…Learns to Live as if each Step was the End

We enjoyed a slower week again, here at the Scheu abode. That being said, things are starting to pick up again. Luke got back to full time sports as track season wound back up. Abby studied hard for her big test and dance competition this weekend. Matt came home this weekend to work. All three kids began their Spring Break. Matt only gets one week but Luke & Abs get two. Ann made a little progress with her allergy test but continues to struggle with her knees. I continued to rehab and push my ankle each day and then regret it each night… And Mother Nature was doing great till she changed her mind about midweek. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
It was a rainy start to the week on Monday. Thankfully it went by very quickly. I walked three miles in the rain after work. I took Ann to the hospital to have labs drawn – the poor thing got stuck like 10 times over the course of an hour and barely got enough blood out for her allergy test. We hope it’s enough. We should know in about a week if it was or not. Luke went to track practice after school. Abby had SAT-prep class then went to Dixon for technique class. I don’t think it ever stopped raining the entire day and it continued all night as well. I snuck the window open when I came to bed and it helped me sleep like a baby. I love to listen to the rain when I sleep…
It was still raining as we made our way to work on Tuesday. Abby had to be in early for Student Council / lip dub practice. After school she worked at Wings & Rings until late. She said it was a little awkward but not bad. Luke had track practice after school then picked up new spikes with Ann when we got home. It finally stopped raining in the late afternoon, allowing me to walk two and a half miles and not have to throw my clothes in the dryer when I got home like last night. Bryan & I missed our first coaches meeting for football due to a communication error but it got us real excited to start talking about it again. Ann made cheesy popcorn for dinner and we had an early night. Here are random pictures from this week.

Poor Abs was in early again to school. This time it was more lip dub practice. Luke again had track practice and informed us he was going to try out for the same events he participated in last year and was kicking around the idea of even trying hurdles as well. I walked a 5K after work on a very pretty afternoon / early evening. Ann had an After Prom meeting at the high school. Abby & Ann had jazz class at the dance studio that night and Luke went to the YMCA with his buddies. Abby & Mary came back from the studio and worked on dance stuff in her room until late while I iced my ankle and plopped on the couch.
On Thursday, it was more of the same – Luke had track practice where he hurt his heel. I think it’s just the new spikes needing to be broken in a little. Abby had her final SAT-prep class then went tanning in preparation for this weekend. Annie made Cajun chicken & rice for dinner – yum! After dinner, the girls headed to Dixon for tap class. It was a beautiful day – sunny & 70! I’d take that every day. I was actually sweaty when Ann and I rode home from work. I got in another three miles that night before coming home and icing my ankle all night again. We had a storm blow in late that night which brought with it much colder temps and all the talk was that of the possibility of getting a bunch of snow this weekend!
I enjoyed the day off on Friday due to a dip in our census at work. I wore through my shoes this week so I took advantage of my free time to buy a new pair of walking shoes at Hibbett’s and then promptly broke them in by walking on the 5K trail. I didn’t get but about a hundred yards and that old ankle started screaming. Seems the new shoes are correcting some things down there? Needless to say, I iced it for several hours afterwards while watching Purdue play Michigan again. It was their opening game in the Big 10 tourney and they were the #1 seed. They played a little flat and the officiating was questionable at best and they lost in OT. They couldn’t hit a free throw and they had trouble getting rebounds. Funny how that game changed after Michigan’s coach got a T. Maybe Painter should be taking notes? But the boys aren’t done for the year, thankfully. They will be a #4 seed in the Big Dance and will play this coming Thursday. Bu was in early for National Honor Society. It was the last day of school for the kids before Spring Break begins next week. Luke had track practice at the high school and Abby had technique class at DDS. Matt came home and we went out to ElRep for dinner and a drink (or two). Abby and Mary went out with friends and then came back here to watch movies in the family room. We came home to watch movies as well (Hacksaw Ridge & When the Bough Breaks) out in the living room on the big screen. We have some new social media pictures to share this week.

Everyone was up early on Saturday morning. Ann made enough pancakes to feed the neighborhood for breakfast. Abby was up to take the SAT at the high school. Matt worked the early shift at the retirement home. Luke & I went to the Armory and got him signed up for baseball. Bryan & I will try to coach once again this spring. We didn’t get any snow but the temperatures were down in the teens overnight and I’m not sure it ever got out of the 20s all day today. We had to postpone our outside chores like cleaning out gutters, picking up sticks and cleaning the grill. It was just too darn cold outside. I did manage to PM the cars but I didn’t stay out for long. I decided to give my ankle the day off so we came inside and did our weekly household chores and stayed warm. Ann & Bu went out shopping. I ran to Walmart then stopped by Mom & Sandy’s to visit for about an hour. Luke played in the woods most of the afternoon and found his wallet. Matt came home from work and after a quick shower and nap, we watched a bunch of movies until late that night and Ann made popcorn and cheese for dinner. Abby & Mary went out again – this time they caught a movie and had dinner at BWR.
Matt was up early for work again on Sunday morning. The rest of us enjoyed sleeping in finally. We lost an hour of sleep overnight due to the time change of “springing ahead.” Luke went to Drew’s house for the day to play airsoft out in their woods while Ann & I took Abs up to Beech Grove for the annual ShowStopper dance competition. This is the first of three competitions for her this year. Today she performed her jazz routine of “Show Me How You Burlesque” with Mary, Regan & Kirsten. Matt ended up driving up to watch Abby after he finished work and sat with me – just like old times – up in our usual corner of the auditorium. They did not have a photographer there which allowed me to take my own photos. We will feature them next week along with the video that they recorded for us. It won’t be ready until about Thursday. I promised that I wouldn’t take any video so I kept my camcorder in the bag. But that didn’t mean I wouldn’t stop Matt from taking video on his phone. That video is below…thanks, buddy. The girls looked great and won first place in their category and first place overall with a platinum-award performance! Kristie, Mary and her little sister joined us for dinner afterward at our traditional stop at O’Charley’s. After a quick trip to the neighboring Target (as is tradition as well), I drove back and picked up Luke while Matt brought the girls home. Abby had Trevin over to play Mario Kart and hang out while the rest of us watched the Walking Dead / Talking Dead and unwound. I uploaded dance pictures to Facebook, so you can check them out there now or I will have them here, on the blog, next week… And on a final note, I am very proud to announce that today; Columbus Behavioral Center earned the 2016 Quality Award for the RTC-side of the UHS corporation. Our management team has worked very hard to implement initiatives over the past few years to improve outcomes and our direct-care staff has carried-out those initiatives on a daily basis. I know how hard we all work out there so this is a nice acknowledgement that someone else is paying attention to the great things we are doing for the kids in our region.
Next up is our Waybac section which still has our 2nd six photo albums of our young family in the Main St home at the turn of the century. We lead off this week with Matt’s 3rd bday party on Main St in March 1999; then coloring Easter eggs on Main St in April 1999; then Matt out at the high school where the Fieldhouse now stands with his YMCA soccer team in September 1999; next we go to Mom & Sandy’s house for Christmas Eve in December 1999; then bath time on Main St and visiting Mom & Dad in Rossville – both in April 2000; next we head to Treasure Island for the annual Week 19 meet & greet party at the Sand Pebble in May 2000; then out to the Decatur Co fair in July 2000; back to the Main St home for a visit from Gma & Gigi in September 2000; next out to Brown County for a Christmas party with the Drews in December 2000; then back to Main St for Christmas with the Stoewers; next is Matt’s 5th bday on Main St in March 2001 and finally the cover of one of our Disney pictures in May 2004.

  • Thanks Rob! I appreciate the kind words. I know the kids, Ann & I would love you to see you guys some time. It is snowing here and has been all freaking day! I don’t think we’ll have any accumulation but it is pretty. I could do without the cold weather though…it was a bit chilly walking today after work! Well time to eat; have a good one buddy.
