brown at 130 in the morning with Uncle Rob! 😊 Hey; it was just too funky to not dance! Luke got off work and joined us outside that night. He played with us and later made a fire in the fire pit. Gary drove down from Newcastle to stay the night with Abby. She played some cornhole with us until about 2 am when we decided Luke should take us to Taco Bell! Instead, he took Gary and the rest of us cleaned-up the backyard, put away stuff in the kitchen (we had a few cocktails that evening, including 3 rounds of vodka and 7-up and 4 amazing rounds of Long Island Ice Teas!) and got Matt’s bed ready. When the boys got back, we cooled down in the living room and watched a couple episodes of Rick & Morty on the big screen until about 330 before calling it a night… I had just happened to be out surfing the internet and decided to check out Mom’s online obit. I was pleasantly reminded of all the wonderful guestbook entries on Mom’s Legacy.com website. Here they are:

We were up at the butt-crack of dawn on Saturday morning. After sleeping about three hours, I got up to load up Ann’s scrapbooking supplies into her friend Rhonda’s truck as they headed down to Lawrenceburg for a long day of scrapbooking with Shawna and the gang. I did some chores around the house and got the kids up. Matt & Luke piled into the truck with me to go over to Ann’s old house and pick up a sectional couch for Matt that Ann had purchased from Noah’s sister who lives there now. The boys and I got it hauled across town and in through the back door to store it for Matt until he finds a new apartment. We have those tables for him as well out the garage. Now he just needs a TV stand and he’ll be all set! When we got back, Luke & I loaded up Betty White with our yard tools and headed over to Mom & Sandy’s house to mow and trim. Thankfully, Vic was able to get our weed eater working like new again, which is very cool! Meanwhile, Gale & Gary went to Daleville to go canoeing at Canoe Country and go down the White River all day. Matt worked 2nd shift at Aspen. Luke & I visited with Memaw in her backyard for about a half hour, catching up with each other as we enjoyed the beautiful weather. It was much cooler, though it did get up to about 80 for a little bit. We had the house open for several hours this morning, but ended up turning the air back on about mid-afternoon. After we finished working there, we went shopping at Walmart and then got takeout from McDonalds and came home to relax and eat for a while. Later, we mowed the lawn and then came in and showered. As I was mowing, one of our neighbors came over and told me that Delilah & Molly had eloped earlier. So I applied a temporary fix until I can buy a new pair of needle-nose pliers or some other form of tin snips to cut a new piece of fence since Delilah stole the last pair. I looked and looked and even kept a close eye out for them as I mowed today, but no luck so far… So, for now, she’s back on the leash. Luke picked out a new iPhone for his birthday. He ended up with the Max version. I think it’s funny how he used to make fun of me having a, “tablet” for a phone just a few years ago and now his is the biggest in the house! We took naps and watched the first-ever nighttime race at Martinsville we taped earlier this week. That evening, he worked at Arby’s – though he really didn’t want to go because he was so tired. To his credit, he sucked it up and went in to work. Gale & Gary came home that evening…only to clean-up and head right back out as they drove up to Mallory’s celebration of life / party. Abs wanted to go for a while to support Mal and Megan, so they were gone for a few hours. Gary wasn’t feeling so good when he got back and ended up going on to bed. When Matt got off work, he came home to change and workout again. He ran a couple miles then did 75 pushups and sit-ups. I wish I still had that much energy! That evening, we unloaded Ann’s stuff and enjoyed a little patio time. It was so cool; at one point, the whole neighborhood was alive – there were fireworks going off in the background while the neighbors and us all had fires and loud music. It was great! As usual, we outlasted them all. We had a few cocktails as we continued to play Around the World in the liquor cabinet…even though we still haven’t found a liquor cabinet! We started with a couple Sex on the Beach drinks then moved on to Cabo Wabo margaritas before we enjoyed a round of Miehanas. We talked and laughed for a few hours – we even had a cigar – before coming inside to watch a couple episodes of Rick & Morty and then called it a night at the wee hours again.

We enjoyed sleeping in on a cooler Sunday morning before getting up and slowly doing household chores. All the kids got cleaned up and went over to Gma & Gigi’s house for a big breakfast. While Matt & Abby went on to work, Luke & Gary brought breakfast back for me, which was awesome! While the boys and Ann napped, I wrote out the rest of my html code and uploaded my pictures and video as I finished up this week’s blog entry. I logged in a few new Hot Wheels as I watched four races on the DVR from this weekend. Abby came home from work to shower then she & Gary went to the store for Ann so she could make chicken enchiladas for dinner – yum! It was a gorgeous day, as we opened up the house early this morning and kept it open all day. Abby laid down, saying she wasn’t feeling well. She tried to eat but wasn’t able to so she went back to bed. Matt came home for a few minutes then headed back up to his apartment and Ms. Taylor. Gary also left us that evening, making Delilah sad that her boys had both left her. We enjoyed a quiet night, napping to NASCAR before heading on to bed to put a cap on the week. It was a relaxing way to wind down the weekend before we turn around and start it all over again in the morning. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Next up is our Waybac section. We lead off with a few from my cousins, who sent me some sweet photos that I’ve never seen before. We start in December 1978 with Dad S at Granny’s house then we move to December 1988 for pix from the Scheu family Christmas at John & June’s house; then a year later at the 1989 Scheu family Christmas party at the same place. Next, we fast-forward to our 2003 pix we’ve been featuring in this space for the last several weeks: in June, we have Luke’s birth; in July, we see 4th of July and Fair Parade festivities; in August we see Gigi’s new hot tub; in November we have both Danny’s and Mom O’s birthday parties, as well as Thanxmas; and in December we have Christmas Eve fun.

And that does it for this week’s entry of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom – happy birthday…
