No, No, Nothing’s Gonna Stop (Her)…

Abby was on an absolute tear this week in softball – nearly unstoppable! She played outstanding defense at first base, went 8-9 with a home run and made her pitching debut! It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since I held Mom in my arms and said good-bye for the last time. …My how time flies. I remember getting on that plane and how hard it was to leave and come back home. We have a few pictures of her again in our Waybac section below, but not enough. I’ll have to work on that next week. Dad, Rob & Sharon made it home safely from their trip to Jamaica. We all enjoyed the lovely late-Spring weather this week. It was very mild for this time of year and we loved it. And sadly we found out that we won’t be taking Abby to the ShowStopper Nationals dance competition in Ohio this month due to one of Abby’s teammates not being able to attend because of a “prior commitment”…too bad for Bu and the girls – they are really good!
On Monday, Matt had football practice then summer school, where he is taking Government. Luke began football camp and scored a 4th place in the 40 yard dash – not too bad for a lineman, huh? Matt had two more football practices that night as well. Abby had her doctor appointment cancelled. Luke had a baseball game vs. the Reds. He again batted leadoff and went 0-1 with a walk and strikeout. He had 3 stolen bases and scored 1 run. He played an outstanding 1st base, catching 3 putouts and made an amazing play on the ball in the 2nd inning. They had the bases loaded with 1 out. They had scored 4 straight runs already and it looked like there was no end in sight. The batter hit a short blooper that Luke went back and towards the foul line. He zoomed over, made the catch, and immediately veered towards the base and easily doubled off the runner. He then quickly threw the ball home for yet another out! Of course, we didn’t need a 4th out, but he essentially made a triple play!! It looked amazing and kids and parents on both sides made several comments to him. It sparked the team to come from behind and win 5-4! Next up was Abby’s softball game vs. Lincoln Realty. She batted 3rd in the order and went 3-3 with a double, homerun and single! She had 3 RBIs and scored 2 runs. She played 1st base and caught 4 putouts, including a nice play that saved a run after a bad throw when out in to the outfield. She tracked it down and sprinted the ball back to the infield, stopping the runner. Despite being up 8-4 with 15 seconds left, the umps decided to allow another inning. Somehow, the girls held on to win, nipping them 8-7. And sadly the Pacers lost to the Heat in game 7 of the East Finals to end their season and send Miami to the NBA Finals.

Luke had football camp on Tuesday. Matt had football practice and then summer school (he heard that Gov’t is easier in the summer). He followed that up with 2 more football practices that evening. Abby had another softball game, this time vs. Ford Abstract (for whom her good friend Brittney plays). She hit the ball hard again tonight (in fact, she hit the ball hard all week!). She went 3-3 with a pair of singles and a double. She had 2 RBIs and scored a run. Although they lost 22-4, the y showed heart as they were down 18-0 after the 1st inning. Abby pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, getting a strikeout in her 1st at-bat! She would go on to retire the side, in order!! In her final inning, she got the 1st out (4 in a row!) and could’ve had more, if it not for errors by a couple of her teammates. She did get the 2nd out of the inning but time soon expired before she could finish the inning. She ended up with 1 strikeout, no walks, gave up one hit and allowed 2 unearned runs. We are so proud of her!! :0) I helped keep the book for the game and Luke helped out by being batboy for the night as well.

On Wednesday, Luke had football camp. This time he scored 3rd in the passing competition! Matt had summer school. It was an early evening for Ann & I as Luke had pictures in the late afternoon before we faced off against the Devil Rays again. We started off well but couldn’t hold the lead. We ended coming back late as we always do but fell short, 7-9. Luke played 1st base again with 3 assisted putouts and a nice, unassisted put out that was nearly another double play! His defense has gotten a lot better this year. He could always catch, but he is learning the position more this year. He is putting himself in good positions to make plays and moves well with the ball. He batted leadoff again and went 0-1 again with another strikeout and another walk. He had 2 stolen bases and scored a run. Meanwhile, on diamond 4, Abby and her team were facing the Walter’s Tires team (our neighbor’s company). Abby continued her hot streak from the plate – boy her hitting has really taken off since we went to the batting cages! She was 2-3 with a double, single and lined another one to the 1st baseman. She scored 3 runs and had an RBI. She played 1st base again and recorded 5 assisted putouts with no errors on their way to winning again, 10-5. Ann went back and forth between games and got some good pictures.

Matt was back to football practice, early Thursday morning and then was off to summer school in the pouring rain. It stormed hard all the way to work for Ann & I, with torrential downfalls at times. It took forever to get to work that morning. Matt again had back-to-back practices that evening. Of course, none of these are official practices yet, but just strength, conditioning and agility training. Luke had football camp and then after work, Ann took him and Bu to get haircuts. They followed suit with me, going for a shorter look. Later I took him out to the ball diamonds for an impromptu baseball practice. It was very unofficial but we still had fun. He practiced pitching and did OK. Ann tried to grill out pork chops but we ran out of gas.  She still improvised and fixed a great dinner. The NBA finals started that night and Matt was sad as the Heat went down. Lots of new Facebook and miscellaneous pix from this week, including a couple more awards that Abby just gave me; pictures of Ann’s trip to Florida with the girls from work; Kate & Jake’s pictures from Florida a few weeks back with us; Emily’s daughter (what a beauty!); my cousin David Scheu; our good friends Wayne & Shannon; my good buddy Jerry; my old friend from high school Mark Kosier was honored to hand out diplomas to this years’ departing seniors at LPHS (how cool is that?); Parker & Emmett; Seth & his GF; Matt & Makayla; my friend Dennis’ first day on the new job in AZ didn’t go so well as a crane fell on one of his buildings; our friend Hannah’s graduation invite and of course several of our lovely little Bu…

I paid $4.25 for a gallon of gas on Friday morning. They say the spike is due to maintenance on a few of the refineries. Umm, could we not take them all down simultaneously so as to not create a shortage? Matt had summer school and Luke returned to the high school for his final day of football camp. Luke had another early baseball game that evening, this time vs. the Royals. They put a royal beat-down on us, whipping us 12-0. Our team looked like they had been at football camp and then hung out at the city pool all day. They had zero energy. We were missing our best player, but we were still flat…and no matter what we tried to get them fired up, it didn’t help. Luke lead off and was again 0-1 with a strikeout and a walk. He again stole 2nd and 3rd bases, but this time was left on base. I believe their two pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter against us. Their starting pitcher was a girl! Unfortunately, our really nice video camera took a dump today. It had been giving me trouble the last couple weeks, but now it won’t turn off unless I pop-out the battery and then it won’t close the lens. When you start it, it gives no picture on the LCD and won’t take video/pictures. So that evening I did research until the wee hours of the morning and settled on a replacement model that should be here before Lukey’s next game. We’ll have to use the old back-up for now. We had Papa John’s pizzas for dinner that night and watched a movie while Matt was off to graduation parties…

We slept in on Saturday – it was nice! Luke eventually woke me up and we made a trip to Auto Zone before changing out the alternator on the pickup. It runs great now! I should’ve done this two weeks ago…then it was off to Mom & Gigi’s house to mow. They were gone to New York to visit Keith, Rosie & Megan but Gma was sure to leave Luke a little goodie bag! He was thrilled!! We finished up there and did our front lawn real quick before getting cleaned up. Luke did a great job of mowing today. Next it was off to Brownsburg for another Scheu family wedding – this time it was Daniel & Kels! We paid $4.45/gallon for gas – yikes! It was a warm afternoon and it was a pretty, outdoor ceremony. We were sweaty by the time the reception started inside. The preacher was very cool and did a good job of breaking the ice with little comments here and there, such as, “love, cherish and honor…and root for the Boilers…” Most of the Scheu clan made it there, including: Chuck & Cindy and Kathy & Tom; Vicky (of course) and Faddy, Seth & his girl and of course the guests of honor (sadly, Aunt Sue missed her plane- as did Zack, Jasmine and her new baby), but Jackie and Billy & Blancha were there. Also in attendance were Dad & Barb; John & June, Barney & Steph, Kimmy, Chuck, Braden & Gavin; the newly engaged couple Lindsay & Jack; Sally & Scottie, and Chris, Tricia, Jack & Joey. It was great to see everyone. Between the company, the good food and the open bar, a good time was had by all. The two older kids were a little bored, but that soon changed when they discovered someone had left the keys in two golf carts, just outside the side door. It so much fun to see everyone and catch up with all of that side of the family. We can’t wait to do this all again in November, on Thanksgiving weekend! We left as the older generation left (Chuck & Cindy and Dad & Barb)…does that mean we’re old too???

We again slept in on Sunday morning. It would’ve been Mom & Dad B’s 35th wedding anniversary. I tried to call Dad late, but had to leave a message. He still has Mom’s message on there from a couple years ago. I hope he never deletes it. It was good to hear her voice again. I had to go in to my own saved messages on my cell and listen to the two that I have saved from her. It had been a while since I heard a voice. It made me tear up, but I felt whole again as well. Luke “helped” me mow the back yard. I think he took more breaks than anything. LOL! We did our weekly chores around the house, plus fixed the flush valve on the back commode. Luke played with Molly outside. We have been giving her more freedom to come with us on errands and out front when we work. She minds very well…unlike Lola. We watched NASCAR and movies while napping on the couch. Abby went to the movies with Emma and Ann made great cheeseburgers. Although I had replaced the gas tank, the grill is still acting up. Not sure what’s up with that…

Next up is our video section, which includes two new family videos and several others from around the internet.

We finally remembered to write down a quote for the Shit that Luke Says! When asked by his extended Scheu family members on more than one occasion on what he was doing this summer, he consistently replied to them all on Saturday night with a straight face, “I sit on the floor, crying help!”

Next up we have our Waybac section. First up, we have a great picture of the Brown family from May of ’59 (with Ralph, Norma, Great Grandma Brown, Grandpaw Brown, Grandmaw Brown, Aunt Marilou, her boyfriend and Uncle Timmie…so Aunt Dorothy must be taking the picture); Aunt Midge in May of ’59; Aunt Marilou w/ boyfriend in June of ’59 (not sure whose house had the wood paneling but there are many pictures of Bob/Connie in that house); Mom with Grandpaw’s gun (playing out a crime scene?), circa ‘59/’60; Grandpaw Brown with Aunt Marilou & Aunt Dorothy in April of 1960; Grandpaw and then Mom in June of ’60; Grandpaw in a photo for the newspaper in the ‘60s; Grandpaw with Birch Bayh in the paper in June of ’67; Rob & I at Grandmaw & Grandpaw’s house at Christmastime in 1980; Rob in our backyard on Rockwood St in front of the old garage in July of ’81; Rob & I with the Browns in their front yard, across from Market Square in August of 1981; Rob at Grandmaw & Grandpaw’s house on Thanksgiving of 1981; Great Grandpa Morgan’s sister (maybe?) – also at Thanksgiving of ’81; then a great picture of our young family just before we left Lafayette on the Sunday after Thanksgiving in ’81; then Rob, Dad and I with Santa up in LaPorte on Christmas Eve of 1981; Mom & Dad on New Years Eve of 1980 (the pictures says 1981, but that is in correct); Rob with Santa in December of 1982 at the Moose in LP and then Santa came again on Christmas Eve a few days later; then we fast forward to the 4th of July in 2003 – one of my favorites of my favorite holiday (with Matt, Abby & Grace); then Matt, Luke, Abby and Mom at Christmas Eve of 2003 in Rossville; the kids on our front porch on Christmas Eve in 2006 and then Christmas Day; Mom & Dad headed out on a boat again; and Abby playing goal keeper in September, 2007.

Well that closes out another edition of the Scheu Family Blog. As always; thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you next time. Until then, have a good one. Happy Anniversary, Mom…we miss ya dearly, sweetie…
Later, Scheu
