Somebody said Fair Warning…Lord, Strike that Poor Boy Down!

It was a picture perfect summer week, here in south-central Indiana. Poor Lola continues to hobble around the house and Matt had a couple of doctor appointments. Abby has complained about her knees and back and Ann had a couple doctor appointments. We’re just falling apart around here… Matt returned to football after a week off. Luke continued with his all-star baseball team and Abby jumped in to fast-pitch softball with both feet as she had four games this week. We spent several, sweaty nights out a the ol’ ball park this week! But the talk of the town was that the 4H county fair was back in town…
On Monday, Matt returned to football practices three times through the day. He also had a special session of football – a photo session! Being an alum of the Youth Football Program and now a senior, varsity starter and good role model, he and a few of his friends were asked to pose for the new YFP banner that will be on display at the fairgrounds booth and at all competitions. What a cool honor! Abby had her first fast-pitch softball game that evening vs. the Agnew Auction Svc team (our buddy, Kopple’s big South Decatur farm girls team). We held our own with them and finished in a tie, 12-12. I believe it is the first draw any of the kids have been involved in (except maybe soccer?). It was called after the 4th inning due to time limit. She has some good players on the team, but the coach’s strategy isn’t a winning solution – in fact, I doubt they will win a single game with the mind set that he will change player positions each inning. In this way, no one will get too much experience at any one position to make improvements. Our defense will struggle all year if he holds true to form. This game, Bu played 2nd base, right-center, left-center and 1st base, respectively. She was 0-0 from the plate with a pair of walks. She scored a run and slid in to home on a ground ball back to pitcher and was safe! The funny thing was that she was the only gal in shorts and the only player that slid the whole game!

Meanwhile, Luke had a doubleheader with his all-star team vs. the Connersville all-star squad – a good little team. We sat down the left field line with our good friend, the Messers and had a good time out there. Luke was on-base four times, going 1-3 overall. He had a single, a strikeout and a ground out. He had two walks and was hit by a pitch. He had 1 RBI, stole 4 bases and scored 3 runs. He played 1st base nearly the entire time, except a couple innings at 3rd base! He had several nice defensive plays and let one ball get past him. He had one really good play at third and 2 really good ones at first. However, the junior Pirates lost both games again, 5-8 and 6-11 to drop to 0-3 on the year. Luke nailed one of their guys during warm-ups at third – right in the head – and we gave him a hard time about it a few times. He almost hit two others – it was comical and he was a good sport. His best buddy Drew pitched well again but became sick late in the 2nd game due to dehydration and not eating appropriately earlier in the day and had to sit out the final few innings. We grabbed Wendy’s drive through afterwards and headed home. It was a late one that evening, finally getting home after 10.

Tuesday was another hot, humid day. Matt continued to go to football practice three times that day. Abby had another softball game – this time vs. the pink Lang team. Bu was 1-2 with a double and a K. She had 1 RBI and played left-center, catcher and 3rd base. We got blown out 1-13. Luke went out to Drew’s house earlier in the evening, so grabbed a couple brews, some snacks and headed out to pickup Luke and have a little dock time with Bryan and Rick. It was a gorgeous night out on the pond! Luke & Drew rode bikes, drove the golf cart, hit golf balls and went fishing. We relaxed for a couple hours and took time to slow down for just a little while – it was nice…we need more time like we had that evening…

Luke had all-star baseball practice on Wednesday night. Abby had a fast-pitch softball double header. In the early evening game, she went 0-1 with a walk and was robbed of a single. I was pretty upset with that base umpire as he was out of position the entire night and made several bad calls that cost us dearly in the end. She had 3 stolen bases and scored a run. She played 3rd base and catcher. In the twilight game, she had two more walks in her only at-bats. She stole 3 more bases and scored another run. She played catcher the entire game that night – what happened to moving them around each inning? We don’t like her back there as she has bum knees as it is and complains of back pain frequently – now she is going to squat for 3 hours? Oh boy… It was a very long night out there that evening, as we had 27 walks between the two games. We were out there for about 4 hours and they were boring games. Some can be very exciting, but neither of these was much fun. They lost again, this time 7-14 to drop to 0-4 on the year.

The fair returned to town on Thursday evening. The kids bugged us all night to go, but we said no. We were all exhausted from sitting out in the heat until late in the night all week. Matt had football all day again. That evening, Ann had porch time with her good buddy Shawna. Matt got his grade in the mail from summer school: he got an A in government class! Way to go, Scheu! We have lots of new Facebook and Instagram pictures this week, including Abby, Katie’s kids, Wendy’s daughter, Barney’s grandson, Phyllis & Dick, and oldie of Lindsay, more Abby, my old buddy Danny from high school, John & June’s new camper, Pat, Jino, Wayne & Wes at Blue’s Canoes, Chuck, Cindy, Cathy & Tom and Abby’s black eye from Lola biting her after she picked her up.

On Friday, Ann went scrapbooking with Shawna while I took Luke & Abby to the fair. We went to the derby for the first time in a couple years. It was a different format this year. They had two classes of autocross and demo derby as well as mini monster trucks and even a riding lawn mower smash-up derby! Afterwards, Abby met up with her friends and Luke & I met her new boyfriend that has caused so much ruckus this past month. We enjoyed pork burgers, corn dogs and some delicious donuts – things we’ve been waiting a year for! Luke and Bu rode a few rides and Luke played a couple midway games before we headed home.

We finally slept in on Saturday morning. Keith, Rosie & Megan came to town. We met up with them when Luke & I went to mow at Gma & Gigi’s house. We stuck around for a few hours to celebrate Grace’s 13th birthday. Luke & I came back afterwards and mowed at home in the intense heat. The humidity which had gone away the past couple days returned in full force. That didn’t stop us from practicing baseball out in the back lot though. Luke practiced pitching and hitting for about an hour before we called it a night and came inside for dinner showers. Later, Keith, Mom and family went to the fair and then came over to our house for a little while to visit. Keith & Megan stuck around afterwards and Luke & Keith shot bb guns and fireworks in the back yard. Matt went out to the fair with his buddies and stayed out later than I could wait up.
We slept in again on Sunday morning. We were late getting to our household chores as we were couch potatoes, watching all three of this weekend’s NASCAR races in the sweet air conditioning. We went over and set up the gazebo and chairs in the back of the truck and over on the WTRE front lawn again. It was again a huge hit as the kids made out like gang busters with the candy! Keith, Rosie & Megan sat with us this year. Luke rode on the WTRE float with Memaw & Gigi. The theme of the float was, “WTRE – The Heart of Greensburg.” Luke was the King of Hearts, complete with a throne, scepter and of course a crown! He was too cute!! Ann made a yummy cheesy-burger-macaroni thing that everyone loved. Ann and the kids went back over to Mom’s house to see Keith before he left. I stayed behind to finish chores and take a cat nap.

Next up is our video section, which features 4 new family movies and several from around the internet this week:

Next up is our Shit that Luke Says entry. Ann was reading her Kindle Fire in the recliner and wasn’t paying attention or started to nod off and it fell forward, hitting her in the top lip, actually creating a small split. When Luke saw this, I was still outside, unloading the van and he came out and said, “Well Mom hurt her lip – looks like you won’t be kissing her tonight, buddy!” 
