…Ten, Ten, Ten for Everything, Everything, Everything, Everything…

Yep; it’ll only happen twice more in our lifetimes – today, the date is 10/10/10 – a day when all numbers are identical; some say it is a special, mystical day; others a chance to make a fresh start. They estimate 30,000 weddings in the US alone today…kinda cool when you think about the anomaly. Brrr…we’ve gone from record-setting heat to our first frost advisory in the span of two short weeks! Mother Nature has lost her mind this week again, going from a low in the upper 30s early in the week to highs in the upper 80s this weekend!! We went from bed warmers on Tuesday to air conditioners on Saturday! …and still no rain this week. On Monday morning, our microwave suddenly stopped working. I unplugged it for the day and plugged it back in when we got home from work – to a different outlet – after battling with Ann on the position of the refrigerator (she pushes it back too far, pinching the cord to the microwave). Thankfully, leaving it unplugged all day seemed to do the trick (the touch screen was unresponsive), but now the cord is ugly in its location…hmph; women! Luke went back to school on Monday after being ill on Sunday. He did fine w/ no further bouts of yacking…although he did have one of his patented “spicy farts,??? as he calls them as he ran to the restroom while eating popcorn…he is so cute – even when he’s gross. LOL! Lukey was supposed to get 2 teeth filled due to cavities, but because he was sick – Ann cancelled the appointment. Grandma again picked up Matt from football practice, as has become the normal routine. Ann and the kids spent quite a bit of time over at Mom & Sandy’s that night as Luke had to eat biscuits and gravy with Grandma…of which he didn’t eat much. In fact, he hasn’t had an appetite most of the week come to think of it. Lukey joined me on a bike ride when he finally came home. Matt and I turned off Monday Night Football as the Dolphins got smashed by the Patriots. On Tuesday, Abby went to soccer practice as Luke & I went for a short bike ride. It was pretty chilly and we both had to stop and come back for sweatshirts. That night, we closed up the house tight and prepared for the first frost advisory of the season. Matt was feeling the pressure of high school that night, frustrated with the amount of Spanish assignments he had allowed to pile up due to procrastination. Being the awesome parents that we are, we helped him do a semester’s worth of assignments that night as we prepared a Spanish dinner, listened to a few hours of Spanish music, had him call a friend and have a Spanish conversation, read online Spanish forecasts, read an online Spanish article and translate it, give us a test, make flash cards and a few other things. On Wednesday, Bu went to dance class at Dixon Dance. Luke & I went for a good bike ride. He still wasn’t eating much and skipped dinner altogether that evening. The low’s reached down in to the low 40s. Matt found out the name of the photographer that has been taking pictures at the ball games – Tree City Photos. We found the website and sure enough – he had a couple really good pictures of Matt after he made his interception last week. We emailed him to see if he had taken any others of the actual pick or of the coin flip when he was captain…but haven’t heard any replies at this time. We did go ahead and order the two pictures, which were really good. Matt & I were mortified as we watched Roy Halladay deal the Reds a no-hitter (the first since the 1950’s and only the second in history) as they beat the Reds 4-0. During the game, I saw that Mom B had finally put up a profile picture…and even had a few others on there as well. I liked the one of Rob, Sharon, Mom & Dad at the Treasure Island condo the best…

On Thursday, Abby went to Aunt Dee’s house after school and then went to her final soccer practice of the season and then on to dance class. We picked up Luke and came on to Batesville to watch Matt and his freshman football squad battle their archrivals. Mom & Sandy also came, getting there about half way through the 1st quarter. The Pirates outclassed the Bulldogs this night. Greensburg absolutely had their way with Batesville on both sides of the ball. They moved the ball with ease and disrupted their offense with penetration in their backfield all evening long. Matt had possibly his finest performance of the year, recording 2 sacks, a forced fumble, several tackles – a couple for loss – and even a few pancakes! He played nearly the entire game, coming off the field once for two plays to get a drink. He played guard and tackle on the offense, defensive tackle along with special teams. The Pirates extended their winning streak by claiming a 30-15 victory! Their record now sets at 7-0!! Batesville really only had one good scoring drive, coming at the onset of the second half. They also scored a garbage touchdown at the end of the game. In an unusual stroke of what I would consider questionable coaching, the Pirates staff decided to try and run the score up at the end of the game. While up by two scores and a minute or so to play, the Pirates decided not to kneel on the ball (in my opinion, the classy thing to do), and instead – the coaching staff put the pedal to the metal and continued trying to score. I realize that it’s a rivalry game, but in my opinion, that was just wrong thing to do…I felt it showed poor judgment by the head football coach and sent a poor message to our young, impressionable kids on both teams. It was very warm that day and evening. The sun was really bad and was right in our face the first half. When we got home that night, we were thrilled to find 3 big boxes of Fireworks popcorn had arrived. Ann obliged us with a ton of popcorn for supper that night!

By the time Friday finally rolled around, I was pretty stressed at work. We had been working hard all week to get some final preparations done for our State Licensing inspection. It was supposed to occur on Thursday morning. The inspector was to be there for two full days. She called four separate times on Thursday, stating she would be later and later, finally cancelling her visit late in the afternoon. So, she was to be in at 9:30 the next day…only to call and delay it several times again. She finally showed around 2 pm. By that time, I was exhausted from nerves, anticipation and adrenaline. This was the final inspection needed before we were allowed to change over our licensure to completely Private Secure. We were relieved to receive a perfect score with no deficiencies and no plan of corrections! While I was sweating bullets, Luke & Ann were also in Columbus. She had taken the day off to attend the field trip with the little first graders. They visited the Columbus Kids Commons, which featured several activities for the kiddos, including the Japan House, where he tried on Japanese shoes that were like wooden flip flops, walked barefoot on tatomi flooring; went down the giant toilet (which was actually a slide); a giant bubble maker (that Luke actually stood in!); did lots of crafts, did some drawing and had lunch with Mom. Matt dressed for the varsity football game again, getting zero playing time. The varsity team was blown out 55-0 by East Central – whom the freshman team will face this coming Thursday, arguably the best team they’ve faced this year. The varsity kept par for their course as they lost again to even their record at 4-4 for the year. I was late getting home after our regulatory inspection. When I did, Lukey & Bu were ready to go for a bike ride. We decided to go back through the woods again, as it is much more fun than just going around our neighborhood. You’d think I would learn. As fate would have it, I ended up with yet another flat tire…but it was worth it; we had a great ride that went through all three neighborhoods and lasted nearly an hour. We came home, ate dinner and caught the Reds game…only to see them build a lead and then give it away to go down 0-2 in the NLDS. Matt brought home his football pictures tonight as well.

We were up early on Saturday morning, as Abby had her season-ending 2010 EISA Tournament. They faced the same team they played last week, when they successfully achieved their first victory of the year. Their team was very late in arriving, showing up only 10 minutes before the start of the game. It was pretty chilly that morning at the 8:30 kickoff. Grandma O showed up to cheer on Abby and her Kova Fertilizer team took on the Sunman Wilhelm Lumber team. Although Bu had more practice time this week than she had in any previous week, she played the fewest minutes than any game this season. She had a couple nice plays at midfielder in the first half. In the second half, she started on the bench, subbed in for about 10 minutes on defense and was pulled out for the rest of the game. At the end of regulation, the teams were locked in a 0-0 tie. In lieu of normal procedure (playing a pair of 7 ½ minute periods, they went straight to penalty shots. Not only was the choice of players during regulation a little squirrely, the coaches selection of players to take the penalty kicks was suspect as well. At the end of penalty shots, they were still tied 3-3, leading to a nerve-wracking 2nd round of penalty shots. …and as if the 1st round of selections had a couple of questions; there were more questions for the 2nd round. Sadly, Abby was not selected to participate and they lost 3-1, ending their season. We were sure proud of the girls for hanging tough, but frustrated with the coach for his choices. Ann and I determined that he must’ve had other plans for that afternoon and really didn’t want to win the game. There were several girls that also had this attitude, as evidenced by not hustling / not being aggressive and not going to the ball – but were left in the game just the same. Whatever; this team is done and Bu will have a new coach next year. It was a tough double overtime loss that was nearly as heartbreaking as the double OT loss my football team had my senior year in the sectionals – we were 8-0 going in and lost to Valpo – the eventual runners up to Ben Davis that fall. Matt rode his bike out to the high school for football practice and then again back home again. The kids played kickball out front for several hours. Matt pulled the Pacifica out of the way in the driveway in order to use the pickup as the backstop for the game and then pulled it back up when they were done. 😛 That night, Purdue played their Big 10 opener vs. Northwestern. They looked better than expected with their former 3rd string QB, Rob Henry in as the starting signal caller. Despite a phantom holding call that negated a TD and a terrible job done the entire game by the Side Judge on the near side (how many bad spots can one man have in a game…talk about getting “homered!!???), the Boilers were able to come out of it with a road victory, 20-17. It was ugly, but it was a W. Poor Ann caught whatever Lukey had earlier in the week, as she was feeling awful all day. The poor thing slept even more than she normally does. Thankfully, she never did up-chuck though! Today was a huge day in history, as it was John Lennon’s 70th birthday. It’s been 30 years since he was taken from this world. Very sad to think of what might have been…

On Sunday, we did our weekly chores and watched sports galore. The Colts looked awful but pulled out a victory at home. The race was in California and Gordon had a strong car and was in the lead at one point but goofed in the pits when he was caught speeding, forcing him to go to the back of the pack towards the end of the race. Thanks to a great pit stop late in the race with a gutsy 2-tire call, he was able to finish 9th in the race and move up to 4th overall in the Cup standings, just 85 points out of the lead with six races left in The Chase. The Devil Rays won another game to force a game 5! Go TB! The Cowboys were up next and had flashes of brilliance – they are definitely talented; but they lack discipline and made too many turnovers and played some pretty shitty defense. They tied it late in the game only to give up a long kickoff return and then had a couple of interceptions that just killed ‘em. Although I like Wade Phillips, I think they need a guy that will get in their faces and someone who can shore up all the mistakes. They have way too many penalties, far too many turnovers and give up an inordinate amount of points for a team picked to go to the Super Bowl – something that looks to be beyond their reach at this point… During the game, Matt asked for my help in Algebra. I was more than happy to oblige him. He was making up all the work he had missed throughout the first semester The Reds held their home opener – their first in the post season since 1995 – for the NLDS, down two games to none in the best of five series. They needed a victory to stave off elimination and allow me to attend my first post season Reds game with Jamie tomorrow night…unfortunately, it will never be – the Reds were swept, losing 2-0 in another dominant performance by the Phillies. If they continue to play like this, I don’t know how they can’t win the championship. The Reds had a hell of a year and should have a great team next year. They are still very young with many young arms and bats. Here’s to the 2010 Redlegs – thanks for a great year, guys – we’ll get the pennant next year. Here are this week’s videos of the kids’ exploits, along with several other music videos I wanted to share:

Time for our Waybac feature this week… Leading off this week is a cute seasonal one…since it’s approaching mid-October, we have a Halloween-oriented picture of Uncle Dan & Aunt Sharon from October of ’79; a couple crops of Dad B and I burning leaves at our Kenwood St. home in LaPorte in the late fall of 1980; Rob & Grandpaw Brown from the same period and same location – looks to be in the half-bath off the kitchen; then Grandmaw & Grandpaw in the kitchen and me in the living room, assembling a new table Dad & I had built during late December of ’80.

Great game #64. You are looking stronger and stronger with each game. I love watching you, Abby and Luke and Grandpa and I both are sooo proud of each of you. Abby wait till next year and you will be a little dynamo. You have all the skills and as your dad said…this is just a building year. Luke sure had fun at his activities and it was neat watching him discover different things. The pictures were great also…as was the Jib Jab. I laughed and laughed at the green monster. Actually Abby was cute with her hairdo. Loved Matt’s widow’s peak and eyebrows. Ann is also cute as a witch. Luke’s smile was also cute as a little mummy. We are having beautiful weather right now and Dad starts vacation tomorrow (Saturday) and we are doing a few small things. Day trips and some yardwork. Well, you guys have a good weekend and we love you. Also, can’t believe my boys will be 42 and 31. Boy, am I getting old!!! XXXOOO’s
