To Seek the Man whose Pointing Hand the Giant Step Unfolds

We have had an enjoyable week off, here at the Scheu abode. We had a touch of snow, but it quickly melted. It has been mostly overcast and damp/rainy – meaning we played inside the whole time. We started cleaning up the house on Monday. It was a mess but now looks pretty nice. Matt had wrestling practice that afternoon that absolutely kicked his butt – the first time back on the mat in a few days! Matt & I enjoyed watching Purdue-alum Drew Brees on Monday Night Football where he broke Dan Marino’s single season passing yard record and topping the 5K yard barrier…and he still has a game left this season! Matt was back at practice on Tuesday morning while Ann and Bu went to Columbus for hair cuts and shopping. They both looked very nice when they came home. I took the boys out with Mom & Gigi to first get Maryann a new cell phone and then out to lunch at Mancino’s for lunch afterward. Later, we pilfered through their kitchen again and brought home turkey, ham, noodles and dressing – yum! Purdue played Western Michigan in the Little Caesar’s Bowl (formerly the Motor City Bowl) in Detroit and looked great, winning by five – 37-32! Matt made the paper again, this time for his involvement on Christmas Eve with the Cheer Fund (along with a couple of his wrestling buddies). Ann had to go in to work on Wednesday and Matt again had wrestling practice. Paul came over for a “play date.” LOL! We ripped all the video from his camcorder (about 5 years’ worth!) and burned DVDs and back up discs in between shots of Patron! We had Little Caesar’s for lunch and Abby spent the night up in Indy with her BFF Megan. Matt was in the paper again, along with the entire wrestling team in a special winter sports varsity teams booklet.

Thursday was another early morning as Matt and the Pirates headed up to Indy for the annual tourney at Ben Davis High School. The Giant Super 16 Wrestling Tournament actually had 17 teams this year. Matt was under the weather during warm-ups, a likely response to skipping dinner last night and then gorging himself after weigh-ins. He said his stomach was upset but Ann & I wrote it off as nerves. However, during his first match he nearly vomited during the 1st period in his match verses Northwest IPS. He had no energy during the opening match and struggled the whole time. He had opportunities and really should’ve beaten the boy. However, while being taken to the mat in the 1st period, he vomited in his mouth and had to swallow it. (Gross – poor kid!) As it was, he got caught while trying a desperation move and ended up being pinned during the 3rd period. He had a forfeit in the 2nd round and then faced the host Ben Davis in his third match. It was a grueling match that went back and forth, but in the end Matt was able to prevail and won 12-11 to finish the opening round robin 2-1. However, with the opening loss, he was no longer eligible to have a shot at the first 4 position, which was pretty upsetting to him. Compounding the frustration, one of the boys vying for the top spot was a guy he had beaten earlier in the year. As it turned out, he was placed in the bracket of boys who were vying for fifth through eighth places. In his next match up, he faced Speedway. This guy was another big goon (all the kids he faced today were huge). He dominated the opponent and ended up pinning him! Next up, he faced a junior from Anderson for 5th place. Matt admitted before the match started that he was dead tired. Ann had given him an Advil and something for his stomach, so his body was feeling good, but he was just tired. He looked pretty good in his final match of the day – until the guy grabbed his nuts. Not only did he grab them, but he actually squeezed them, which hurt Matt pretty bad. What made the issue even worse was that it was not an isolated incident. The guy did it seven times! The coaches, parents and other wrestlers were all shouting at the referee about it and Matt said something a couple times – to no avail. The illegal move went not only unpunished, but un-addressed. The pain eventually caught up with Matthew and he succumbed as it totally zapped his energy. Matt was such a good sport, he tried to trooper on – I would’ve stopped wrestling or elbowed the kid or said something to my coach. I told Matt how proud I was of him taking the high road, but that it cost him the match because of it. He was visibly upset about not only the loss but also the manner in which he lost. It took him several minutes to regain his composure and head over to the podium at the awards area. He grudgingly accepted the 6th place award…only to find insult to injury when he was given a 9th place ribbon because they had run out of the 6th place ribbons. Supposedly they are to mail one to the team next week. The boy he beat earlier in the year? He finished 3rd which only hammered home the fact that he had let one get by him today. Again, I encouraged him to simply view this day as a learning experience for next year – when he and I both expect him to be in the championship match. Overall, it was a neat day. However, it was a little unorganized and seating was an issue as well. We found ourselves having to move around a lot and ended up standing for several hours just so we could watch matches, which were scattered over 8 mats throughout their field house but the seating went no higher than about 8 feet. The intercom was impossible to hear – the announcer sounded like something in a bus or train station (or as Ann put it, like what the adults sound like in the Peanuts cartoons). Ann made sandwiches for the boys as well as brining fruit and power bars. Matt’s good friend, Joel, also finished 6th. A junior finished 4th and a senior finished 5th, as did a sophomore. So although Matt was disappointed in his performance, 6th out of 17 wasn’t too shabby and was about as good as any of his teammates. Overall, the Pirates finished in 11th place again for the 2nd year in a row.

Ann had to work again on Friday. Matt had a hard wrestling practice. We grabbed Little Caesar’s pizzas after practice and then everybody had a nap. Ann went scrapbooking with her friend Shawna. Matt and I watched bowl games all day on Saturday, which was New Years Eve. We spent it quietly at home with Mom & Sandy coming over for dinner and cards. Ann & I won this year’s euchre series. Ann had a great spread of food again this year – Polish Mistakes, BBQ meatballs, Shallo’s dip and a veggie tray, toquitos, fried cheese sticks, fried green beans, chips & salsa and of course her famous spinach and artichoke dip that Gigi took home. The gals left pretty early – before 9 pm, I believe. Matt had three of his wrestling buddies over to stay the night and Abby had Kenzi over to usher in 2012. Ann took quite a shine to Kenzi’s Kindle Fire and dropped a hint that she might like it for her birthday. The girls were up late. I finally made them turn off their lights at 3 when I went to bed. Ann said the boys were still up around 5 am when they woke her up. I slept in to about 11 am on New Years Day; the boys slept in another hour before getting up, for breakfast after noon. Ann made muffins for breakfast. The girls and Luke played on the Wii while the boys were on the Xbox. It was a nicer day today – sunny, but very chilly with a wind advisory. Abby had Kenzi and Luke help her with her Science Fair project, which is on basketball. Matt and the boys went over to Joel’s house before lunch, but Kenzi stayed for lunch. Ann made Rebel Dogs and slaw for good luck – as we have done for several years in a row now. Kenzi left before dinner. The Colts, Saints and Cowboys all played on TV during the final week of the NFL. The Colts lost again to wrap up the worst record and will have the 1st pick in this year’s draft! The Saints won big and ex-Boiler Drew Brees set all kinds of records with another huge game! The Cowboys played on Sunday Night Football against the NY Giants. The winner made the playoffs and the loser went home. We have one more day of vacation tomorrow and then Ann & I have to head back to work. The kids follow suit on Wednesday. It was a very fast week that was very relaxing. We forgot to sign Luke up for basketball and although Ann tried to pull some strings for him, it looks like he will not be able to play. It may be for the best, however; Matt has a couple tourneys before sectional play begins which would directly interfere with all of Luke’s games. Anyhow, Happy New Year everybody!!

Next, let’s flip on the Waybac machine. Leading off this week’s outstanding crop of pictures are a couple of Grandmaw Brown from her graduating class in 1943; that is followed by another print of an old favorite from the ‘50s of Grandmaw & Grandpaw Brown in their living room on Elmwood St, shortly before a K of C function; then a couple crops of Mom’s first communion picture in approximately 1955; then a few more of Mom & Dad’s wedding in April of ’68 with classic photos of Grandmaw Brown, Uncle Hank, Mom & Dad Scheu.

And in this section, we have Aunt Sharon on her wedding day in approximately 1970 (Mom / Shar, you’ll have to verify that for me); Grandmaw & Grandpaw Brown at our house on Shortridge St in Lafayette for their 25th wedding anniversary party on August 31 of 1971 (I see Tammy in one of the pictures as well); Then Grandpaw & I on my birthday at our house in October of 1973; several crops of Grandmaw, Aunt Lou & I in June of ’76 in our living room on Shortridge; then a couple months later for Grandpaw, Mom & I in October of ’76 with me opening birthday presents; several photos of Mom & Dad B’s honeymoon in ’78 and finally several photos of Rob with Mom, Dad & I in November of ’79 in our house in Temple City, CA.

Man…if I were Matt I would have grabbed his!! Someone needs to tell this kid or better yet show this kid that is not a good move. Is it even legal? Anyway, way to go Matt!! I think over all you did a good job on a down day. I could see the struggle on your face when you weren’t feeling good at all. I’m not exactly sure on Sharons wedding date. Help Sharon!! Loved the pictures and loved the Waybac and boy does that last picture of you look like someone else??? He is definitely your son!! Take care and boy has it been cold down here, Today (Tues) it is only in the low 50’s. I know that sounds good to you guys but the wind is gusting about 25 to 30 mph. We are cold!! Love you guys and have a great week!!

Also, I loved seeing your Uncle Hank escorting mom down the aisle at the wedding. Wow was that a blast from the past!!!! Also in my First Communion picture, my best friend in grade school and part of high school is on the right bottom row, Phoebe Krabbe. She has past away now with breast cancer about 10 yrs ago by now. She was a riot and full of you know what. She smoked cigars occasionally and drove a big dump truck and hauled gravel in her later years. Her grandpa was mayor of Lafayette years ago and her dad owned Krabbe coal and oil where Grandpa and Grandma bought each at the times they had different furnaces. Loved it again Tom thanks…

  • No; that area is off-limits. You can do a “butt-drag” but the nuts are a no-no. It should’ve been addressed. He’ll see him again next year… Ann said the same thing about a couple of the pictures this week! It was great to see Uncle Hank; those pictures are so crisp and clear – I love seeing them come to life. Loved the little blurb about Phoebe as well. Glad you are enjoying it as much as I am creating it…Love you and so sorry to hear about Aunt Dorothy. I do hope she can come home soon. I think today was her birthday??
    Love, Tom
