Feeling Stronger every Day (You know I’m Alright now)…

We had another good week, here at the Scheu abode. Abby continued to be our main focus, obviously. Miraculously, she has mended very well and very fast! What a difference a week makes…just look at the pictures below from the start of the week to today and you’ll see that there’s no comparison. On Monday, Abby got a hard cast put on her right wrist. She chose Pirate blue over lime green because she was afraid it would look like a giant booger and also so she could use it to root in the football game this week – LOL! She had the option of going with a model that would be above her elbow or below it. It would be more immobilized above the wrist but would severely hinder her dance classes and her musical as well. However, with that increased mobility comes great responsibility as she has two weeks to allow that wrist to heal and if it doesn’t heal properly in that time frame, she will have surgery on it and will have pins inserted in to arm to help it heal. Matt had football practice – the first Monday night in a long time that he didn’t have a game. Abby had tap dance class and then Jr. High musical practice. By the time she got home, her cast was already filled with signatures and she hadn’t even made it to school yet! Meanwhile, Luke and I exercised outside, playing catch with a football while we walked out in the Ryle Addition. It was a gorgeous day with lots of sunshine and temps up almost to 70 degrees! Abby’s right knee is pretty swollen and very colorful – lots of greens and blacks – and her eye and head has really mended quickly.

On Tuesday, Abby was up early for Academic Team practice (her injuries haven’t caused her to miss a single beat of her hectic schedule – more power to her) before school. After school, Matt had football practice, Abby had musical practice again and then jazz dance class (the first for her in a couple months). Luke & I repeated our exercise routine from the previous day as it was even warmer today, topping out in the mid-seventies! Lola and Molly were taken to the groomers for a “doggie day spa” – as Ann put it – at the Double K Ranch, just outside of Columbus on our way to work. The girls look so nice. Mom would be proud! 😉 I know they act like they feel better and they sure do smell a whole lot better!
It was cooler on Wednesday and it rained that evening, washing out our evening walk. We heard from Luke’s basketball coach at the YMCA. His practices will start this weekend with his first game next Saturday! The World Series was also postponed due to weather and it continued to get colder as the evening went on. I got on Facebook that night and got some great pictures from family on the Morgan side, including my “Aunt” Brenda fishing, Mom with her cousins – Brenda, Cathy and Karen; and finally my cousin Wendy with her daughter, Bethany.

On Thursday, we had some light frost on the car windows and the grass. It was Parent / Teacher Conference day, so the kids all had the day off at their respective schools. Luke went to Brandy’s while Bu stayed home with Matt. Ann and I left work early to attend conferences all afternoon. We started with Abby who had all A’s with one B. Good reports with the obvious, “She talks a little too much” comment. Luke was up next. He also got all A’s with a one B as well and also received a very positive review, behaviorally. Matt’s report card was a little rough but his teachers equally love having him in class. …now if he could just pull up some of less desirable grades! Ann and I went out for lunch to Panda Garden (love their House Special Fried Rice and Crab Rangoon!) and then did dessert at Dairy Queen (we never get to go to either of these places due to Luke’s allergies). It was my little brother’s 32nd birthday – Happy Birthday, Robby!! Wish we could’ve gotten together this year… Matt had a late football practice, under the lights, from 6-9 pm. We picked him up after the team dinner and watched the Cardinals win an amazing game to force a 7th and decisive game in St. Louis on Friday night. It was cold again overnight, dropping down in to the 30s…brrrrrr….

We woke up to fairly heavy frost on the ground and car windows on Friday morning. Bu attended a junior high dance after school and participated as a grim reaper; dying of lung cancer – meaning she wasn’t able to talk to anyone all day! She said that was pretty hard. Lukey stayed the night with his buddy “Jermie” and Alex also stayed the night as well to celebrate his birthday. Abby met up with Kenzie at the football game and she again stayed the night with us. Matt, meanwhile, was still playing football – this time vs. the Edgewood Mustangs. Due to them coming all the way from the west side of Bloomington to here, a couple hours away, the start time was pushed back to 7:30. This only made it colder for the game on an already frigid evening. Ann and I came equipped with coats, blankets, hats and gloves! We did fine and even Mom and Sandy joined us. Sandy got too cold at halftime and went to the car. After the Mustangs jumped out to a 12-0 lead, I finally put on my lucky Slicers Football hat and miraculously, the Pirates came all the way back to grab the lead just before halftime with a 14-12 edge. It was more of the 2nd half as the Pirates played in a close game through the 3rd quarter when they gradually began to pull away and eventually won 35-20. Matt FINALLY got a few plays in on varsity when it wasn’t just garbage time! He held his own for the handful of plays he was in on. He did not record any tackles at DT, but had a big grin on his face afterwards! I can only hope that he builds on this experience and the coach continues to utilize him this next game vs. Indian Creek, who also won their 2nd round game. So we meet in Trafalgar next Friday night to determine the Sectional championship! What a great present from Matt and his Pirates team – something I was never able to achieve – not only one Sectional win…but now two!! Yes, I said present, as it was my 43rd birthday. Nothing like working your butt off all day and then sitting out in the 30 degree weather for 3 hours…and we didn’t even have any liquor to keep us warm! We headed over to Mom and Gigi’s house after the game, where we had pizzas, chips, chocolate cake, pumpkin roll, ice cream and pumpkin sugar cookies!! I received a very, very nice weed eater (I am hopeful that this one will last longer than the two or three years I normally get) and lots of Hot Wheels! Jamie, Dee & Grace joined us for dinner and dessert. The boys watched Game 7 of the World Series and the Cardinals defeated the Rangers to capture their 11th title in their history in St. Louis, as Texas came up a little short again this year. It was again very, very cold overnight, getting down below the freezing mark for the first time this season…I’m not sure I’m ready for it to be quite THAT cold yet.

There was more frost on the ground and vehicles on Saturday. It was definitely cold enough to snow, starting off the day at 31 degrees when Matt went to football practice. Bu and I picked up Luke and Jeremy’s house and took him to his first basketball practice at the YMCA. Once settled in, Abby & I headed to the walking track, above the courts. Afterwards, we grabbed BK (the kids did anyhow, I had Taco Bell) and came home. Luke went out to his friend Conner’s house in the country and everyone else took naps…well, except Bu who cleaned her room…no wait, she didn’t do that either (slacker!). Purdue got smashed by Michigan in the Big House. We got our favorite take out from Koch’s (Matt, how was that half chicken??) and then I took Luke and Abby out to the Haunted Woods, located out at our friend, Big Mike’s house way out in the country. He had given us some passes to come check it out and we had a ball. Luke was Mr. Cool, going up to the “scarers” and saying, “What’s up?” and “Gimme a high five.” Abby on the other hand was drawing all the attention of the ghouls and she had a death grip on my left arm. Luke was cool…until we got to the chain saws, that is! He jumped about a foot off the ground, grabbed my arm and yelled, “I’m ready to go home, Daddy!!!” 😉 They both toughed it out and had a blast. I laughed so hard at those two. It was a fun (and cold) way to spend the evening. We’ll come back again next year and maybe then Matt won’t be too cool to come with us. It seemed that most of the workers out there knew Abby and kept asking where Matt was.
We tried to sleep in on Sunday, but the damn dogs wouldn’t hear of it, barking and barking. So, for no real reason at all, we were all up before 8 today. We did our weekly chores around the house and watched sports on TV. Ann made my favorite meal for lunch – lasagna! What in the hell are the referees doing to the NFL this year? They are calling stupid fouls for legal hits. Where is the contact? C’mon, man! It’s football – not basketball for God’s sake! Speaking of those greedy bastards, they have had to cancel all of November’s games now due to the NBA strike. On the news last night, they estimated that the games that were cancelled for November alone will cost the city of Indy approximately $1 million. Speaking of Indy, the Colts looked awful today against the lowly Titans. I thought the linebackers and Painter played good, but the team as a whole looked lack luster. If those guys don’t want to play, let’s get some guys in there that will go balls-out! The NASCAR boys were at Martinsville. It was Gordon’s 650th start in his career! Jeff got wrecked early, on lap 8 and dropped to 41st place – only to fight back to lead for a bunch of the race and came up just a little bit short, in 3rd place. It was a great run for those guys. The Cowboys played the Eagles in primetime on Sunday Night Football. Go ‘Boys! We had popcorn and enjoyed The Simpson’s Treehouse of Horrors XXII – can you believe it’s been 22 years!!?? Afterwards, we got jammies on and watched It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. 🙂

Next up, we have our weekly selection of videos, including one, short family video and then a boatload of various ones from around the internet, including some seasonal ones, some oldies that brought back memories of Friday night victories and lots of others…enjoy! Remember that if you are viewing this entry via a feed on Facebook or My Yahoo!, etc – this section will likely not be viewable. Instead, you will see a blank area or add letter/number combinations. To view the videos as well as see the blog in it’s native format, please visit our home page at www.scheumann.us and click on the blog link. See ya there!

…and in honor of Matt’s big victory over Edgewood in the 2nd round of the Sectionals, I present what my Coach O’Neil used to play for us after each victory. He actually had a mix tape of old 60s party tunes, but this was the first song and I have so many fond memories of dancing and singing (screaming?) in the locker room to this song after all those high school football victories…here’s to you, Matt, the Pirates, Coach O’Neil and all you Slicer football alumni that remember all those special locker room celebrations…

Next up, let’s take a look at our weekly Waybac feature. Well, this is the last of the bunch for me. This coming week, I’m going to have to pull out a new box of goodies and find some more photos. I look forward to breaking out another box of pix and finding lots of goodies for you and I to talk about and cherish the memories. First up this time out we have the debut of a darling picture of my beautiful wife. We talked about this and guessed about 1975-ish for this Dixon Dance Studio picture of my honey; then we fast forward two decades for four pix of the Bryan Family Christmas up in the living room of our Rockwood St home in LP, which feature Sharon & Dan, Nathan & Katie, Deena Marie and Dad in December of 1992; and finally a great picture of Aunt Marilou, Uncle Kenny, Dad and Rob at the Brown Family Christmas in Rossville at their house, I believe.

This section starts with 4 pix of Mom & Dad’s visit down to see Rob in Three Springs, AL in February of 1997; that is followed by several of Matt & I in Pine Lake up in La Porte; then Rob at the Bryan Family Christmas in Indy in ’99 at Vird & Belinda’s place; and finally we end with several of Christmas time on E Main St., in Greensburg – late in ’99…which was Abby’s first Christmas – of course.

The last section starts with Mom & Dad on the boat in July of 2000, presumably on Pine Lake in La Porte; then 2 of Matt and Bu at Chuck E Cheese’s in March of 2001 (he had a little birthday party with friends at Chuck’s place); and then finally we have a pair of fun pictures of Matt at his other birthday party just a day later – this time with family and close family friends only – including Matt & Bu, Mom, Baili and Matt’s friend, Nathan H

And that puts the wraps on this edition of the Scheu Family Blog. As always, thank you for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with ya next time out. Until then, have a good one.
Later, Scheu

Tom, the video says it is not available. Loved the pics that Luke did and am so glad that Abby is on the mend. Hope the doctors visit goes well and it is healing okay. Congrats to Matt and keep up the good work. Lola and Molly both looked soooo nice! They looked like they enjoyed being clean again. I know it is hard to take the time sometimes but…they were in bad need of a haircut.
Until next week…..Love you bunches and XXXOOO’s

  • Sorry about that Mom. YouTube has a new upload tool they rolled out this past week. I used it to put this week’s video up on the site. However, something malfunctioned – obviously. I am re-upping it as I type this. Funny thing is that if you click on the YouTube link in the lower right hand corner of the video, it takes you out to the Youtube sight and it plays fine. I tried editing it and looked again at the settings. Funny thing is; it still says it is processing now – two days later. So, it is obviously screwed up a little to prevent it from embedding properly. It will be fixed momentarily. Thanks for the head’s up! :0) We love you guys,
    – Tom
